Does anyone have a slightest clue what happened to the Wrestlemania 40 series and why it got cancelled? The pre-order was up on some sites so it means the figures had to be already in advanced production phase. I didn't get an answer from Steve in the Q&A thread and channels like My Damn Toys or Kyle Peterson only have speculation or conspiracy theories. I collect WrestleMania basics for over 10 years and my collection is based almost solely on these figures. In the last years they had some great inclusions like Andre/Macho in ring carts, Hogan with molded t-shirt and bandana, Fiend in leather coat or some earlier great battle packs like Austin vs. Bret. Now it's frustrating because we got left with nothing before WrestleMania's anniversary. It's even worse because they already gave us a taste of this set and it was going be best one in years with better articulation. I was getting my hopes up for WM 1 Muhhamad Ali as a legacy addition to my collection and also first ever WM 39 Reigns with red boots or first ever WM 38 Rollins with awesome attire that everyone is asking for. I would like to hear your thoughts. Were you also looking forward to this set? Or maybe some of you have more insight knowledge on this topic? I still hope it's some technical or legal issue and these figures just got delayed.

Maybe a guess;
From a business perspective...... it's possible to say that the Ali SDCC set underperformed....
Everywhere I go - Reigns is warming shelves.
Batista is a classic peg warmer....
And Seth? I'm not sure which version this was going to be.... but there are a lot of Seth Rollins figures out there currently....
Maybe they just felt this lineup wouldn't do well & decided to scrap it/skip it & avoid clogging the system with 4 figures that might not sell well?

They lost the rights to Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins.

From a business standpoint it also included potential WM main eventers of 2024 HOF, Night 1 and Night 2. Seemed like a well thought out set. WM basics are always better figures than average top picks. WM branding on shelves is also important for WWE during WM season.

Maybe it's just as simple as they have way too many Basics already produced and needed to halt a set - and this just happened to be the next set lined up for production. And delaying it would - - - make it no longer be a "Wrestlemania" set.... Maybe it's not as deep as we're making it.

It's strange - the set included the 2 current champions and two people that had mainstream success in other entertainment fields (which screams WM). To answer your question, we don't know why/it was never answered by TPTB. Our knowledge would only be speculation and conspiracy theories just like My Damn Toys or Kyle Peterson. Steve or someone from Mattel would need to answer this. I rarely buy basics so I wasn't looking forward to this set, but I might pick up more once the sets with better articulation start hitting retail. I'm not even looking forward to the elite set: Cena/Rock - boring Trish - rereleased awkward/plain looking Trish Stratus that could have went to one of the GH sets. She had several WM looks that they could have explored. McAfee - really the only figure I'm excited for, but they definitely went with the wrong parts. BAF - a figure that we all thought would never be released, but it's also a reminder that Vince pretty much killed the whole tag team division in one night (IMO it still hasn't fully recovered from it).

I have to add that the floating theories I was referring to have something to do with Ali. It's either their cocnern on selling out the Mattel Creations Ultimate Edition Ali first or something connected to the new TKO deal and rights. I know my concern regarding a basic line might seem strange to many people here. But everone builds their own collections based on specific lines. If a cancellation decision blasts your only yearly line of interest it ruins the whole collecting experience. 😉

Steve said they made more and it has sold more than any other SDCC exclusive... so I'm not sure it underperformed(?). Either way though, I think they would want to cash-in on Ali figures while they can, so the cancellation is strange...

It was canceled because not enough retailers took/wanted the product this year. So therefore it had to be cancelled. Steve said let it be known what figures from that set you really wanted, and they’d do their best to ‘rescue’ those figures in the future.

For most people it would obviously be Ali but for me also the new Reigns since we didn't get him as The Tribal Chief in any WM line and WM40 seemed like a perfect occassion for that.

Thanks. So everything is clear now. Retailers weren't interested in a WrestleMania basic themed set this time. Too bad there was no way to make it an online exclusive item. I hope this isn't the end for the line and it will return stronger next year.

The WM Basic line this year was a billion times stronger than the elite line. If they had swapped the figures, People might have actually been interested in the Elite set. As it is, I fear that Elite WM40 set is gonna be the worst pegwarming series as a whole since Elite 77. Not even the BAF can redeem that set in most people's eyes. But if they had made those Basics as the Elites.... *pours one out for what could have been*

And this a large WM anniversary we're talking about with one weak set and one cancelled.

That's my fear but them cancelling the WM Elites and keeping the rest of the PPV/PLE sets would be the worst look on WWE/Mattel ever. The worst case scenario would be the WM40 set does SO poorly they stop making PPV sets entirely within the next few years. Would hate to see it, and I don't think it would happen, but they are starting to do some deep cuts on those BAFs. I seem to remember the Wrestlemania set with Foley and Booker warming really hard too. People were charity buying the Matt figures just to get them off the shelves. So who knows. I can see the basics going away for good but more likely the Wrestlemania set would become an online exclusive. I find it really hard to believe that WWE would just permanently shelve the Elite wave for ONLY its flagship show.

With Basics it was going downhill for years. In the past there were four major PPV lines and later WM and SS had Battle Packs. For the last 3-4 years WM Basic Series was the only one remaining line and now it might be over. The Elite lines seem secure.

I hope this isn't the end for the line and it will return stronger next year. Yeah seems like it hasn’t gotten support from the major retailers the past few years. Just RSC, Amazon, and Big Lots. I guess when Big Lots dropped out they didn’t have enough orders from the other two to move forward.

So the Summerslam PPV series got lumped into the Mainline Elite series for E68 and E77, maybe we see this happen with the WM Elite line for a bit too?
I'd like that a lot in all honesty. We miss out on too many WM attires in Elite form. Sami Zayn main evented WM this year, and he's coming out as a basic figure. Or that WM38 Seth could instead be an Elite sometime next year now. Who knows, just throwing an idea out
