I never thought I’d see this day but now that we have so many Ultimate Editon series with Fan Takeovers, Legends, Ruthless Agression, Monday Night Wars, I find myself loosing interest a bit. When it was one series, it was easier to collect and be a completist but It’s become a bit saturated.
I think that’s why I love Coliseum so much because we have to wait a while in between waves. It’s frustrating because we always want more quicker but I actually think it builds anticipation and excitement and will probably keep interest for collectors for many years as and when more LJN talent gets signed
I’m sure I’m in the minority here, as a lot of the figures coming out are great (except for a few anomalies like Eddies torso and Cody’s puke gold pants).
Thoughts?

Look at that Eddie torso it's atrocious, look at that Kurt Angle torso... I want a new mold for kurt. Kurt will look gigantic compared to the Rock ultimate.

eddiep -- great post, and it's a very valid point. Mattel has a problem -- these became so successful, Mattel felt they had to ramp up the production like crazy. But as you said, now there are so many, they're not as special - so I wonder how that will affect sales.

Also - i feel they are hurting the elites and legends sales - people want the top lines, and its almost like they need to go all in with the ultimates or focus on elites.

How exactly are they hurting the Elites & Legends? I still can't find Elites anywhere. And Target Legends shelves are almost as bare as Walmart's these days... I think the Ultimates are a mix of hit-and-miss.... Gobbeldy-Gooker-Undertaker set? Easily FIVE-STARS... Coliseum Collection stuff? FIVE-STARS.... Eddie Guerrero? looks ridiculous. Muhammed Ali? No way that needed the Ultimate treatment..... Ultimate Andre? eh.... I also think the accessories can make-or-break the Ultimates, and those have also been hit/miss..... I cherry-pick from all the lines anyway so it doesn't really make a big difference to me.

I’ve never bought any of them but I’m noticing that the figures are becoming more what you’d expect from the Elite series rather than a premium one. At those prices, I would expect attires with plenty of detail rather than just some extra hands. Instead we get Randy Orton in an almost plain black attire, or Lesnar in his shorts that only have a couple of logos.

I have read/seen quite a few people say they are only buying Ultimates now. I'm mainly buying UE too... the only Elites I buy these days are ones that haven't had an UE figure (eg. Million $ Man, Mr Perfect) or are completely different eras from their UE figure (eg. Legends Edge).

I completely disagree. I only collect Ultimates of Legends. I feel as though Ultimates of current talent really hurts this line. Ultimates should be reserved for all time looks kind of like what defining moments is.

So i imagine the people who were buying elites a year ago who arent buying them now....might be hurting the elite line. I think the ultimates should have stayed to special moments. But just like defining moments (before it flopped) mattel are now including people and attires in the line that dont merit being there. Defining moments nakamura...before he debuted rings a bell. He hadnt even had a moment at that point. Ultimates are better, but they make the elites seem lesser. So ill never buy a hogan elite, bret elite, warrior elite, hbk elite, kane elite, undertaker elite, andre elite and so on, while there is a more ultimates alternative. Which makes me not buy the elites. Its hard to explain, but its fairly obvious its hurting the elite line.

You have to remember, we are such a small sample size of Mattel's total sales, and I doubt many of us are talking to/interacting with the rest of their customer base regularly. Sure, we the collector's may prefer the UE line; it's the top-of-the-line product that is made for collectors. But kids/parents are still mainly focused on buying the other lines (mostly) due to price point, and I know so many people on here that have said they still mostly do Elites.

Honestly I tend to mix/match the figures and their accessories, and at the end of the day - Elite vs. Ultimate doesn't make THAT big of a difference to me.... as long as they have nice detail, cool head sculpts, and unique accessories, I will add them to my collection. The articulation isn't that important to me.... I'll still buy a good Elite - if I can find it!

I think, just like with everything, since the line was doing well...Mattel and retailers decided to triple their orders because money. So now the market will be oversaturated and the buzz is gone. It's just another line of figures now instead of "ultimate"
The costs are now being spread to THREE figures per wave, so I expect less and less detail/accessories too.
*edit unless they just decided to allocate more budget to Ultimates. which is a possibility....only time will tell, but that Series 18 Orton begs to differ.

I collect them same way I do elites, guys that fit my era.
My gripes are too many of them recently have been too close to elites I own and when they don’t nail it, like Eddie or even diesel. Ultimates should be the best figure of that guy.

Yep, success can be a double edged sword. The line seems to be well received by fans and retailers. Which bumps up orders and slots. Which leads to diminishing returns on quality and character choice. If they're going to 3 per wave with less budget per figure, more current wrestlers (who seem more prone to hitting clearance), and more figures in general (less attention to detail on each fig), there are bound to be diminishing returns. Hopefully they haven't totally over-extended themselves. We'll see.
