In no particular order: 1. Great Muta (classic facepaint) 2. Bruiser Brody 3. Jushin Liger 4. The Great Kabuki 5. Andre The Giant The newest figure in the 16d Collection line is Terry Funk. Terry is currently up for pre-order.   GoodSmile Shop no longer carries the 16d figures. Any old links to the site are considered outdated links. For the most up-to-date info on the 16d line, use the site: 16d.jp/p_category/16dc/I'd love to get my hands on this figure, but the 16d.jp website doesn't seem to ship outside of Japan. I guess we'll have to wait for sites like Big Bad Toystore or eBay to stock them. Not a fan of Buyee? |

Overseas, there's quite a lot of steep price hiking, too. Yahoo Auctions, Mercari, etc. Mandarake offers the cheapest selection; but you have to be actively searching daily to snap up any good deals immediately.  Recently, I received the Bye Bye Great Muta Retirement figures. They were the last figures shipped worldwide before GoodSmile dropped the 16d line. |

Long overdue, but here's the recently-released 16d Great Muta retirement memorial figures.  Ever since HAO started creating figures for the 16d line, I always wanted a modern Muta to be added. Muta's red mask pays tribute to his late 80's - early 90's red facepaint design; while the Bye Bye motif is a nod to the paint Muta wore for Choshu's original retirement card back in 1998.
While both figures contain the exact same body sculpt, extra attention to detail was added to the green mist drool around
Muta's beard. The red version contains a longer runoff compared to the black version.
 Scale-wise, I was kinda bummed that the Bye Bye Muta's are a tad smaller than both the previously-released classic facepaint and Keiji Mutoh versions. The head sculpt is noticeably smaller.  Both versions have their own unique packaging, too. These were the last figures that I ordered from GoodSmile before they dropped the 16d line. As pre-orders, GoodSmile also wouldn't ship them in the same packaging; forcing me to pay shipping twice (along with twice the duty fees) on two figures that shipped out the same day. I certainly didn't have a Good Smile with that experience. |

That's how GoodSmile's operated over the last 7 years with pre-orders. Also, for anyone interested, here's what GoodSmile had to say in a recent email response on the subject:

Road Warriors would be awesome! Since we got Terry Funk, I’m just hoping they’ll do Dory soon. Lots of great choices out there though. Vader, Harley Race, The Destroyer, Terry Gordy just to name a few.

16d hasn't delved into famous tag teams yet. We have Misawa, but no Kobashi. Kid, but no Davey Boy. The last major figure of Dory Funk Jr. was released by Charapro in the mid 2000's. It's a weird figure, as it was made entirely of polystone. I don't know if Charapro was testing the waters to see if collectors would prefer this style ...or it was just intended as an odd one-off. Years ago, a fan presented the Dory Funk Jr. Charapro statue to Dory for signing. Despite being a licensed
figure, Dory was noticeably amazed, and asked where the fan had purchased the figure.
I've heard another story once of a fan presenting Scott Norton with his Charapro Mini Big Head. Still
polybagged, Norton signed the figure and said he never seen it before. Hmm. Mil Mascaras was also known to
be apprehensive of signing his Charapro legends figures; one collector on facebook said it took multiple events
to convince the legend to do the 'yob'.
Strangely, the Bruiser Brody Charapro figures contain the licensing of Rockstar/Barbara Goodish (Bruiser's widow),
yet, the recent Junkshop Dog Bruiser figures claim to be the first officially-licensed Bruiser figure in which Barbara receives royalties for.
Maybe they didn't know about their figures because the contract was in Japanese? Makes me wonder....

If the WWE still had exclusive rights to Demolition's likenesses, I could see a sliver of a chance that Ax and Smash could make it into the line. Such was the case with The Rock; who's presence in Japan isn't as regaled when compared to the likes of
Dynamite Kid or Terry Funk; yet is considered one of the WWE's top moneymakers when marketing is considered.
This is how we got figures of The Undertaker and The Ultimate Warrior as part of Medicom's Sofubi Fighting Series line; two legends who's matches in Japan aren't as regarded as their careers in the West, yet are some of the WWE's biggest draws
from a licensing standpoint.
Out of respect to Bill Eadie (Demolition Ax), Bill has a longer history in Japan as the Masked Superstar; not to mention, Bill's
connection with the Strong Machines; a gimmick in Japan that has a much better chance of being converted into a 16d figure
one day.
Outside of the WWE's influence, it's all about how much the foreign talent had left an impact on the Japanese public; the target audience of the 16d line. Legends like the Road Warriors would be a safe bet. Mil Mascaras seems like another no-brainer. Vader is another inclusion I'm humbly waiting for (yet, seems to be under the WWE marketing umbrella as of late).
16d have also been known to capitalize on retirements. The recent passing of Terry certainly inspired his figure's posthumous
release.
Then again, this is all just speculation from a longtime collector's perspective.

It's time to go into ultra-obscure territory once again. Get ready for a photo overload. West Gate Pro-Wrestling Kewpie Mascot figures
West Gate Pro-Wrestling is a comedy Wrestling promotion in Japan. The promotion is best known for it's roster of comedic knockoffs based on Japanese greats such as Giant Baba, Antonio Inoki, and Riki Choshu. The following figures are known as 'Kewpie' (often shortened to 'QP' in Japanese listings). From what I could gather,
the kewpie's manufactured in Japan were not licensed by the original creators of Kewpie dolls; more-so, the following
figures were released by a company called S&S under the 'Costume Kewpie' banner.
 The first figure strap is of Koriki Choshu; a famous comedian in Japan best known for his parody of Wrestling legend Riki Choshu.  The next figure is of Antonio Koinoki; a parody of Antonio Inoki.  A Kewpie of Love Sexy Rose. I wonder if Sexy Rose ever had a match with Razor Ramon HG?  The fourth Kewpie strap is that of West Gate referee Pork Hayashi. QP COLLECTION - THE QP TRIO three pack In 2002-2003, the QP Corporation released a special three pack of Kewpie figures.  All of the figures are based on pop-culture characters such as a Pro-Wrestler, a 70's Punk rocker and Elvis Presley. The higher quality of these figures look closer to the Kewpie's manufactured in the west. I even dig the uncharacteristic display stands, which look like the cap of a Coca-Cola bottle. Design-wise, I think the Wrestler Kewpie is based on Super Strong Machine; with a bit of Rey Mysterio Jr. thrown in for fun.  Custom NJPW Kewpie's. How many can you name? Besides West Gate, Japanese promotion BJW also has officially-released Kewpie figures:   One of the Brahman Brothers. This is a Kewpie of the Wrestler Kei Sato The back of the packaging looks nearly identical to the West Gate Kewpie's.
 The second Brahman brother: Shu Sato. While the duo are billed as twins; both Kewpie figures are identical...right down to the same blood stains on the figures' t-shirts. The only difference being the name of each brother on their respective packaging.  Isami Kodaka  Masashi Takeda & Yuko Miyamoto.  MEN'S Teioh.   Finding photos of BJW's red card Kewpie figure set is super-hard. Nevertheless, this is a Kewpie based on former BJW Wrestler and Sumo Daikokubo Benkei. Just saying Dai's name aloud makes me feel exotic. Imagine repeating that in public numerous times.
I'll try to hunt down the rest of the figures after. Even searching online isn't the most helpful for these rare items.

While browsing Japanese auction sites, I discovered an 80's toy that I never seen before. This figure set was released in Japan as part of EPOCH's Mini Game Series. This particular toy is known as the Women's Professional Wrestling game; as it features two of arguably AJW's biggest stars of the era: Dump Matsumoto and Bull Nakano.  The text on the left of the package read 'Gokuaku'; which was the stable name of the Gokuaku Domei; a heel faction led by Dump Matsumoto.  |

The same Joshi Wrestling game by EPOCH was also released with a different card. The packaging and font is a direct ripoff of Mario. Yet the Gokuaku Domei and Women's Professional Wrestling references are still on the packaging. This could have been an earlier card before Nintendo issued a cease and desist, prompting EPOCH to change the packaging ...but I'm just thinking aloud here.  Maybe it's the yellowed blistering, or exposure to sunlight over the last 36 years, but the colours of the Mario version look faded. The placement for Dump and Bull in the blister also is different. |

Wrestling figures based on the Gokuaku Domei weren't the only Wrestling toys EPOCH released. The cleverly-titled 'Mini Wrestling Game' is a handheld tug of war toy that was released in Japan.  Judging by the Americanized illustrations on the packaging, it seems EPOCH were planning to release this product in the West. As for the generic Wrestler illustrations on the card, I'd like to think the Wrestler in the blue trunks to the left is based on Terry Funk. Could that be Stan Hansen in the
background taking a body slam? Perhaps the duo at the top are the Von Erich brothers?
All of which competed in Japan during the 1980's.
We may never know...

Not every Wrestling fan is as well-versed with Puroresu, or the Wrestlers that donned the Tiger Mask gimmick as we are. That's the biggest reason I run my blog and post here; to shine a light on the strange and exciting world of Japanese
