As somebody who hasn't been following this line very closely, I'm curious about the lightning fast sellouts of these figures. Preorders barely last an hour before going on the pre-order-1 and so forth.
This is almost unheard with Mattel Elites, unless it's Target or Walmart exclusive of course. Is this line just experiencing a crazy surge in popularity, or are they produced in much smaller numbers than Mattel Elites?

Yes. AEW is a smaller brand and this is a start-up. They’re just launching the product

A lot remains to be seen. Initially, no, not even close to what WWE does. But with Target distribution starting to appear and listings popping up on Amazon, it may not be too far apart at least in the US. Mattel has a much better and bigger distribution network internationally. But Mattel is doing more sheer volume just based off of all the sublines and basic lines they produce.
AEW is definitely punching above their weight class. The brand has a pretty hardcore fan base, and I think the line has drawn in a lot of non collectors. I've seen multiple threads about the each wave popping up places like Reddit, where only figures like Mr. T or Slim Jim Macho seemed to get any widespread attention from the Mattel line. There's also more anecdotal things, like a lot of new users posting on this board, or a people who seem like new or non-collectors posting on Reddit or social media about where to buy the figures, or saying that they bought a couple for their office or desk.
Mattel and WWE will continue to have the bigger footprint and brand recognition. But this line has definitely surpassed what I considered best case scenarios.

AEW as a company got me interested in wrestling again. Was a diehard fan from ‘88 until around 2016/17 when the WWE just became too much for my tastes. The toy line has made me buy figures when I haven’t bought any kind of figure line since 2003/04. So I think a lot of people might be in the same boat as I am and looking to buy any and everything that comes out for the toy line which is making an already smaller produced line even harder to get hands on.

Currently, Jazwares is a much smaller company than Mattel and produce in smaller numbers. AEW figures also seem to be a lot more detailed than their other lines, so that may reduce production numbers further. However, I’m to see what the future holds. Jazwares has been on a steady build in recent years, while Mattel seems to be on shaky ground. I think Mattel will hang in there, but in some years we may see the two companies on level ground.

I don't think it's a guarantee that Mattel and WWE will stick together. On one hand I'd be shocked if anything changed. But I can't imagine WWE is thrilled to see a direct competitor offering a better execution of the articulation that Mattel is offering in their premium line at a $20 price point.

Just worth noting that we’ll never truly know because no company reveals production numbers (except exclusives) due to ‘commercial sensitivity’
It’s unlikely but for all we know they make the same numbers but AEW just sells so much better because the fan base is more ‘hardcore’ wrestling fans than casual viewers

This, 100% We just don't know -- and RSC orders are going to skew to AEW because they're more limited production runs and the base is so hardcore

They produced less. Jeremy said that was his strategy launching the line he was intentionally under producing it to generate a buzz. And seeing it was a Walmart exclusive it was a 100% less of a production run.
As for Target yeah they added tags but I have yet to see an AEW figure on their pegs. And as for Amazon they canceled my preorder I had with Amazon. And all I see now there are 3rd party sellers. So I would say they are still produced in less numbers than Elites.

They've been popping up here in Minnesota. Mostly just Riho's on the pegs though, at least from my experience. I did find the Young Bucks though. The other three, I haven't seen.

Both Mattel and WWE are publicly traded companies which means they are obligated to try and make as much money as possible for their investors. AEW and Jazwares are both privately owned, which I would imagine means they can take less of a profit if they choose to offer a superior figure. Just something to chew on...

Yeah, it's definitely an interesting issue. The other factor is that the WWE license is undoubtedly much more expensive (probably both in terms of the up front licensing cost and the percentage of revenue split) than what Jazwares is paying for AEW. So Jeremy can likely hit the same profit margin (on his end) as Mattel at either a smaller volume and/or allocating more money into the product. Like you said, nothing we'll ever be fully privy to. But I do think it will be really interesting to see how this evolves.

I doubt execution of articulation is a big factor in WWE's mind. I can maybe see a few designers in Mattel being a little frustrated with budget constraints, but no top executive would grumble over double-jointed arms.

like a lot of new users posting on this board, or a people who seem like new or non-collectors posting on Reddit or social media about where to buy the figures, or saying that they bought a couple for their office or desk. I've watched wrestling most of my life but I've just now started collecting figures. I'm just gonna pick up what I like and display them, I'm not going nuts about the "collection" aspect.

Same here except I remember watching OVW (or whatever it was at that point) when I was a kid but I didn't get into wrestling again until Smackdown came out for the playstation. The shittiness of that era of wrestling meant I only watched for like 5-6 years before falling off again. Hearing about AEW and what they planned to do gave me a chance to get back in at the ground floor and not have to catch up on a bunch of WWE stuff from the past 15 years. I also liked that they seemed to be more wrestler oriented as opposed to the classic promoter focused business. Didn't matter, I just started watching WWE again and now I'm watching whatever I can.
