I thought this might be an interesting discussion as it’s something I’m currently dealing with and I feel like a lot of people deal with it too.
I have a doctor’s appointment coming up. I have to go every few months for follow up appointment and my doctor wants me to go for blood work 2-3 weeks before each appointment. He refuses to give me a prescription for the blood work at the time of my visit and insists I call for the prescription closer to the next visit. Here’s where the issue comes in. He has two offices and two phone numbers. When I call his main office number, usually no one picks up and the voicemail is full. If I call his secondary office enough times I eventually get a receptionist. I then have to go through the same process of explaining that I need a prescription for blood work, and it’s almost like the request is blowing their mind. I worked in customer service for about 10 years and know how stressful answering phones can be, so I always make a point of being nice on my end, even when the receptionist is being unnecessarily hostile.
The weird thing is that when I go to the office, his receptionists are really nice. On the phone it’s a totally different story. I just recently spoke to one yesterday and she was so hostile that I came close to apologizing for requesting my prescription. I actually had another question that I didn’t even get to ask because she hung up after saying she’d take care of my prescription.
It was the most bizarre receptionist experience yet. After explaining what I needed, she asked how I wanted it sent. I told her they usually mail it to me. She responded with “You don’t got a printer? I can email it.” I said email would be even better. She then asked me if I knew what I needed on the prescription or if she needed to ask the doctor. I told her that I don’t write the prescriptions, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same every time. At that point she groaned loudly and asked for my information to bring up my file. She said she’d email me the prescription, but 24 hours later I still don’t have it and I’m honestly kind of uncomfortable calling back.
Being that this has been a reoccurring issue for a while now, I’m actually considering changing doctors. It’s a shame, because I think my doctor is actually a good one, but he’s so hard to get in touch with.
Has anyone else had experiences where the receptionists/front desk completely turned you off from a business?
