Been watching some WWF in 1997 and thought how there were so many wrestlers who could have been featured in Acclaim's WWF War Zone but never made it, despite the game coming out in August 1998 and being so outdated by that point that Bret and Bulldog had been gone for 10 months at that point. Yet they had Owen's danger attire, Goldust's T.A.F.K.A attires.... I get it would take them longer to make character models than attires, but it baffles me that they included say the Headbangers, who were barely featured in WWF programming at the time, but not other more prominent stars. For example: - The New Age Outlaws (came together late in 1997, but they had time to make them and were heavily featured on the shows since September 1997) - Vader (featured less after Survivor Series 1997, but Ahmed Johnson was in the game and hadn't been properly on Raw since summer 1997) - LOD (literally would have been more appealing than the Headbangers) - Marc Mero (not as popular but he would have padded out the roster nicely and was still featured every week after he came back from injury in October 1997) - Brian Christopher (similar to Marc Mero - had been on programming every single week for much of 1997) Acclaim stepped up their game with WWF Attitude which featured over 35 wrestlers, as opposed to War Zone's 16. But by comparison, it was a small game. Any others you could add in your opinion? Were any other wrestlers rumoured at one point?

The problem was the game was in development at the same time In Your House was. It was the first time Acclaim made a 3D wrestling game and as a result they had to make everything from scratch. That is why the roster was so out of date by the time the game released. I agree that it sucked that so many guys who were regulars on TV were not in the game. I so wanted the Legion of Doom and the New Age Outlaws in this game

Headbangers were tag champs in 1997, that's how they got in.

If my memory is correct based on early screenshots/clips/beta the roster was based on late 96 early 97.
Edit - Before someone comes in and pushes their glasses up and says "Well actually Kane..." , Kane is the only one that wasn't on tv in early 97 but I imagine they knew how big of a deal he was so they got him in.

The reasons so many guys are missing from the game is because it's an early 3D wrestling game and they hadn't figured out how to optimize disc space yet. Remember we're talking about an era where 700 MB discs and cartridges were what the two main consoles used. FMVs and high quality audio takes up a lot of space on the disc. Look at how big of a difference was made when the FMVs were gone from Attitude, the roster like triples in size plus they had more time to work on compression and optimization. Yeah, the game started development towards the end of 1996 and Acclaim fought to keep the guys who were gone by the time of the release in the game because taking them out would have caused delays, like they basically say that verbatim in the strategy guide if memory serves correctly.

Outdated or not I’m glad that we got Bret Hart in the game. The headbangers were a strange addition. I guess they thought that they would be bigger by the time of the release.

the wrestler's sound effects were at least second to none in war zone.
and they had a breakable table!

Hell Bret was in WCW for like half a year and he still made it in.

Kane was a 100% pallet swap with The Undertaker, so he was extremely easy to put in to add an extra character.

Having Bret and Bulldog in made the game better at least. Would have been worse had it been someone like Sultan or that level.

The Headbangers were pretty popular in 97 and appeared weekly on TV so it's not as if they didn't deserve spots in the game. I remember Vader's mask was in the create a superstar category so maybe they decided to let players create him rather than replace him with another roster member.
I also remember that Kane's reverse attire was in the game and yet in real life he didn't debut it until a year later lol.

And during the game’s development, the Headbangers were expected to be the big tag team of the new era. There was a hot minute where WWE was convinced that they were going to be megastars.

Well, here's something cool that I just found on WWE 2k19's community creations, almost absolutely perfect recreations of LOD from 1997, and I'd rather have them than some mediocre attempts at the Headbangers. So, along with good Ahmed, Faarooq, and Shamrock CAWS or Foley and Triple H '98 from 2K18, that's what I'd play to get my 1997 fix, no crappy War Zone lol
