I was out yesterday and rolled my ankle on a sidewalk. It hurt and I probably looked like someone with a horse hoof for a foot, but I was able to limp around. When I got home an hour later and took my shoe off it BALLOONED and holy poop did it hurt. I had it elevated with ice on it for about an hour and a half. I was right about to start watching Raw and it suddenly started feeling like someone was tightening it in a vice and killing it. It was horrible. I'm talking about my ankle not Raw. I think?
I went to the hospital and waited forever in the waiting room with no sock and a cold foot. Hadn't trimmed the ol' toe nails in about 7 weeks. Some of the other patients looked a little afraid. Understandably. So after x-rays they told me I fractured my fecking ankle. Ah damn. They put me in a cast and told me to go to a fracture clinic. I was at the hospital from 8pm (mon) to 3am (tue) and my appointment at the fracture clinic was at 6:30am (tue). I stayed up and went to the clinic where they cut the cast off and fitted me with a boot and gave me crutches. He told me to wear it for any walking (while discouraging walking) and said I can take it off at home but might be better off sleeping with it on. Gave me a prescription for some pain pills (I have some greens that work much better) and told me to ice it. I'm going back in 4 weeks to see how things look.
Anyone here ever done this before? I wouldn't mind a timeline of sorts on how things might go from someone who's gone through it. When will the swelling subside? I have to stare at my toes like Beatrix Kiddo and "will" them to move, and when they do it's lightning in my foot. I can't put ANY pressure on it. It happened less than 20 hours ago and I know it's still fresh, but any experience/advice would be appreciated.

That sucks, man. I feel like with any significant ankle related injury it doesn’t take long for the swelling to start. I remember years ago my brother ed up his ankle badly on his skateboard and we were trying to hide it from my mom. It ballooned up to a tree trunk so we didn’t have much luck bamboozling her.

I’ve sprained my ankle many times, mostly when I was 13-18 yrs old. Never fractured however. Same as you described though until it just got better on its own after a week or two

I'll type more later but I had a fracture in the 5th metatarsal of my left foot. Not ankle but I had the boot and crutches and the whole deal. Was about a 12 week recovery start to finish for me. I'll edit this or make a second post with a bit more info after my workout. Was a bit of a funny story actually getting the x-rays

I've never rolled my ankle so sever that I broke or fractured it before.
I DID however.... hit my right big toe with the fridge door when opening it, thus lifting the nail up and having it come off my toe last September. It was very painful. But I can only imagine the pain you are in for what you are going through right now!

Ok, so.. First things first. I'm not a doctor or physiotherapist. I am a track coach, and strength training coach. Still an athlete too, but far more for my own sh**s and giggles than any competitive ventures anymore. So I'm relatively well versed in physiology, etc, but at the end of the day I haven't gone to med school or anything, so don't take anything I say as actual doctrine. (Pun intended ). So mine was a fracture in my 5th metatarsal. Basically the long bone that connects to your pinky toe. I was doing some 1 footed box jumps in the gym, missed one, and rolled my ankle when I landed, landed on the base of the platform thing, which was just a big ass piece of metal. Heard a huge crack sound, and it hurt like a mother... Realized I couldn't really do much more of my workout after trying to walk it off, and called it a day. Iced it when I got home (if this happened again today I wouldn't ice it, I'm a totally anti-ice guy now, but oh well). Tried walking on it the next day (Yeah, that was a stupid idea, but I was in the middle of an internship and didn't want to take the day to go to the doctors). After it continued to swell and bruise like all hell the next day, I went to the doc late in the evening. He figured it was a sprain too based on how it happened, but figured we'd take x-rays just in case. Went in next morning for x-rays, and we had a laugh as it turns out we were totally wmrong and I broke my bloody foot. I remember hearing him talking to another doc going "Yeah, it was late, seemed like a pretty routine sprain, thought these were just to be safe x-rays". Oops. So the actual recovery part for me, was 6 weeks in a boot and crutches, with no weight bearing. Obviously I had to bear weight to shower, but that was literally it. Outside of that no weight on my foot. Given that yours is an ankle and not a foot bone, that is likely the difference on why walking wasn't strictly forbidden for you like it was for me. (Because the bone I broke was so small, it was really finicky to heal, and walking on it could have caused it to heal improperly is basically how he explained it to me). After 6 weeks, I got the boot off, and was allowed to walk, but that was it. no running, jogging, jumping, or additional weight bearing of any kind. Just walking. 6 weeks after that I got to start introducing other activities. From there I'd wager it only took about 2-4 weeks before I was back to 100%. So 12 weeks to heal, and about 4 weeks to recover after healing. Basic things: If it hurts, don't do it. Pain free motion is fine, but if it hurts don't do it. Swelling is part of the body trying to heal and basically clotting the blood around the injured area. The swelling will subside long before the break fully heals. For me the swelling went away in about a week, but it was discolored a fair amount longer if I remember right. I'm guessing regardless of the difference in our fracture sites, the healing is likely gonna be pretty similar. I had a checkup x-ray after 4 weeks as well to make sure everything was on schedule.

I played footy for years, I have probably sprained my ankle some 20-30 times in my life. The swelling sucks, but it goes over fairly quick. Just keep your leg high.

3 weeks into a new job & I rolled my ankle bad. I ended up with severely strained tendons & ligaments. I was out of work for nearly 3 months. My foot/ankle turned blue, green & yellow. The work doctor said I needed surgery. But I didn't like his demeanor & his waiting room was filthy, so I didn't get it done. I was unable to walk on it for about a week. Then I tried the boot & crutches for a while. That was almost 15 years ago & I'm doing fine. But I think if I did physical therapy, I would have been back to work much sooner.

I broke my right foot over 10 years ago. I did it by kicking ice frozen to a rain gutter. I used to feel pain after it was all healed when it was cold out but I no longer feel the pain.

F*cken skateboards. The doc told me 4 NASTY (bone through the skin) ankle break skateboard stories. One guy was a teenager, the other three were kids under 10. He was actually really annoyed that kids are allowed to use skateboards. It sounded practiced, but he had a whole "speech" that he gave me that included stats and comparisons, and dangers etc. etc. I left thinking at least 1 of the for 4 broken ankle skateboard stories was his kid.

Haha. At least you were doing something productive. I had the Monday off. I decided to go to Tim Hortons for coffee. It's about a 20 minute walk. I met the sidewalk of death about 5 minutes into that walk. It hurt, but it was keep going and get my coffee or go home. So I kept going. My walk tuned into a limp and then a gimp, and then I was basically dragging my foot. I got my Tims though. Everyone in Canada knows how important that is. Iced it when I got home (if this happened again today I wouldn't ice it, I'm a totally anti-ice guy now, but oh well). Ice has it's place. It would have worked a lot better with a sprain, not so much with a break. It had no chance at stopping the swelling. It seemed to freeze RIGHT TO THE BONE though, and goddamn it was intensifying the pain. Tried walking on it the next day (Yeah, that was a stupid idea, but I was in the middle of an internship and didn't want to take the day to go to the doctors). After it continued to swell and bruise like all hell the next day, I went to the doc late in the evening. I remember hearing him talking to another doc going "Yeah, it was late, seemed like a pretty routine sprain, thought these were just to be safe x-rays". Oops. One of the first things I did was call my boss and tell him I won't be in the next day. Told him what what happened and that I was going to the hospital. He told me a few times, "there's no way you were walking on your foot if it was broken." Hahaha. Oops indeed. Yeah I'm not allowed to walk either. When he said I could take the boot off at home he just meant while I have it elevated. If it's not in the boot and I put pressure on it I feel things going all to hell. I tried initially to just hop around without the boot. Apparently that causes shaking and movement and is a MISTAKE. God. Haha. I appreciate the input but it feels like you just broke my other ankle. That is a LOT MORE time than I was expecting. I dislocated my shoulder playing hockey and got surgery for a torn labrum. I was told it would be about 3 months until I could go back to work. I was back in 2. When the doc here told me to come back in a month for x-rays I was thinking it was to confirm I was good to go. When my shoulder was in a sling my elbow wasn't doing anything. When I got to the point of physio and the sling was off I noticed how my whole arm had actually gotten weaker from lack of use. I'm not letting that happen with my leg. Several times a day I'll make sure my hip and knee are moving so their range of motion doesn't become stagnant. And when it's time to do physio I'm hoping my work now will give a leg up (ha!) on recovering. It's been a week now. Most of the swelling is gone and I can pin point (from pain) exactly where the break is. When I went to the hospital I would have sworn to you I broke every single bone in my foot. Everything hurt. Now it's quite clear where the break is. The most pain I've felt (other than the break) was my knee Wednesday morning. I was babying my foot and my knee was ALWAYS bent. After basically being in that position for 36 hours I tried to straighten it and it disagreed with a vengeance. "Baby time" was over and that's when I started making sure I was exercising my leg at points throughout the day. I'm guessing regardless of the difference in our fracture sites, the healing is likely gonna be pretty similar. I had a checkup x-ray after 4 weeks as well to make sure everything was on schedule. The most costly coffee I've ever drank.

Worst pain I ever felt was when I was playing Metroid Prime on GameCube. I had recently gotten out of the shower and was cleaning my ears with a q-tip. A boss fight came up and I had to use two hands and left the q-tip in my ear, hanging out. A short time later, the phone rang. Without thinking I picked it up and put it to my ear, shoving the q-tip in way too far. I screamed at whoever was on the phone. Had to use a bit of force to pull the bloody q-tip out. Messed up my right ear.

Well. That escalated quickly. Because of lack of movement with my foot in this boot I developed a blood clot. It started at my heel and runs up my calf to the underside of me knee. When the girl was doing the ultrasound that discovered this she had to squeeze my calf to get a better image. That squeezing caused some of the clot to break off.
There’s one in my lung right now. I couldn’t breath. Short panting and gasping was all I could do. I couldn’t inhale enough oxygen to keep my body going. So I hyperventilated and passed out. Girlfriend called an ambulance and got me to the hospital. They’ve given me blood thinner pills, have been injecting a blood thinner cocktail into me, and I am attached to an IV bag with a drip doing the same thing. They’re worried that something may get to my heart or brain. They’ve been giving me CT scans to find any other clots that may be traveling through me. I’ve been at the hospital since midnight last night and feel like absolute hell.
I hate to say it, but if I suddenly go “dark” on here you’ll all know what happened. I haven’t been on here long, but I’ve definitely met some cool cats that really made watching wrestling fun again. Hopefully I’ll be back.
