I recall seeing this in PWI when I was 7,8,9 years old and just thinking "What in the world!!!" What is ECW?!?!? Why is he bloody
Living in ILLINOIS I had no idea what ECW was, i started scrounging through the magazines, I'm seeing stuff about Raven, The Sandman, Sabu, The Eliminators, Mike Whipwreck
I HAVE GOT TO FIND A WAY to watch this
Then they started showing up on RAW, holy crap this is awesome!!! THIS IS ECW!!! Then guys started leaving right and left, their jobbing like crazy in WCW and WWF, I get upset
Finally a breakthrough! ECW ON TNN and massive disappointing, it was alright nothing like what it had been
Finally it closed its dours till it joined the invasion (yawn), then ONE NIGHT STAND 2005, I was supe rpumped, I loved it then the netx night on RAW, no talk of ECW
Then it came back in 2006 I'M pumped, 2 episodes in of ECW on SCI FI and I realize it's not gonna be the same
I'm honestly jealous of people who got to see ECW in it's prime, what a treat that had to be
I'm watching The Renegade and The New Rockers and you all are watching The Pitbulls

Stuff like that and New Jack along with it being filmed like an informercial while airing at around 1 or 2am on a work night for me turned me off of ECW. Stuff like that pic was just too much gore than it needed to be.

The gore and pictures like that were just the hook though. There were legitimately amazing matches going on regularly, great story telling and storylines. Something for everybody.

Maybe if you got to see a whole show. But I lived in Essex County NJ which was maybe 3 hours away from Philly and the only time I saw it air an one hour show at either 1 or 2 am and it was like an informercial. They didn’t air a whole match let alone a whole show. It was basically Joey Styles recapping stuff. |

I’d heard of it in magazines too, but Beyond the Mat was my first real look into it.
it was only a few years ago that I actually sat down and watched through all the hardcore TVs and big events. luckily I found them online with the original music and and commercials so it was like taking a time machine.

My first exposure was through magazines too....like @pj experience? it was only a recap show I was able to find on Eurosport.

The story behind that picture of Dreamer is that Tommy never bladed before, ever. And asked Raven to do it for him. Raven said, "yeah, sure!" And he takes the blade and goes right across Dreamer's forehead. Not a nick, or a pick, but put the blade on one side and swiped across. Stevie said to Raven, "is that too much??" and Raven goes, "Eh, he's fine." I remember hearing Raven talk about that in a shoot.
My first memory of ECW was in the wrestling magazine The Wrestler. There was a story on if Paul E. Dangerously was trying to make the group of him, Eddie Gilbert, Dark Patriot, Don Muraco and Jimmy Snuka the new Dangerous Alliance, or is it gonna be Hot Stuff International. That was in 1993.
My first time watching ECW was on a TV channel out of Detroit Michigan called WADL TV 38. Every night at 7 pm they would show wrestling. One night ECW came on, and it was in late January or early February of 1994. I remember they were hyping up the 3 way dance with Funk, Sabu and Douglas.
It wasn't until 2009 when thanks to certain websites that will not be named that I got all the 1993 ECW TV shows all the way to 2000 and got to see everything. I had seen about 75% of ECW TV already but it was nice to finally watch it all. It felt like a TV show with seasons knowing that it ended at the end of 2000. The 'series finale' sucked. Ha ha ha

For me ECW was just something I saw in the Apter mags until they got to TNN. Earlier this year I decided to watch it from the beginning. Thanks to ridiculous year we’ve had thus far I’m all the way into July 1997. For me it’s been a mixed bag. I don’t feel like things picked up until Douglas threw down the NWA belt. The storylines have been good, but I’m not in love with the wrestling itself for the top guys. I can unequivocally say I’m not a Sandman fan (great entrance though). What ECW really excelled at was exposing new things to NA fans whether it was the lucha matches, MPRO guys, or the technical stuff with Malenko and Benoit.

The gore and pictures like that were just the hook though. There were legitimately amazing matches going on regularly, great story telling and storylines. Something for everybody. Maybe if you got to see a whole show. They even said that their product was considered like an infomercial.
The one thing I loved was the music that they used for hyping a wrestler with a music video, or hyping upcoming shows. It's where I first got introduced to so many new songs and artists. The one thing that sucks about ECW on the WWE Network is all that stuff is gone, because of copy right reasons. And honestly, the music helped make ECW great back then.

I wanna say I remember reading or hearing that by them airing ECW like an infomercial it got them to air it for free. If not they would have to pay the TV network to air it or something along those lines.
I remember they did make it on like Philadelphia Sports Channel, Sunshine Network, MSG Network, so I figured that they would have to pay to get on those channels, but I guess not!

I never got into ECW because of pictures like that. I’ve never been a big fan of blood. I mean if it’s used sparingly and at the right times I’m ok with it. (WM13 Austin/Bret.) But excessive gore has never been my thing.

I remember watching ECW some times at 1am...mostly after I had watched a horror movie and was scared to go to bed lol. Me and my brother would refer to it as real wrestling.

That's what turned me on to ECW. A college friend of mine got a tape, and I was amazed that everyone on the card was working as hard as he (and occasionally, she) could. Even though I was still watching the WWF at the time, I had begun to tire of their slower pace. WCW had begun to emulate the WWF (especially once Hogan was signed), so it was nice to have a gritty alternative. |
