I barely move my neck to turn and look up at the two officers banging the cell in an attempt to get my attention.
"Some lass on the phone fer ye."
I'm surprised.
Who the hell would want anything to do with me after the s**tshow in Scotland?
Jenny came down to see me the other day and quite frankly, that's all I care about.
I hate the fact that she had to see her father in a jail cell but the kid's been through a lot lately.
At this point, this is blasé for her.
My bones ache and muscles tingle as I slouch up from the bench and follow the boys in blue to the nearest phone, drilled into the wall.
"Hello?"
I hear a faint sigh and I can already see her expression on the other line.
"What were you thinking? What the f**k were you thinking?!"
It's not often that Lila is ever upset but I understand exactly where she's coming from.
I embarrassed her and the company on national television.
It wouldn't be the first time.
"Look Lila, I'm sorry okay? I'm so sorry."
I can hear breathing on the other line, waiting for me to continue.
"My drinking got out of control and quite frankly, I didn't want to live anymore but...you know me."
My breathing is shaken and panicked and my heart is beating like a Neil Peart drum solo.
"That's no excuse, Billy! You violated parole?! You realize how bad you made the company look? It's hard enough having to convince people that you aren't paid off or corrupt but this?"
I can hear her getting emotional and I don't know what to say.
"I went to bat for you, Billy and I will continue to go to bat for you. It's going to be a hard sell but I know you're a good guy."
Despite all the s**t that's gone on these last few months, Lila is the only person that never lost faith in me.
She always hoped for the best.
I know how she can be with her prized possessions - she'll say anything to keep her cash cows happy but it's always been different with me.
She genuinely cares for my well-being.
Sorta.
She only got a hard on for me after I beat Zmey but she's always been respectful to me and Jenny.
To me, respect means more than anything.
"So what? Am I fired now?"
Lila chuckles.

"The Board of Directors have given me an ultimatum: if you're charged and arrest you will be terminated from the company...."
"What happens if somehow, by the grace of God I'm not?"
"Then you're going to participate in the Chamber Match. I think you're more than worthy of, at least getting a shot at the title."
She might care but with Lila, it's always business.

I don't know what compels me to ask her but like all my senses and emotions, I can't control it.

"Well, so far there's Thunder, Mason, the new guy MONDO and umm....Destroyer."
She knows exactly what buttons to push.
Why did she save him for last? Because she knew that it would get me hot.

Nothing terrifies me more than the s**t that’s in my head.
When I think of the real dark stuff, my skin starts to crawl, and the tips of my fingers get cold. I can feel every drop of sweat as it rains down my face.
There’s something that’s giving me this overwhelming sense of dread and panic and I can’t control it.
I’m powerless, once again.
I thought it was just the booze.
I truly thought I had it beat, that I had it under control.
But those thoughts replay in my mind like a bad film reel and now it’s on a constant loop.
Reminding of all the bad things I’ve done in my life.
I was a different person then so I shouldn’t feel like scum.
But I do.
And the drinking just brought those feelings back in full force.
Here’s the kicker though – I’ve stopped drinking.
Cold turkey since December, when she came back into my life.
She is what’s kept me off he booze for three months but goddamn, is it hard.
“Mr. Broom,” suddenly, I’m off autopilot and an honorary member of Pittsburgh’s Finest greets me at the door like an unwanted Christmas caroler.
Back to reality where I can feel the hard title floor beneath my brown business shoes.
Meaning I’m grounded.

I haven’t even finished putting my tie together and my vest is half buttoned when he speaks again in a deep voice, “It’s time.”

“All rise for Judge Price!”
The boy in blue shouts, forcing me to get up from my seat and await the arrival of the judge.
The jury.
And executioner.
I stand there, guilty as all sin in my cheap, wrinkled suit as the judge in all his honor takes a seat, overlooking the entire room.
“This is a matter of Sanchez and Freitag versus Broom.”
I tower above my lawyer, his suit better pressed than mine, clears his throat before reciting, “Your Honor, Joe Strubachincoscow on behalf of Mr. William Broom.”
Another sharp dressed man, much younger than my lawyer stands up at the table next to us.
“Your Honor, Joseph Bruce on behalf of Mr. Aaron Frietag and Marcus Sanchez.”
I turn my head slightly as to see the massive crowd behind me. A stern looking older man sits with his arms crossed in a navy-blue blazer and I can see in the corner of my eye him focused on me.
Like a sniper in the distance.
“Your Honor, Mr. Broom is present and we’re ready for the motions.”
“Very well. You may call the first witness.”
Bruce, in a khaki suit and brown shoes turns and faces the crowd, turning his body completely in the opposite direction until he’s touching the wooden barricades keeping the spectators away from the animals.
From within the crowd is some kid dressed in all black.
The floor squeaks beneath his combat boots as he stomps his way up to the witness stand.
Bruce approaches the kid, placing a bible out in front of him.
“Raise your right hand.”
The kid is sworn under oath to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
“Can you state your name for the record?”
“Daniel Conant.”
The kid from Michigan.
“Now, do you see Mr. Broom hear in this courtroom?”
“Yes,” the kid’s droopy eyes veer over and contact mine. His lips pucker before facing the lawyer again, “He is.”
He doesn’t even have to point. It’s fairy obvious who’s the one capable of doing serious damage here.
The kid takes a seat on the chair obscured behind the box by the judge.
“Now, Mr. Conant could you please tell the court what you were doing on the night of September 25th, 2019?”
My time in Hell replays in my mind like a bad gag reel. The perfect metaphor for how my life was back then.
Pure hell, and I was miserable. It was just the beginning of the end before I ended up here.
Being judged and possibly, sentenced for my actions.
I remember my encounter with the kid, and I wish now that it was a better one.
I was still full of angst and hatred after making Luke Marshall whine like a bitch and I was hot after the shouting match with Lila.
Those were my excuses then, but I have no excuses for my actions now.
I was either too drunk to care or moody because I wasn't drunk enough.
I remember every sensation. I remember every thought running through my mentally bruised brain.
I remember my arms feeling tight due to the constant clinching of my fist, ready to swing at the first person who looked at me sideways.
I remember letting go and allowing my anger and self-pity to take over and break the kid’s window.
I can still hear the crashing sound of glass as it shatters all over the back seat of the kid's Prius.

I can hear it ring in my ears and then...the ringing turns to pounding.

"Order in the Court!"
“He slammed the door to my car and smashed the window! The guy’s a prick!”
I just sit there like some call center rep, just taking the beratement on the other side, unable to react.
Another reminder that I'm the bad guy here.

Bruce is taken aback from my lawyer's sudden burst of energy. He tried to pull a fast one on the jury but my guy caught it.
And called him out on it.
Bruce continues to question the kid about our altercation, trying to fit the square peg in the round hole for anything.
But instead, he comes up with nothing.

“Calling next to the stand is Egor Ivanov."
The short hairy man from the apartments.
Thinking back on that night makes me shudder, seeing his face as he watched me nearly bleed to death.
Another man, much taller than the hairy man stands next to him by the stand.
“What do you remember from the night of November 10th?”
I can still feel the blood oozing from my wrists. I can feel my veins pulsating. I can feel the handle of the knife in my hand, I clinch my fists to remind myself that it's all in my head. I can feel the veins atop my head start to bulge, causing my skin to grow tighter and tighter.
The man speaks in such a thick Russian accent, completely different than I remember hearing him as he cried out in fear. The interpreter next to him just nods after every word.
“Mr. Ivanov says that he heard loud banging on the wall and screaming."
The hairy man speaks again, frantically recalling the events of that night where the evil American came at him with a knife.
"He kept screaming, 'Jenny! Jenny!'"
I thought that was all a dream but...apparently, it wasn't.
The knife fight felt so real, I felt the enemies breath on my face.
The sand was like fire.
"It sounded like he was fighting with someone."
"And what was Mr. Broom doing when Mr. Ivanov went to confront him?"
"When he went to go check on Mr. Broom, he found him covered in blood with his apartment destroyed with a knife in his hand.”
When it's said like that, it sounds worse than how I remember.
I must've passed out or something.
That whole night is a blur.
"Did the defendant approach Mr. Ivanov?"
I can see the hairy man shaking in his shoes as he takes one, quick glance at me before blurting out without the use of his interceptor, "Он пытался убить меня! Он пытался убить меня!"
That startles some of the audience, including members of the jury. The security guard approaches the man and orders him to calm down and take a seat. The interpreter pleads with the man as well.
The man continue to shout, all while pointing at me.
I can't help but duck my head in shame.
"Mr. Ivanov says that Mr. Broom tried to kill him!"
I immediately look up, my furrowed brow obscuring my vision.
The judge pounds the gavel in an attempt to remain in control but I can't find the words to defend myself.
I'm an empty shell.
A wandering spirit.
Lost and without direction.
My lawyer jumps in though, "I object, Your Honor!"
He even startles me.
"The knife that my client used was found in the sink when the police investigated the scene. That is a false accusation!"
He grabs a binder and opens it with such force that the cardboard makes a smacking sound on the table. He paces back-and-forth in front of me reciting to the judge and the jury the very detailed police report of my apartment on that night.
After my lawyer is done laying down the law, the hairy man pouts his lips and calms down.
He seems speechless as if his spiel to get me locked away for good failed. Even Bruce can't think of anything to say.
My lawyer adjusts his suit before setting the binder down and taking a seat, catching his breath as he does so.

A name I've never heard of before. A blonde haired woman stands up from behind the dividers and walks through the box by the judge.
Again, she's sworn to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
My mind struggles to place this woman and what say she would have in my downfall.
I think of every place I've ended up since Dallas and my mind just can't place her.
She takes the stand and looks at me as if I was some caged animal. Even though she's so far away, I can see her lean back as if I'm going to lunge at her and...

She then proceeds to describe what I did that night in great detail.
I apparently walked in and bumped into every, living being that was in the bar. I shoved and pushed my way to the bar in need of a refill.

And that’s when I grabbed him and dragged him over the bar, about to pound his face into hamburger.

I shoved one of those kids against the wall and grabbed the other in a headlock. That's when the manager threw the three of us out for causing a scene.
I can see the few clips I've seen from the video play in my head, serving as more evidence that only strengths the case against me.
A wild man ravaging two innocent bystanders. Because he felt like an animal backed into a corner.
Because he lost everything.
"He then threw Roddy down into some....abandoned construction zone after they fought down the street."

The cold, dark street that I walked down in a drunken haze is all I see in front of me.
I can see the foggy yellow lights outside The King's Pub as I watch the entire incident take place.
My stomach churns as I see myself maul those two kids.
I'm then taken back to Dallas where some Scottish psychopath did the same thing to a blue-haired girl.
The people I've hurt had it coming - Needles, Luke Marshall, Daisy, Zmey..
But those two kids, they didn't deserve it and the guilt continues to eat me alive.

There's nothing I can say that will justify my actions. I just stay seated, leaving the courtroom with an awkward silence.

Nobody reacts. They just sit there like zombies taking in the speech.
"Of course people were hurt and that's unfortunate but they're in stable condition and from the reports that I presented in court today, all signs shows that those two students are stronger than anyone."
"Your Honor, if Mr. Broom is found guilty for his actions, while heinous and certainly unforgivable then I suggest you charge every single person in this room as well. If Mr. Broom is charged, then it will be because he's human and only human."
My lawyer takes a deep breath before taking a seat next to me, leaving the entire courtroom stunned in silence.
"Very well. The Jury will now meet and they will decide if whether or not the defendant is to be found guilty for his crimes. Court is dismissed."
And down goes the gavel again.
1 HOUR AND 56 MINUTES LATER...
"The Court is now in session!"
The all familiar pounding resumes until one of the members of the Jury stands up, his eyes glued to a piece of paper.
“We find the defendant, William Saturn Broom –“
The voice of the Jury lingers, making the entire room feel uneasy, hanging on every syllable.
“Not guilty.”
I don’t believe my ears.

There’s a sheer pounding in my chest when it dawns on me that’s most, if not all of Jenny’s college fund.

I should feel relieved but then that thought makes me feel comfortable.

I guess at the end of the day, the family truly got the justice they wanted.

Jenny Broom has no future because of the actions of the relapsed alcoholic father.
As I walk a free man in the loosest sense of the word, I catch in the glimpse of my eye a sharp dressed woman with her arms crossed.
She has devilish eyes and I can make out a smile.

I don't get time to react or say anything before I shoved in the backroom of the courtroom, quickly fleeing the mob of reporters surrounding the place.
