Hooray, it has been like nine/ten years since we've had a true alternative on the shelves. I am going to be a critic here, because I want these things to move on the pegs. The biggest problem with the Jakks TNA line was that it failed to interest fans who didn't watch the product. I feel this was down to: - generic packaging
- complete lack of accessories

I think the biggest problem with the TNA line was the TNA brand. TNA was trying too hard to be WWE-lite. And while AEW hasn't been flawless, they do feel like a very different product, and seem to do well with younger demographics.
Matching the price point, style, and scale of WWE is a huge step. TNA was offering a product that looked totally different and inferior to WWE's offering. These figures should match up pretty well against WWE, and I think the premium articulation and matching Elite's price point should be a win with kids for playability and bang for your buck for parents.
I do agree that the packaging color scheme if bland, and feel the same about the AEW logo. But they have a pretty colorful roster with loud ring attire, so the more muted packaging could work. I see it as similar to the Marvel Legends line, where the black packaging makes some of the really colorful comic book looks really pop.
It sounds like they already have something in place with at least one major retailer, so that's a huge step. Getting your product into a Walmart or Target instantly puts you in front of millions of eyeballs. I think it's smart to start slow, establish a brand, and then try to integrate new tooling or playsets in the future. Too much too fast and they'll have the same problem as Mattel where retailers don't want to carry their product.

The AEW packaging gives me WWE Classic Superstars vibes, which I think will work in their favor.
As many have pointed out before me, TNA’s biggest problem was.. TNA. I don’t think there was much they could do figure wise to draw in non fans.

I really don't think AEW line will make the same mistakes as TNA line. On top of that honestly the whole lack of accessories thing really doesn't matter. After seeing the interview on MWFP Youtube, the guy who is in charge of the line sold me with the ring gear, and ring gear accessories. Me personally have been collecting figures pretty much forever and if you say a mistake by this line in not including a steel chair that we all have then that is your thing. I rather have the better ring gear like Adam Page who has great ring gear accessories rather than an Adam Page figure with say his shirt or chest and a chair. The company is hot, the figures are getting great reviews from Toy Fair. I do agree it is smart of them to have the Classic Superstars like packaging. Hell I pre-order Series 1 already and can't wait for them all to come out.

As many have already said the biggest issue with the TNA line was the TNA brand. But also, it was really soon after Jakks lost the WWE license and they were in a period where they just seemed defeated. Toward the end of their WWE run, they had clearly put less effort in and I remember it bringing about a lot of complaints from collectors. Then the TNA figures came out with the same molds. It was basically just the same figures of new characters, so I think the line had already started on a sour note.

Also, Jakks just kinda sucked lol. These figures are way nicer and from a better brand that has a lot of appeal atm

About catching the eye of non-fans - I'm surprised they didn't do a Luchasaurus in the first two waves. .

They need to increase the numbers of the chase figs. 500 and 1000 is a joke on an ongoing basis

AEW is already so much more popular than TNA ever was. Their buy rates for the first PPVs absolutely crushed anything TNA ever did at its peak, just not even close. This isn't comparing apples to apples. More like comparing a rudderless ship to a speedboat.

Jakks TNA also went with the Deluxe figures which didnt catch on instead of the RA/CS style fans wanted.

A couple of considerations: 1. The TNA line was a long time ago and things have most definitely moved forward 2. TNA was always 'bigger' in the uk and elsewhere than us and that affected the scaleability of the line in the states. Accessories etc would require more cost, tooling etc and when TNA had such a small slice of the pie in terms of PPV, tv ratings, merch etc in their home market then the toy line is ne we going to be huge and therefore corners need to be cut and decisions made for financial rather than design reasons

I agree that packaging could be an issue. As a collector, I love it. But to the average person shopping for toys, it’s uninviting. The carding could be the exact same shape as it is but it could use a ton more colorful images on it. The tna line at least had the benefit of household names like hogan, sting, angle and hardy. These guys are nowhere near as recognizable so they need to employ every tactic imaginable. Accessories could be a selling point so I agree with that as well.

I remember the terrible distribution on the tna figures. They were cool that they fit with the DA figures but the choices were strange. I can already say that having a chase belt the first set is stupid if you are going to do it that way at least make it diecast.

The Jakks Tna line was garbage. They had these huge heads. They were all the same height. They were all loose jointed. The company put out cap for WWE once it was known their deal was up. They then had this great opportunity to make a return to glory, but instead they just stayed lazy and put out a line that wasn't up to standards they helped create. I loved Jakks up until they started down grading everything.

I remember TRU was carrying them and then all of a sudden they stopped. Kmart sold them too, then stopped. It was weird.

Not to mention, at the time, TNA wasn't in the greatest position. That was during the dark era with Hogan and Bischoff in charge, and it was not as popular as it once was, and was on a struggling, niche network.
Toy Biz /Marvel Toys got in on the ground floor, and struck while the iron was hot. Theirs sold fairly well.
AEW/Jazwares already has a leg up on where the show is located on TNT, an owner behind it that actually knows what he's doing, and lots of hype, as well as actually putting on mostly quality product.

I remember only seeing wave 5 and 7 in store here at Kmart everything else I ordered from my buddy who owned a comic shop.
