Hi,
I have a 360 with a broken disc drive that I was looking to replace. I have looked into buying a standalone console, so I don't have to go to the trouble of replacing the disc reader in my old one. I had one that supported HDMI, was white matte, and had a 120GB Hard drive.
My question is this- If I buy a replacement 360, will my old hard drive just work once I attach it, or am I going to have difficulties? Will I retain my saved information on that hard drive or have a way (through XBL) to retain it?
Thanks in advance! I've googled and googled and can't find an answer.

Sounds like you have one of the older models, the ones where the hard drive is connected on the side of the console.
In that case, you can just buy another 360 and attach your old hard drive to it. Just in case though, transfer everything from your hard drive onto a USB.
I really hope this helps.

Google "Xbox 360 transfer cable."
I had to do this years ago when I got a new 360 after my first died. You pretty much link the hard drive directly to the new console (my new one was the black one with built in memory) with that cable and I think it was relatively easy to do. Of course this is only if you buy a new console that has the hard drive inside and not detachable. Otherwise, swap the hard drives like Mesh says.

I actually had a transfer cable and did that once before, a long long time ago, when upgrading from a 20GB to 120. I am actually looking to just buy a replacement white matte console. The problem is, there are different models, and most being sold on eBay come WITHOUT the power supply. When I had previously tried to replace my Xbox 360, the power plug from my previous console didn't fit the new one, and I busted the input on accident. Thankfully, eBay covered me and the buyer, so no money was lost in the transaction when I requested a return (it was my own fault, I came to find out, after initially thinking I was sent an Xbox360 with a broken input...stupid me). I was also really interested in the licensing thing, when it came to DLC. Turns out you can do a license swap once and it will allow you to use your Xbox download content offline, which is what I'd need to do, since the old systems didn't have built in wiFi. If anybody else ever has an issue, this seemed to be helpful in figuring out if I could swap drives and retain my games and data. I literally have 2 achievements left in Oblivion and want to get them one day without needing to replay the entire ing game. gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/207925/can-i-swap-my-xbox-360-harddrives?rq=1
