Mattel sitting on their hands while the Retro's are hotter than ever. Who's running the show over at Mattel? Is it WWE Creative?

I could really see Mattel doing “retros” again and packaging them as WWE Battlegrounds figures. They have similar styles. Thoughts?

Had to do a bit of research into what Battlegrounds was after the last few posts, but I see what you’re saying - they would be a great fit for each other As the issue seems to be getting retailers to take the line again, I’d guess a rebrand of the name at least might be one strategy. I’m not sure how on the ball the buyers for Walmart and Target are with these things, but maybe Mattel could’ve pitched them as a new line owing to a new name or something. One problem though would be the packaging - for the Retros then they basically have to stick to the Hasbro-template for the MOC market which might limit options for a rebranding. I’d still prefer an online crowd-funded made-to-order type approach for the line rather than having to rely on the big American retailers, since it seems the Ringside dream won’t happen. On that point, the countdown on the Mattel Creations website currently looks set to expire around October 10th - but it’s been delayed at least twice since the original announcement before SDCC, so not getting too excited. Plus we still have nothing to indicate that the WWE team will have any products on there at launch; really surprising how little hype there seems to be for Mattel Creations given they had a whole panel discussing the service at SDCC. But I’m sure Mattel know what they are doing.

They should at least make one more retro that comes with a championship belt, perhaps a numbered RSC exclusive. If they did this so we could get a belt who would you want as the last retro? Superstar Billy Graham seems like a obvious choice. A former champion under legends deal who never had a hasbro and gear would look great. Make it a 1:1000, real feather boa and old school diecast belt. Gold border carding each one gets shipped in MOC protector. $24.99 limit 1 per customer. Would you buy? I’d have to buy that. I think the issue with belts is that the basic and elite belts fit them fine so they didn’t see the appeal.

That doesn’t seem very viable. Look at most of the comments on the Super 7 Hawkins and Ryder figures, it’s people complaining about the price. If Mattel were doing low runs or made-to-order retro figures, they’d be significantly pricier than the retail figures were, then add the shipping fees on top, and a bunch of people would be put off by that.

If Mattel were doing low runs or made-to-order retro figures, they’d be significantly pricier than the retail figures were, then add the shipping fees on top, and a bunch of people would be put off by that. It would be interesting to know the numbers involved in something like this - the fact that Mattel don’t do these type of things with the WWE line does suggest it’s not viable even with Elite figures or a playset like the Titan Tron, but other brands seem to experiment with this type of model - that Hasbro Pulse figure had over 20,000 orders I think at $350 per figure, but I imagine the X-Men fan base is larger than the WWE fan base, never mind the WWE Retro fan base. But still, Retros at $15 like the Masters are (I think) or perhaps a little more might be doable given the value they achieve on eBay after release will make them a favourite of scalpers, and the age of the target group generally has a bit more cash to waste invest in things like this, but obviously Mattel would know all about that and still haven’t made a move in that direction so probably not. About a year ago after the Retros were axed I did a little bit of research into the old venture they had called Matty Collector (which ended before the Retros started so I had no experience of it) and I found an old quote from someone apparently at Mattel who suggested that the production number they needed to make it worthwhile in terms of optimum factory cost was around 20,000 which was why they didn’t do more limited 5,000 runs like Jakks did. If that quote is accurate then you’d think there were enough Retro fans to shift 20,000 online (especially if Mattel had mirror sites in Canada, the UK, EU, Australia, etc. to avoid pointless expenses like shipping from US and import customs), even at a higher price than the Walmart/Entertainer price level. But as I say since Mattel don’t do that with any WWE line then I’m guessing the numbers don’t work. But still, would be good to remove Walmart/Target from the equation and let the line live or die on it’s own merits rather than the notorious distribution issues in the US. It would be interesting also to know how many figures Super7 have shifted of the Major Pod figures - they have like 1.8k Patreon supporters I think, and Cardona will have bought at least 30 himself, but at that price and only being available to US outlets must limit the numbers.

Steve and Rob from Mattel discussed the Retros during the last five minutes or so of yesterday's unboxing video on ActionFigureAttack's Instagram. No new announcements or anything, but encouraging to hear their thoughts on the line, and to hear a bit of internal insight to their intentions for the Retros if they can return. www.instagram.com/tv/CF54o2tJu57/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Well , I guess we will just keep on waiting. I don’t they put Retros out while the MOTU is running . So i think we’d at least have to wait until that line ends

I found it encouraging; and I’m optimistic that retros will return at some point. Sounds like ActionFigureAttack is really on our side and is looking for a way to make it work. Until then I’ll just keep on with customising...which has become a bit of an obsession! 😂

Until then I’ll just keep on with customising...which has become a bit of an obsession! 😂 Every time I get close to giving-up then one of the Elite Squad guys says something to renew my hope Glad you mentioned customs, it reminded me that I hadn’t checked the customs thread on the forum for a while - so much fun to catch-up on the great work you guys are doing, and the updates from showbizpizzabear81 on his journey into 3D printing are very interesting - great thread Anyway, Mattel Creations finally launched today. We knew there wouldn’t be anything from WWE on launch, but now we can see properly what they are going to use the service for - doesn’t look like it’s going to have any kind of crowd-funding-type project; artistic Barbie, MOTU and Hot Wheels stuff there at high prices suggests the type of product they’ll produce there rather than a crowd-funded Elite Titan Tron or something like the Retros, Ultimates, or whatever other WWE line gets cancelled next. I guess that means we’re back to depending on Walmart and Target to bring the Retros back - and we know what that means...

Did you see the picture of it packaged on Instagram.
The figure itself doesn’t seem as good in my opinion; but fair play to them for having a go and I’m more than happy to give them my money to support their efforts & hopefully encourage them to make more (like the already announced Blue Meanie 2-pack).

Yeah I've a couple of Aldis ordered, and recently ordered two of the Blue Meanie two-pack as well. I'm on the same page as hulkjoegan with these basically - the figures aren't perfect but that's not really a realistic expectation in the circumstances I think, the main thing for me is to support the effort, especially if it leads to more in the future given the long list of guys not on terms with WWE.

Aldis look like a caucasin colored Simpsons figure. It’s really not good. I‘ve ordered two however, to support them. I will order one Blue Meanie set, but they need to improve their sculpting with their third figure or I am out.

The head does seem a little big. I’m wondering whether to remove it & replace with the TNA Jakks head...🤔

I ordered the Meanie two pack and Aldis from JB Toys on Instagram and he had said that more figures were in the works. He wasn’t able to speak too much on those figures, but, I asked if he could say if they were classic era or modern era and he was able to say that it was both. So, that’s pretty exciting! Here’s to hoping we can finish off the bWo and get Big Stevie Cool and Hollywood Nova.
