I was intrigued to see what this figure would look like... The concept art is very retro/hasbro-like; unfortunately the figure looks more hasbro era bootleg like 🤦🏻♂️ TBF it's a painted prototype I think rather than the final product. It's due in March I think. Yeah, I didn’t mean to come across as being negative. I thinks it’s great that someone is trying something. I’ve ordered one. They say if it sells out they will look at doing a series, so hope they succeed.

So yeah, why weren't the wrestlers picked like this for Retros? Jake? Piper? T? On a cool note, just by looking at the Savages and Warrior MOTU, I'd say that's what a Retro head scan would look like for those guys. I'm getting a few to convert to Retros. Jake and Piper have already been release as Hasbro's. I think they were trying to avoid releasing guys we've already got in that form factor. If they just re-released the same guys already in the Hasbro line, that wouldn't work. I thought the mix was ok. Series 2 was great, then we got Iron Shiek,JYD, Diesel. They just needed to keep the line going and stop with the doubles, like Owens, Sting etc.. I too would prefer older guys but specifically guys that didn't get a Hasbro figure like Bundy, Dino Bravo, John Stud, Bad News Brown etc.. For all the issues it had, it's still a shame MattyCollector went under/away because Retros of Bundy and Big John Studd and the like would have been perfect for that site. They could have put the repaints on there, too, and saved spaces in the retail lineups for more appropriate figures.

I love the new line, not sure if they are going to make more in the future, as there seems to be not a lot of updates on future releases. Almost like the line is dying or slagging now. I personally had issues with the ultimate warrior head sculpt. Thought hasbro did better, looked more like him. Also found the ring lacked sticker detail, looked like the overall presentation was lazy. Hasbromaniacs made customs stickers for that problem though. But not bad.

They could have put the repaints on there, too, and saved spaces in the retail lineups for more appropriate figures. When AFA said that the Retros were on hiatus to fix the line so they could bring it back better than it had been, then I think a lot of us thought that would have to mean finding a way to release them without having to rely on Walmart and Target, who really messed-up on such a basic level in terms of even putting the line out in stores, that this would likely mean that Mattel would have to launch an online sales model to meet the demand there obviously is, but not to place them at the mercy of the post-TRU mass market. Matty Collector would’ve been ideal for the line in general, and especially for guys and repaints like you suggest, but obviously that was retired before the Retros even were born. Ringside Exclusives was maybe the most obvious model for the line since a lot of the Retros were basically Ringside Exclusives anyway due to the frustrations of Walmart and Target, but it was always asking a lot for them to be able to take on a full line on top of their Elite exclusives, which have to be their priorities. Now they’re launching a new Mattel Creations, but having gone through SDCC without announcing anything at all interesting on there suggests that this won’t be the new Matty Collector. And Mattel haven’t even used their own Mattel Shop website to list new Retros, which would seem an obvious venue for them to continue the line, but I don’t know if the WWE team do anything for Mattel Shop at all, never mind with a line like the Retros - I don’t know what the politics are there. So if they are really working on bringing the Retros back (like they say they are, so obviously we expect Mattel to be on the level here) and haven’t in the space of a year announced the Retros as Ringside exclusives, or put them up on Mattel Shop, or announce something for Mattel Creations, then logically they must be aiming to bring them back to Target and/or Walmart, which I don’t think would fix the main problems, since those retailers were the problem. One thing that annoys me, is how the Retros seem to be remembered as a failure of a line, especially since the Masters line is apparently doing so well - I can’t agree with that. The Retros were intended to be a one-off series - it made it to 10 series. It was intended to be 6 figures only - in the end 44 figures were made. For all the issues with the line, it wasn’t a failure. And for that reason I can see why Mattel would want to bring it back, but it’s now over a year and there’s nothing being said about it. Why can’t they make new Retros to sell on Mattel Shop? Why can’t they use the Retros to launch Mattel Creations? We’ll probably never know since Mattel are obviously secretive about such stuff, but I’d guess it’s a corporation problem rather than a WWE Mattel team problem.

I personally only want the complete 93-95 roster + managers and earlier talent who were missing from the hasbro collection.

You make good points, Antisocial.
And I agree about the line not being a failure. To me it exceeded expectations, especially when we started getting some questionable lineups and flooding of the market with some waves. The odds were against it and still we got 10 series.

There was also that tweet last week about AEW figures and a poll about what style figures would be preferred for a legends line or something to that affect.
Sounded like they meant LJN or Hasbro style based on the years they listed.
How sweet would it be if they did Hasbro type figures of the legends they have working for them. Maybe they could execute it better than Mattel.

It’ll this happens, along with the potential chella toy line, you would think it’d help open Mattel’s eyes to the popularity of the retro line. But from how it seems, I kinda doubt it would! 🤦🏻♂️ Out of interest what legends would AEW have access to? DDP Dustin Rhodes Dusty maybe...

Mattel have just revealed a new DDP Elite (I think), so he looks to be in a similar position to Jake in that despite AEW his figure rights are with WWE. In terms of legends, they’d have potentially: Arn Anderson Tully Blanchard Dustin Rhodes (Dusty is still under a WWE legends deal I think) Taz JR Tony Schiavone Billy Gunn Jericho ...and probably a lot of others I don’t know about. I also wonder if potentially they could sign figure deals with guys on the outs with WWE - Dynamite Kid, Hercules, Paul Roma, Dino Bravo, maybe even Owen Hart

As for the guys they seem to have access to, maybe not the best lineup but still could be pretty cool.

As for the guys they seem to have access to, maybe not the best lineup but still could be pretty cool. I can’t believe I forgot about one other name: Glacier! Be honest, who wouldn’t love to have a Retro Glacier in their collections? But yeah, it’s not the quality list we hoped for with the Retros from Mattel, but still some that would be great to have in that style of figure. We already have a Retro NWA-era Flair, maybe we can get a few more Horsemen with Arn, Tully, Dean Malenko, and maybe Ole Anderson who obviously isn’t going to get in with WWE at this point? Sting’s position isn’t known yet I don’t think; if Jeff follows Matt to AEW once his WWE deal is up then there’s obvious potential there; what about the other ECW talent like Sabu, Sandman, Raven, RVD? New Jack? I don’t know if any of them are attached to any promotions now; I think Dreamer might be? But otherwise I think we would have to accept a lot of current guys to fill-out the line. Maybe they would be better accepted since AEW is more of a product that might appeal to Retro collectors than current-day WWE?

Has Steve ever said they were definitely bringing these back? I know he's said if they did come back, they'd only do it if serious changes were to be made. I think after a year, and especially seeing how well the MOTWWEU stuff is selling and how much more fanfare there is for that line, it might be time to accept these aren't coming back.

I think after a year, and especially seeing how well the MOTWWEU stuff is selling and how much more fanfare there is for that line, it might be time to accept these aren't coming back. I don't think anyone at Mattel ever makes any kind of definitive statements like that about any line outside of the trade show reveals, and even then it's just about what they are actually revealing rather than anything they are working on, or the reality of Mattel's discussions with retailers and WWE about other projects. The best we have had have been a few references from the summer through the autumn and winter about Mattel actively working on bringing the Retros back in a way that makes sense financially, and them requesting for patience while they see what they can do. Given the WWE team are running so many other lines then I doubt they have much space to work on an inactive line like the Retros, but we can only really go on what they tell us. As I keep saying we're lucky that Steve and Bill are life-long WWE fans who support the Retros themselves as childhood Hasbro fans, otherwise I think hope of a return would've been dead the minute the SDCC panel last year ended. But as it seems like SDCC is Mattel's major reveal show then the zero references to the Retros this year probably is a fatal sign for the line. Unless Steve or Bill want to comment to the contrary, then I think the line isn't coming back, especially since Mattel seems unable or at least unwilling to go the online route to cut-out the Walmart/Target issues.
