I always said that about the third one. Just because someone is doing a job I wouldn’t doesn’t make me better, it makes them better if anything for doing whatever they had to to support themselves. I always give more credit and tip well to people doing that Ahem. They made a WHOLE MOVIE about #3. One scene in particular..... I've seen that movie Waiting with Ryan Reynolds. Not a good movie but some parts are mildy funny. There is another scene like that in the movie Road Trip. This always cracks me up.

Standard faire of 15% at restaraunts unless bad service for which 10% happens. Barber $2 on a $15 haircut at Great Clips/Supercuts....those used to be cheaper. When I make $8 an hour, I can't afford much.

The harder question is if you tip at places like Sonic that has car hops. Technically its just fast food, but they do bring it to you....yet they make more then $2.13/hr Of course I do. They are bringing me my food instead of me going to them.

It’s a double standard. Only tip certain people & under certain circumstances. For example you’d tip your waitress that brings you food/drinks from a regular restaurant. But say a buffet, you most likely won’t cause you get your own food or you’d tip them a lesser amount. I work a certain job where I could receive tips. However, I don’t expect tips & im fine with it. What tips I do get I’m grateful. What I have a problem with is the whole “I live off tips” & the whole 15-20% thing. Or if you do leave something, anything under a certain amount is a slap in the face. I’ll tip if & when I want to & the % isn’t based off the total amount. i dont think you understand how it works. They don’t live off their tips, because they want too..they have to. Labor laws are ed and we allow restaurant owners to pay people jack crap, while the customers basically pay the workers. It’s a messed up system where the customer is basically guilted into tipping. So it’s not the employee, blame the laws and bosses. Yet I work a field where I can get tips & I don’t have to live off tips. If I wanted to make more money, I’d find what I needed to do to better my finances. Waiters could to. We can go around & around, but it all ends with what you think is right & wrong. I say tipping isn’t owed.

i dont think you understand how it works. They don’t live off their tips, because they want too..they have to. Labor laws are ed and we allow restaurant owners to pay people jack crap, while the customers basically pay the workers. It’s a messed up system where the customer is basically guilted into tipping. So it’s not the employee, blame the laws and bosses. Yet I work a field where I can get tips & I don’t have to live off tips. I say tipping isn’t owed. I’m not agreeing with the tipping system. It’s horse crap. But when people are saying they live off tips, doesn’t mean they are being greedy..it’s just the truth. They are paid way under minimum wage and the tips are supposed to fill the gap. It’s not as easy as “finding something to better their finances” You obviously make at least minimum, so the system doesn’t really affect you.

Finding another field of work to not need tips may just be easier said then done, but we don’t even know if they would even bother to try, knowing they can make 100-500$ a night in tips. They choose it & they can do something about it. Do you blame them? They Work a crapjob and deal with the absolute worst people, they deserve actual pay. Sometimes a night of a couple hundred dollars in tips, still won’t balance out the rest of the week. Every restaurant is not crazy busy. A lot of people are stuck doing restaurant work because usually they are the most flexible with hours. Telling a single mom that gets by because her tipping job to “ find other work” Is not always viable. Just pay people livable wages and tipping wouldn’t be an issue

Tip cause they chose to work that job (for whatever reason) & cause we don’t know their financial status, let’s just assume it’s always bad & laws/business set the rules to have them live off tips. Poor service, attitude, etc still means to tip, just a little less or the same. Guess I’ll start tipping more now cause it’s a right thing to do. Please & Thank You aren’t enough cause they don’t pay the bills. PS: Keep a list of all your do gooding & report back months later.

I always tip, even if the service was terrible. My bare minimum is three bucks and it goes up based on service. If the service is great, it'll go up to 20% of the total price. If it was trash, it'll just be the three bucks because I know all too well how little waiters make, but if it takes you 15 minutes to grab a refill of water when the restaurant is dead, I won't leave you empty handed but I'm not matching the gratuity requested minimum.
I leave three for delivery drivers, more on bad weather days or end of shift deliveries.
One time I went to Olive Garden the week of Christmas and the place was packed, and I got a clearly rookie waiter, first couple weeks. But I saw him busting his ass for me and his other tables. Bill came to about $40 for me and my friend, I gave him a $100 bill and told him to keep the change. He didn't believe me and insisted on not, but I told him that I was expecting the bill to be much higher (that was a lie we get the same things all the time), and while it wasn't, he was a great server for us and the other tables around, personable, and to keep doing what he's doing, and Happy Holidays. Made me feel good to make someone that happy, and given the whole situation, he deserved good treatment too because if you do your job above and beyond you deserve to be recognized, even if it's by a customer rather than management. Made sure to grab the manager on my way out to tell him that I left the kid a mondo tip and to not think it fishy too, so that should have shown management they had a gem of a worker even if he was greener than grass.

As a broke college student going out to dinner with a bunch of other broke college students, tipping is always something we fuss over and try hard to figure out. Food was good, server was very friendly so we were making sure to tip her well. However, we made an honest mistake in "undertipping" her by like 5% (and for a group of 9, it's a little harsh). But, the worst part was when we were leaving. After we paid off the bill and left the tip, the server comes out and literally demands a higher tip. She said something along the lines of "is that all?" multiple times and stubbornly walked away. I get that she must've worked all day and dealt with some clowns, but to me, it was the most unprofessional thing I had ever seen. From the goodness of our hearts, we corrected our mistake and gave her the tip we were going for, only to be met with a sarcastic "thanks" and side eye. I probably won't visit that restaurant ever again with the fear of my status as a broke college student interfering with something completely optional ever so apparent.

A waiter/waitress shouldn’t go after people for low tips unless it’s an extreme case. Once I waited on a party of 50 people. They rented out the whole place for 5 hours, so I wasn’t going to get any other tables. At the end of busting my butt the whole time and catering to their demands, their total bill was something like $780. They left me a $10 tip. I went to my boss and was like “Don’t call me to work these parties anymore. I came in on my day off and wasted my time for $10.” He managed to get ahold of the person that put together the party and was like “If you’re going to book a party with me and break my balls for discounts on everything, the least you can do is take care of the waiter. Don’t try to look like a big shot at the expense of other people. Next time you want to have a party somewhere, don’t call me. You’re not welcome back.” So there’s cases where people undertip and cases where the tip is insulting. When I was a waiter I wouldn’t go after someone that undertipped. At least it’s something and a lot of times it’s either a miscalculation or just not being sure what to leave or not having enough cash on hand. Although, if business is good and you know you can fill the tables, there’s a trick you can use to not serve bad tippers. When they show up you can just be like “Sorry. We have a lot of reservations tonight. We don’t have any tables available.” It generally pays off if you’re smart about when you do it. In my experience, the notoriously bad tippers are generally the type of people that come in with a party of 4-6 people, drink free water, and split 2 dinners.
