So I'm currently in the middle of saving as I'm going to WrestleMania next year in New York. Only trouble is, I've never been to America before and I'm a little anxious as I don't have a clue when it comes to travelling. I may end up having to go it alone as I'm not banking on my friend saving up enough in time. I'm just looking for details on everything I'll need really.
- I'll be getting my new passport this month, so that's easily taken care of.
- Buying my package and booking my flights should hopefully be easy enough.
- One of my friends seems to think that I need a credit card to go to America, is this true? I've never had a credit card in my life, nor do I want one. My debit card is a Visa, surely I can just use that? Also, what is it exactly I would need it for?
- After getting my passport, buying my package and booking my flights, is there anything else I need to do?
- Can I just use my bank card in America for paying for things or will I need to get American cash beforehand?
- Is there anything else I need to know?
Thanks. I'm completely clueless but we all have to start somewhere!

You don't need a credit card to come here. I'm not sure how your friend got that idea. Your Visa card should work but I'd contact them just in case. You'll definitely want to let them know a few weeks in advance that you'll be traveling internationally so they don't think your card info was stolen and freeze your account. The last thing you want us to be stuck in a foreign country with no access to your money.
I think you've got a pretty good start. You seem to have most of the basics covered.

Call your bank and see if your card is usable abroad. I think it would benefit you to get cash upon ariving in america as the interest rates work in your advantage. Also, you’ll want to notify your bank when you leave so they don’t freeze your account. Typically, a bank will freeze an account based on strange charges and charges from outside your normal areas. I had a card frozen when I worked in North Dakota. Which sucked for about 3 days going without money until they managed to unfreeze me and authenticate my whereabouts. I would study the area you are going to. There are many places in New York that you don’t want to end up in. I had bad encounters in Jamaica, Queens, and Red Hook area. Lastly, if you can, ship your purchases back home, they will gouge you on additional backage and back in customs.

Your card should work here. They may charge you a fee but it should work. A couple years ago my cousin visited from Italy and he was able to use his Amex card.
You should call visa though just to let them know where you will be so charges don’t get flagged as potential fraud.

Hotels require a credit card when checking in. That’s about it really. As for spending, I’d recommend getting a Travelex card and putting your spending money on that. You may get charged for each transaction when using your own card.

Also am I able to use my debit card at ATM machines?

Excellent, thank you. Yeah I think I'll do that. The card is so they can take a deposit right? How much do they typically take, about $300?

Yeah I think I'll do that. The card is so they can take a deposit right? How much do they typically take, about $300? Rooms are "held" on the card. Its basically just on file in case you go full Hangover and destroy everything. You dont actually get charged until you check out at the end of your stay. Say your stay in the hotel is $300 (just a random number)...When you go to check out at the end of your stay they *should* ask if its going on the card. If you say yes they will charge the card if you say no you can give another means of payment...which could be another card or cash.

Also am I able to use my debit card at ATM machines? It depends on the hotel. I tried using my debit card at The Wynn in Vegas last year and got told its credit card only. You’re best off emailing the hotel beforehand just to make sure. You can use a debit card at an ATM machine. You’ll probably have to pay a few dollars per transaction though.

I'm just looking for details on everything I'll need really. - I'll be getting my new passport this month, so that's easily taken care of. Good that you're getting it sorted well in advance! Just don't lose it lol.- Buying my package and booking my flights should hopefully be easy enough. The WWE packages are good and save hassle. Flights use skyscanner or similar sites to get them cheapest.- One of my friends seems to think that I need a credit card to go to America, is this true? I've never had a credit card in my life, nor do I want one. My debit card is a Visa, surely I can just use that? Also, what is it exactly I would need it for? Never had that issue before. But then again it has been my parents booking the hotels.- After getting my passport, buying my package and booking my flights, is there anything else I need to do? Need to get an ESTA. They last two years and cost about $10.- Can I just use my bank card in America for paying for things or will I need to get American cash beforehand? You should be able to, but will more than likely incur an additional charge. Better to get dollars.- Is there anything else I need to know? If you don't have an uber account over here, make one over there. Google some voucher codes and you can usually get stuff like $20 free ride for your first ride. Book transfers from airport to hotel in advance. Familiarise yourself with your surrounding area. Map out subway routes, bus routes etc unless you plan on getting cabs everywhere. US prices don't include tax so remember to factor that in, think NY tax is about 9%. Goes without saying but don't do anything stupid either.Thanks. I'm completely clueless but we all have to start somewhere! Been to the states 15+ times so hopefully I can help.

Are you Aussie?? Yes you will need an ESTA visa (online application really quick and easy) Yes your debit card will work as long as it is VISA/MASTERCARD, but you will pay exchange rate fees to VISA/MASTERCARD, your bank and possibly a third party. Get a Travelex card or if you are Aussie, you can get special debit cards you can load with what ever currency you like, you will save on paying fees and it should also be debit and all cards should work in their ATM. Just make sure you load the card wellllll before you leave the country though. Also let your bank know your travel dates, if you don't and use your card they will LOCK it as they will believe it is stolen, then you will spend a lot of money on the phone getting it fixed. Americans are big on "TIPPING" besides getting paid by their employer, they feel you MUST pay them as well, even if service is bad. You choose how much % tip you wanna leave if you pay on card. So get ready to tip away my friend. Always have cash on you. Tipping kills me every time. Also have in mind when you buy stuff the price shown is not the final price so if you have $20 and the shirt says $20... sorry but when you check out they add the Tax... every state's rates are different. Yes get a package from a Travel Agent they have packages that include Axxess, HOF, NXT, Mania, RAW & Smackdown! flights and hotels included. Remember there are other things going on outside of WWE, WrestleCon and indie shows you gotta book yourself. Don't be too friendly, especially in New York people there seem mostly pissed off and rude at the world, so don't overly do it or people may get insulted, don't take em personal though. Have fun! Maybe I will see you there Ps. Thongs there are g-strings - NOT SANDALS (they call them Flip Flops) and they don't call telephones that either (instead they call them Ring Rings) and Cows (moo moos)

If you come to Los Angeles, make sure and visit skid row. Such a beautiful and unforgettable place.

If you intend to sight see, use the subway system. I went to New York (From the UK) last February and got around smoothly using trains. Just find a good map of the city and you'll soon pick up which stations to get on.

I know a lot of people don’t like having one but you should be able to find a company that will offer you one for 0% interest for the first 2 years so after your trip you can pay it off and get rid of it. If you do pay anything by card and they offer you to pay in £ or $, always pay dollars. For flights keep an eye out for sales, when I booked my flights I got them in a British Airways sale and the price was a lot less than what they were the previous week. Get a week rail card when you go over, let’s you go anywhere in NY and is very cheap. £30 I think but could be wrong. NY is easy to get around by train. I stayed in Brooklyn, went to Manhattan every day. Trains on 24 hours. I went to NY for Summerslam a couple of years back from Scotland so anything else you want to know just message.

I apologize on behalf of my country for the rude people and filthy conditions you will encounter here, especially in New York City/New Jersey. I'm sorry.

And a word of advice- don't walk around with an "I❤NY" shirt. You will stick out like a sore thumb & are just asking to get messed with.
