It was a close call. They called the penalty. Not like they called it just to call it. So you're saying all drivers have to do is whine and cry and they should get relieved of any POSSIBLE wrongdoing? Seems fair.

There is never a time that NASCAR is conflicted on their ruling of a penalty - like tonight - and they decide that the penalty stands. They [Gibbs] plead their case about the entrance to pit road and NASCAR reviewed the tape, made the call of allowing them to remain in their position. Everyone can plead their case about penalties like this when it's close/a judgment call.

Kyle & Dave Rogers obviously believed that the entry to pit road was legal per the drivers meeting/rule book. They plead their case to NASCAR and they reviewed the penalty. It's the same thing that EVERYONE can do with penalties. When NASCAR is unsure because it is a close call.. it should be an obvious no-call. NASCAR screwed up by even calling it in the first place.. if they weren't even sure.

They were sure, they called the penalty. They were as sure as the engine rod was light in the 20 car after Kansas. It seemed like in order to shut him up, they just let him stay where he was. Instead of launching a federal investigation as to whether or not 1/32 of the outline of his tire ran over a painted box, they let him go.

Stewart-Haas has applied for trademarks for the #4, signaling that Kevin Harvick could drive that car when he makes the move to the team in 2014. The #8 is also in play, and it's a possibility that he brings the #29 to SHR because Richard Childress could put Austin Dillon in the #3 when he comes up to Sprint Cup full-time in 2014.

Keselowski and Logano both lost their initial appeals today. They have the final appeal step, which they will be taking. That is set for next Tuesday at 10AM, so all suspended crew members are eligible to work Talladega this weekend.

I wouldnt mind seeing Harvick in the #4 car honestly. That was one of the original numbers discussed for Newman's car before deciding on #39. (I believe 39 is one of Newmans open wheel numbers). I know Stewart chose 14 because of Foyt but not sure if he or Stewart (or Harvick) have any ties to #4. Would be good to see it back in Nascar. Its a great traditional number from the days of Morgan-McClure Racing with Sterling Marlin & Ernie Irvin.
Would be great for marketing too if Harvick brings Budweiser with him. It could be marketed as "This Bud's 4 you"

Denny Hamlin has been cleared by doctors & NASCAR to start the race on Sunday. He won't run the entire race though. I'm glad he's back for a lap, but hope he'll run the entire race at Darlington.

^ always good to see someone from the 'nobody' teams win (personally I was rooting for Scott Speed to win the restrictor plate crapshow but whatever). Great for David, great for Front Row.
I liked Newman's little tirade, too, especially about running in the rain and in the dark. I honestly thought they would've called it a race after the big one.

Well, the Smith/Allmendinger/Dillon trio for the #51 will have to find new plans after the Brickyard. Phoenix Racing owner James Finch has no plans to enter any races after that. He said he wants to leave racing altogether, after a now-combined 776 starts between Nationwide and Sprint Cup. Lack of a long-term sponsor was cited as the main reason, plus Finch's age - he's 62 - and he wants to do something else with his time now. He also doesn't want to sink every penny he has into the team, as he's been footing the bill personally, with the lack of sponsorship on the #51.
In other news, Jeff Gordon will make his 700th career start. That's 700 consecutive starts too, mind you. Could there be a new Iron Man in NASCAR? Ricky Rudd is the holder of that title with 788 consecutive starts. After the 2013 season, Jeff will be about a season and a half away from the record. I hope he gets it. Always liked Jeff. First real favorite driver and I'll always be a fan.
