Is Civil War really a good beginning though? I ask because it's such a recent storyline. I know if someone asked this question about DC I would tell them to start with Crisis on Infinite Earths. In my mind, all of DC spins off from there and that's a 15 year old storyline. I'm not knocking Civil War as I really, really enjoyed it and would recommend it, but there were parts of it I couldn't entirely follow as I had no clue who the characters were or what their backstory was. Is Civil War the Marvel equivalent of crisis? You might also look at the ultimate universe. I enjoyed that a lot up until Ultimatum. I don't think I read any after that. :'(I didnt read much DC other then the Blackest Day arc. I think Civil War is great just because you get the most bang for your buck so to speak. The books not only had the Avengers at the center but every other hero and villain in it as well. Not only that the art was so amazing in the main books. for me it was the first time seeing anything from Steve McNiven. The Civil War sets up the next four or five years of cross over books that effected every character. From the Civil War we had the Initiative then WWH, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign and finally Siege. All these stories had to deal with the Marvel Universe as a whole rather then just certain parts. And we saw how the decisions made during each story would effect the next right away. It was like a complete series of interesting event take place with out the fear of waiting to see what would happen next. We all just kept reading, that's how entertaining it was. Not to mention that all those crossovers effected other books as well, good and bad. Spider-man for example (bad), did a complete do over on his life. IronMan (good) had some of his best years of stories during that time too. Cap was "killed" and Bucky came to take over, which i think was a pretty cool idea.

if you're considering starting at Civil War, I would definitely consider starting at House of M instead to get what leads up to that event. New Avengers Illuminati as well.

I'm looking to start with House of M, and then move onto Civil War. The question I have is I've seen so many different Civil War stories, is there one volume that has them all? If not, what do I need to get?

If not, what do I need to get? well just like any other Marvel event there's a main story and then a bunch of side stories along with what goes on in all the other books, IronMan , Cap, Hulk and etc. The main books to read is just titled Civil War, but you'll want to read the side stories of Spider-Man, IronMan , Cap and the Avengers. Wolverine too as he goes for the person that started the whole war in the first place. The best thing about these stories are that the side stories are around three to five issues each so you wont have to collect very many if you choose to buy them 1st print. The TPB are also pretty cheap of you want to go with those.

I started when the Heroic Age books came out and I didn't miss a beat. Start with the first trades of the newest Avengers, New Avengers, and whatever other characters you enjoy and you'll do just fine. As for Deadpool, starting with his latest series works well too. I'd read up a little on the Secret Invasion and Dark Reign as a primer, but entering around the time of the Heroic Age stuff is perfect.

if were talking about starting when things really started to go down hill for the Marvel Universe then Avengers Disassembled would be best then.

I've only just recently got back into comic collecting & reading gain, however, I'm one of these people that likes to get Graphic Novels / Collective Editions / Omnibus style Books as I prefer everything in a Hardback collection than lots of monthly issues all over the place.
So far I have........
Avengers Omnibus Volume 1 (Collecting Issues 1 - 30) House of M (Collecting Issues 1 - 8) Bendis' New Avengers Volume 1 - Volume 7 Oversized Hardback Collections (Collecting New Avengers 1 - 64, Illumanati 1 - 5, etc)
With just getting back into the whole Comic Book shenanigans, was reading through people's posts here to see recommendations.
Can anybody recommend me Graphic Novels / Collectives leading up to House of M & the best Graphic Novels / Collectives for the things leading up to Civil War, Siege, etc, etc & best way to keep up with cross overs, I imagine you have to follow the Comics of individual characters more, but there are some I like or prefer more than others.
Plan on getting Avengers Disassembled to see what lead up to New Avengers, Plan on starting New Avengers (2010) with Volumes 1 & 2 which will take me from Issues 1 - 13 & also plan starting Mighty Avengers.
Love Bendis' work, but he seems to have A LOT going on that is just hard to keep up with, even with the Graphic Novels / Collectives & the way some of them are compiled.
Would love some X-Men stuff recommended that went on round about the time of House of M also.
So far, shunquan's timeline of events has given me a good basis to go off for round about the stuff I'm reading at the moment.
Thanks guys, look forward to hopefully discussing more of the Marvel Universe with you here or in any other threads as I've really jsut got back into reading again & catching up on everything.

Starting the modern era from the series leading up to Civil war is god I would say. That is the biggest event in the modern era (imo) if youre looking to start deadpool I would read deadpool MAX which i personally dislike but as a DP fan you might like it

I just finished reading X-Men Season One and am currently on Fantastic Four Season One. I'm also planning on getting the Spider-Man and Daredevil Season One's as well. I just started collecting Marvel and started off with the two I mentioned plus I also read Avengers: The Origin, which like Season One's is basically a modern retelling of their origins. But I was wondering if anybody knew if there are updated origin stories for Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Namor, Elektra, Hawkeye, Black Panther and Ghost Rider as well.

Deadpool is a featured character in Uncanny X-Force which is an awesome series still in its early issues. 18 I think. Vol 1 of the graphic novel is out and called "The Apocalypse Solution" and Vol 2 "Dark Angel" is coming out next month I believe.

I think House of M is a better starting point than Civil War. I mean, if you REALLY want to catch up, I'd tell you to start with Secret Wars and Infinity Gauntlet. was thinking of picking up the infinity gauntlet or the korvac saga. any suggestions on these two?

Well Infinity Gauntlet is a must read for any comic fan if you ask me. Korvac less so to me, but it is a good read.
