You can't give the man any other gimmick besides the nature boy, even Vince knew that. Luger, anyone else I understand

Luger, anyone else I understand cause in Herd's mind,he felt the "key" to Vince's success was that he created "characters" rather than wrestlers.so he felt the need to take his guys and start making them into cartoonish characters too...

I understand that...but my questions is why Flair of all the other people on the roster. Flair was a household name for the southern territory he was a very well established name, he was the man. You can't reinvent your top star no matter what the situation the fans wouldn't have bought it. He could of taken anyone else and tried this dumb gimmick with anyone else. His logic to pull a stunt like this Flair just shows why he failed in the wrestling business.

I think it was a way for him to force his will on Flair as he seen him as a threat to his authority.obviously it didnt work(thank God)and Flair ended up hitting the bricks and heading to Vinnietown!!

yeah,Flair and Herd weren't on the best of terms,so it was just another way to put the screws to Naitch...
but he had plans for a lot of guys to become colorful characters...i think the only one who was safe was Sting, because he was already a colorful character....
the final breakdown came when Flair was planning to leave, and Herd wanted Flair to drop the WHC to Luger at the Great American Bash in 1991...then about 2 weeks or so before that,he change his mind and decided to have Flair drop it at a house show to Barry Windham...then a day later he called up Flair again and said "F-it! You're fired now!" and demanded the Belt back...when Flair asked for his security deposit plus the interest accumulated on it,Herd balked,so Flair got to keep the Belt for awhile, and famously headed to the WWF with it as the REAL World's Champion...
wasn't long after that Herd was canned...

I really wish Windham would have had a nice long run with that belt at least once.

Didn't Herd also want to create a hunchback character who couldn't be pinned because his shoulders didn't touch the mat?

Didn't Herd also want to create a hunchback character who couldn't be pinned because his shoulders didn't touch the mat? yep,he would go undefeated for a long time, til eventually he'd be in a falls count anywhere match, where the plan was for his opponent to dig a small home in the ground so that way the hunched part would go in the hole, thereby having his shoulders touching the ground and allowing the pin.... no,seriously, these were plans! Kevin Sullivan, who was on the booking committee said that last part in jest when Herd brought up the Hunchback character, but Herd LOVED the idea!!!

To be honest I don't think there was ever much interest in Ric Flair. I think the only reason they brought him over in 91 was so Hogan could beat him. I think the plan was for Flair to win the title at Royal Rumble 92 and drop it to Hogan in Wrestlemania 8. But then the steroid trial kicked off and Hogan was leaving so they had him drop it to Randy Savage instead. They still kept him in the main event picture for a while but only so he could win it back from Savage and then drop the title to Bret. After that he just seemed to flounder up until he left.
