How far in advance was it known that WWE had bought WCW? Meaning was it kept a secret until the Raw/Nitro happened or was it well known ahead of time? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What were the reasons that WWE didnt instantly snap up WCW's bigger names, Sting, Goldberg, Steiner, Flair etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I remember Paul Heyman randomly started announcing with JR in 2001 and i can't remember the onscreen reason for this, was it ever given? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks

1. i'm pretty sure it was known that WWF had bought them over but i can't put a timeline on it. to add another question was WWF publicly traded at the time? if they were i'd imagine they would have to announce to Wall Street that they had bought them over.
2. all the above were contracted to Time Warner and it would have cost a fortune (money well spent IMO) to acquire them. I don't think Sting had any interest in signing anyway and Steiner had such a bad reputation and a multitude of injuries that the WWF didn't want to take the risk.
As a side note, a few months before Steiner actually signed, the WWF/E had sent him for a few medicals and even though he was declared fit, it still took them several months to actuall sign him to a contract.
3 i found this video on youtube and it seems that it is the same as the off screen reason - mainly Jerry Lawler walked out in protest of Stacey Carter - his then wife - being fired

the WCW buyout only became known like a week before the final Nitro aired...i remember when Fusient was going to buy it,then it was on the net like the Wednesday or something before the final Nitro that Vince had bought it,and i was calling all my friends to tell them....

On rise&fall it said WCW was bought on a friday and then that monday was the last nitro.
Most big name WCW were on the AOL contract and decided to just stay home and get paid. Like Jeff Jarrett said on the TNA dvd alot of them refered it to "the summer of no worries"
And like nibs said jerry lawler quit to try and save Kat and Heyman (knowing ECW was going down) came out an announced. I think it was Riseand Fall too Dreamer said there was talk of ECW ending but they had a PPV scheduled in early march but when he seen Heyman come out on Raw he knew ECW was done right then

1)Originally it was Eric Bishoff and his group who were very close to buying it but secretly they were negoting with Vince. Vince was set to buy it, but at the time the sale was to be with a TV deal, and Titan didnt allow it. Then Bishoff was going to buy it again but his supporters backed out upon TNN wanting to sell it without the TV Deal, which left Vince being able to buy it.
2) The big names were sitting out the remainder of their contracts. Vince didnt want to offer them more because then top talents like Austin and Taker would want more money.
