Hey guys!
First off, let me say that while Shawn Michaels isn't my favorite of all time but he certainly is one of my favorites. There are only a couple of other guys I respect more than Shawn Michaels for what they've accomplished. Also, HBK is responsible for some of the greatest matches of all time. However, that being said I always felt that HBK in the 90s was a bit of a over seller.
What I mean is, when you watch some of Shawn's matches in the 90s he would constantly bump and flip and flop all around the ring in ways that just weren't...believeable. I think when Shawn returned in 2002 he was better than ever and with the exception of that Summerslam match with Hogan..he didn't really use the oversell technique.
I'm no professional wrestler nor have I had any formal training. However, I know what looks authentic and what doesn't. I always felt HBK in the 90s was a little phony. Anybody else feel this way?
Again, not trying to start any drama and that's not the purpose of this thread. I'm just curious as to how you other "old school" guys view this topic.
Thanks for reading!
EDIT: Here's a video I found of him overselling to Hogan at Summerslam. I know THIS particular sell job was meant to be a rib but I'm including it just for laughs:

While he had some great matches back in the 90's, I still think that his 2002-2010 run was a hell of a lot better, with this probably being one of the factors.

Its one reason why I was never a big Michaels fan. Nothing seemed real about him getting beat up.

at times it was great and at other times it was ridiculous and overdid it. still, when it worked, it worked.

But I can say that during the early 90's I can see what you mean. He did over do things at the wrong times. But hey man, thats just apart of wrestling. I mean:

I feel that while he was very GOOD in the 90s his return was so much better because not only did he mature mentally but in the ring as well. Also, don't even get me started on the Flair flop(s). Ugh....

have to say i've seen the Flair flop countless times and it still makes me laugh. didn't Greg "the Hammer" do something similar where he would just fall flat without any body movement?

He wasnt as dramatic in his oversells in those matches either though.

his matches w/ vader and sid were also well done, as over selling monsters makes perfect sense. which is a big reason hbk worked as the small man vs. larger man dynamic.

I always thought the rock was over the top with selling the moves, cant recall one time he didnt push himself into the ropes and bouncing off after a stunner.

Its taken me years to actually like Shawn Michaels, can't deny he's a great talent, he used to just do my head in. I actually love watching his matches now. He definitely oversold to the point of ridiculousness at times though.
