I've done a few threads about classic PPV's, but after watching a few PPVs from 2001, I couldn't pick, so I've decided to do one on this year. This year is widley kinda hated, I don't get it, I LOVED and still do LOVE 2001. The storys were everchanging, every match seemed to mean something. The WCW Invasion, many see was a bust, but come on, nobody can say while it was going on that they weren't loving it, adding the ECW guys added more aggression and intensity aswell.
I do have some questions/theories though, and instead of whoring the board up, I thought I'd just kinda bunch them together here.
#1 - Austin heel run Now, after watching KOTR01 last night, how Austin was 'needing' Vince, JR and Heyman kept on saying about how Austin was cracking, and losing it. This got me thinking, was there a psychological reason for it, a reason very few have actually gotten and accepted. "I need to beat you Rock, I need it more than you'd ever imagine" This line sums it up for me, Austin needed to win, he'd do anything to win it, even sell his soul. Right, now why? Could it have been that Austin had lost the confidence? He came off of losing to Trips at NWO, he'd been out for a year a few months back, his wife was with Rock, Austin had lost his confidence and who's the only person who could guarantee a win, the owner of the company. This could also explain why he join with Trips and started killing the roster, he had gotten this faulse sense of confidence.
#2 Original Invasion plans Pretty simple, 01 suffered pretty badly with horribly-timed injuries. Trips and Beniot namely (plus Rock's 6 month leave). What was the original plan if anyone knows. Why was Beniot getting such a push at the KOTR01, was he originally to go to WCW as Champ?
So yea, if anyone could answer or comment then go ahead or hell even if you have some other theories or little tidbits of news post 'em too, and if not, discuss what you loved about 2001.

I quite like your analysis of the Austin situation. I thought that alot happened in 2001 in wwf. I think as many do the invasion angle started so well (the invaision ppv) had a massive buy rate but wcw guys were getting squashed too easy. At the time I liked it but looking back, handled correctly, there could have been feuds that lasted years had stars from wcw been built right. It took booker t years to win the top prize in wwe and it was if he had to prove himself. A former 5 time world champion shouldn't have had too prove his worth for so long. Booker was over big time in 2002.
Going back to Austin, I thought his psychology was good and his heel turn was very well done at mania. The general uneasiness of stone colds character was compelling and hilarious to watch

hated the Austin heel turn and complete U turn in his character.
was excited as hell for the start of the Invasion and the PPV itself(I was convinced many more top names would show at the PPV)
but when Austin turned on WWF and the Alliance became the J.O.B. Squad V2 I was totally disinterested.Stephanie Mcmahon becoming the boss of ECW was the first nail in the coffin-Austin turning was the last.just couldnt get behind it.
I came unglued when the "old" Stone Cold came back but I nearly went beserk when he turned.jericho should have been given that spot.would have done wonders for him.
lots of greatness there matchwise but overall.....I found it a bad year and still do.Austin winning the Rumble was the highlight of the year for me.

I actually liked the year 2001. Sure the invasion storyline was a little messed up, but they probably had plans that were ruined by injuries and not getting the people they probably wanted for the storyline (Sting/Goldberg/etc.)

i still think that whole austin heel turn was garbage, as they could've really brought him back to the peak of his popularity through being the one to 'lead the wwe through the darkness.'

The first half of 2001 was great. The second half sucked big time.
I loved Austin's heel turn for the first couple of months. His character was built around being obsessed w/ the WWF Title and would do anything to get and keep it. That was why he joined up w/ Vince. I liked his paranoid character, but the only problem was that they turned him heel in his home town, so it kinda killed the turn because his hometown was going to cheer him no matter what.
Once he joined the Alliance is where his heel turn got screwed up. He went from a dominant heel champ in the WWF to a scared, weak champ in the Alliance. Having Austin cry was the nail in the coffin for his heel character IMO.
As for the whole Alliance angle, it was screwed up big time. It could have worked even w/ the few big names that they had, but they jobbed DDP and Booker T out fast and made guys like Test and Christian, mid-carders from the WWF at the time, look better than them. Austin joining made no sense what so ever, and Stephanie "owning" ECW was basically Vince spiting on the ECW grave.
W/ Benoit, he, and Jericho, were both given big pushes because they were both over and Austin and HHH needed new rivals. After going through The Rock, Taker, and Kane, Benoit and Jericho were the next guys in line to fight them. IMO the origional plan was probably for both Benoit and Jericho to join the Alliance after getting screwed multiple times by Austin, HHH, and Vince. When Benoit got hurt, plans were probably changed to Austin joining the Alliance instead. Just how I thought things were going at the time.

Was never a fan of most the WCW roster so I enjoyed 2001. Angle and Austin's feud in still in my top ten of all time.

i didn't have a problem with Austin turning heel...i DID have a problem with the aftermath...
yeah, fine,he aligned with Vince to get his belt back, but right after that he should've turned on Vince as well...a return to the DTA,1996-early 1997 heel Austin who didn't give a damn about anyone, didn't care about the fans, and did whatever it took to win,period...
instead,he became part of a trifecta with Trips and Vince, then joined the Alliance, and was relegated to singing songs to Vince....ridiculous.

2001 started out AMAZING!
Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania X-Seven are classics.
Things began to fall flat with the Invasion storyline and the rest of the year felt rushed and confusing.

At the end of the day for me with 2001 is, did the PPV's deliver? Name a bad PPV from 2001 and I'll show a green dog. It doesn't exist, friends!

Summerslam - Mostly average matches and a bunch of squash jobs w/ DDP and Kanyon in one of the worst squashes I've ever seen against Taker and Kane in a cage match. The Rock no sold Booker T's finisher and dominated their match. RVD/Hardy was sloppy too. Jericho/Rhyno and Austin/Angle were the only matches worth watching. Unforgiven - Austin/Angle and Jericho/RVD are the only matches worth watching. Taker and Kane squash Kronik(though Kronik did suck), The Rock squashed Booker and Shane in a joke match where he dominated, and Christian/Edge had no chemistry together.

Austin's heel turn was fine when he was the "Bionic redneck" and had this music:
However, that hugging Vince McMahon all the time crap...was crap.
