Hey everyone. To make it as short and simple as possible, I began watching the WWE in January of 2002. Hulk Hogan was my favorite wrestler, and when he returned to the red and yellow I was a full on Hulkamaniac. My question is this: I wasn't aware of dirt sheets, politics and things of that nature, I was a kid that was a pure fan. Looking back, I was wondering if anyone could share some info on Hogan's 02-03 run, such as politics (WWF Undisputed Title run), things of that nature. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

well with his title run there was some backstage controversy.
HHH was schedualed to go over Hogan cleanly.but during that day Vinnie decided that because of the wave of nostalgia for Hogan waving over the fans that he would give Hogan the title.
HHH was furious and Stephanie pleaded with Vince in public to change his mind.she then threw a massive temper tantrum when he said he was going ahead with his plan.
man I would have loved to see that.

I knew there had to be some kind of controversy. I had followed Triple H's Wrestlemania X8 Championship win, and even as a kid (I knew it was pre-determined) I wondered why his run was so short. Also, why was Hogan's run so short? I mean I know the Title bounced around alot during this era, but he was insanely over with the crowd.

Ill be honest, Hogan deserved 3 of his 6 title reigns. The first one, 3rd one and the 6th one.
Hogan was so over in 84 and 03? that it would have been stupid not to put the belt on him. Even though Warrior was a decent draw, Hogan was still the main even guy and the one everyone came to see so it was only fitting he get the title. The win over Savage and Yoko should have never happened. At least not at that time in the case for Savage and never against Yoko. His win over Taker was just blah...It was a huge cluster at the time

Hulk got the belt on the back of the WMX8 reaction he got. Not sure if Hulk politicked for the belt, but Vince heard the crowd that night and must have thought Hulk had one last run in him.
Dunno why he only held it for a month, perhaps to do with HHH constant moaning for Hulk to drop it perhaps? Not sure.

Triple H wishes he could have been half the draw Hogan was. That's one thing that has always bugged me about Triple H, I like him as a wrestler but he (and his family machine known as the WWE) try to make it like he's one of the top 3 greatest of all times when in fact it could barely break the top 10....and i do mean barely if at all.

If we're going with only WWE, I like your top 7 (flair would drop just judging his WWE run but still top 10), I would add Macho, Andre, Sammartino and Piper all before Triple H...Then you could get him into the argument but even then you could put him behind someone like Foley, Warrior or someone like that. If you add on NWA/WCW guys, Id throw Sting and Rhodes over him as well

I would agree, the Yoko Championship win was unnecessary, Hogan was nearly done with the WWF at the time anyway, and the "New Generation" was about to begin.

I disagree about Hogan and Savage.Hogan should most certainly have beat Savage it was the only conclusion to the storyline that made sense.that gate also approved.Hogan vs Savage was both mens most sucessful program financially.
Hogan got the W over Yoko for two reasons.
1)he and Vince agreed WM MUST have a happy ending.
2) he swore he would put Bret over at Summerslam 2003.of course we all know he renaged on this.

Im not so much as saying Hogan should have beaten Savage but I dont think he should have beaten him when he did. Savage deserved a Wrestlemania as world champion where he didnt have to share the spotlight with Hogan. -WM III it was arguably the greatest Mania match ever with Savage vs Steamboat and its forgotten because of Hogan vs Andre -WM IV he won the world title by winning four matches but most of the talk was about Hogan vs Andre II and of course at the end of the night Hogan was still there. -WM V Hogan went over clean -WM VI Savage vs Warrior was probably the best match of the "main events" but once again, its more about Hogan vs Slaughter -WM VIII The world title should always go on last. It should ALWAYS be the main event...Instead Savage wins the belt half way through and Hogan ends the event. Savage never got his "moment". I dont know how they could have worked it, either Hogan wins by DQ or Savage gets himself counted out or even have Savage vs someone else...But Savage needed at least one shot in the spotlight.

I understood him getting the belt in 2002, but I felt like it killed any momentum Triple H had coming out of WM. They basically turned the RR winner into a transactional champion

Up to that point, Jericho had held it from December-March, then HHH had it for about a month, Hogan had it for a month, then the rest of the year seemed like the Championship bounced around with Undertaker, Rock, Brock Lesnar, Big Show, and Kurt Angle.

Hogan should have never had that run he was so washed up by then. Only old man I have no problem with holding a belt is Flair.

The whole thing w/ Hogan getting the titlt in 2002 was because of the reaction he got at WM18 against The Rock. Hogan was actually one of the more over guys in the company at the time, so it made sense that he would go over HHH, since his feud w/ Jericho and Stephanie had bombed pretty badly. Sadly, Hogan's reign was ended quickly becuase the WWE's popularity was still down from the terrible Invasion angle, and Vince seemed to be passing the title around to anybody who could try and get rating back up.
Hogan was also scheldualed to win the title again from Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series, but plans changed. Brock beat Hogan before SummerSlam, and the plan was for Hogan to win the rematch at Survivor Series, and then for Hogan to drop it back to Lesnar a month or two later. Vince obviously didn't want Hogan to defeat his new, young champ, and Big Show got Hogan's spot. I actually prefer what happened because Big Show needed the push far more than Hogan, and that win over Lesnar turned him from a jobber into an instant main eventer.

I thought Hogan was still in good ring condition at the time, he could still move smoothly and didn't have many botches. At the same time, he was 49, older than most, but he could still hang with the guys.
