I noticed that at Wrestlemania VII, Savage was still the Macho King, and by the time Summerslam '91 rolled around, he was the Macho Man again.
I was just curious if anyone remembers if there was a specific interview or promo when Macho announced the name change or something like that, or if it was just quietly changed and never mentioned again.

Well, after his retirement match, Queen Sherri left him and he reunited with Miss Elizabeth.

Well, after his retirement match, Queen Sherri left him and he reunited with Miss Elizabeth. Right. And then he became a commentator on Superstars. I was just wondering if he just quietly starting calling himself Macho Man again, or if there was a particular moment when he changed his name, said he was no longer King, etc.

no,he never explicitly said he wasn't the "Macho King" anymore or threw the crown in the trash or something...he was the MK at WM VII .... then when he started doing the announcing gig he was just the "Macho Man" again,no explanation given...

Gorilla Monsoon actually says something on commentary at WM7 when Macho and Liz are in the ring at the end and refers to him as Macho Man.

Interesting read. I hate it when character/name changes aren't explained. and seemingly gradual changes to names annoy me as well. either decide on a name and stick to it, or if it's gonna change, change it with confidence not gradually.

yesah no explanation given but then again-none needed.
Macho King was retired at WM7 and Queen Sherri left him.....it was the dismantling of the Macho King heel character.

During his WM7 post match interview, Savage said the phrase, "The Kingdom of the Madness is cracked in half". A few seconds later, Mean Gene seem to stumble and call him "Macho...M..King?"
I always thought this was the WWF's sly hint that Savage had lost his "Kingship", for whatever it was worth.

I figured it was right after he lost. Seeing as how the "King" was king of like an unrecognized title, once he retired he had to forfeit it. 6 Months later Bret Hart won his first KOTR Title.

I had forgotten about that tourney.....Bret beat Rotundo in the final yeah?or am I thinking of something else?

I had forgotten about that tourney.....Bret beat Rotundo in the final yeah?or am I thinking of something else? Sure did. Plus Savage won the KOTR Tourney in 1987, Now I know Race and Haku considered themselves King as well but Haku never actually "won" the crown. Race won it in 86 and Savage in 87. DiBiase in 88 and Tito in 89 but to me DiBiase never pinned Savage in 88 (won by count out) and Tito never beat any of the previous Kings so I kinda still Counted Savage as the King. Then once he lost/retired at WM7, the title was stripped from him and won by Hart. If that makes any sense at all haha.
