I think the backstage reason was that Ax had supposedly developed a heart problem (which he later said was BS) and Vince was looking to eventually phase him out and replace him with Crush. In reality, I think there was a dispute over who owned the Demolition gimmick and Vince wanted him out.
On screen, I think Crush was just quietly brought in and introduced by a promo. Demolition said it was to make them even more powerful and dominating.
I think this was the first time anyone saw him, although I could be wrong.

Bill Eadie (Ax) I think wasn't in the best of health either.... you knew Demolition was finished when they lost at WM7. Also the 'new' Demolition theme music when it was just Crush & Smash seems to be one of the hardest themes to find unless ripped from source.

You mean that one? I think that's pretty good quality, personally.

Well sonofabitch; I too have never been able to find that theme and then you just stroll into this thread like a pimp and there it is haha I wish Vince would have given this version of Demolition a longer run together. I always liked Crush teaming up with Smash. Obviously it wasn't as good as Ax and Smash, but they still could have been a dominant force in Tag Team wrestling if given more a of a chance

ok so heres what I know about it
Bill "Ax"eadies back was hurting pretty badly in the months after WM6 and after talking with Vinnie about it they decided to bring Adams in as Crush and turn the team heel.
Ax would then have a more managerial role and Eadie would move slowly into a road agents job.
around late 90 Vince wanted to remove Demolitions face paint and give them masks instead.Eadie objected to this and he and vince fell out about who owned the gimmick.
Eadie left and Vince decided to job out Demolition and eventually seperate them.
ownership issues arose again when Eadie started to wrestle in his Demolition gear on the indy scene as "Axis The Demolisher".
Demolitions heel turn in the summer of 90 was so confusing to me.

They wore the masks for a short time. It was a version of their masks they always wore to the ring but it was smaller and conformed to their face and had the studs. I know they wore them for the Survivor Series team interview on stage (maybe Survivor Series Showdown?) and during the event intro where all the team members are matched up against the opposing team in blocks of four and Vince announces the names, like for Survivor Series 89.
It was a sad end for such a long dominating team but thankfully they are still remembered fondly. I think a fued with LOD could have lasted a while. I never liked seeing outside wrestlers coming in and getting spotlight over WWF in house talent, like they did with Tenryu for three pay per views. At least Rumble 94 made sense having him as a mercenary. For all the talk about Vince not liking anything he didn't create her sure did give outside talent a chance on his big PPVs like some of the Royal Rumbles.
I think WM 7 could've featured some good tag team match ups: Haku and Barbarian win over Bushwhackers and they remain dominant in the storylines as they should be considering how tough they are. They also go into the Bossman/Perfect match looking great. Rockers v. Power & Glory to continue with their fued. Could've been a short match, not as short as LOD/P & G but Rockers definately get the win. Orient Express was missing. Maybe they could've wrestled Bushwhackers and left Barbarian and Haku off the card and led to speculation like Survivor Series 1994 where is IRS? when he interfered in the main event. Have Barbarian and Haku save up for the run in later.
As for Demolition v. LOD. LOD gets the win but Demolition doesn't go out losing to wrestlers who were not regular talent.

That Demolition 2nd theme is absolute pants compared to their original Pain & Destruction theme, understandably it had to be changed due to Ax been in the opening lyrics.
What was the reason for Vince wanting the face paint off the Demo's face Joker? Was it something to do with LOD & Warrior using face paint, and felt too many guys were using it?

^ That would be my guess. I think there were always dumb rumors about Demolition being "Road Warrior rip-offs" and I guess Vince was trying to create more differences between the two. Which isn't fair because Demo were there first.
Bockwinkel, nice videos man. I never saw the guys wrestle in masks like that before. Smash looks ridiculous in that match with that piece of leather flapping around on the back of his head. No wonder they were pissed.

I had no idea that Smash actually wrestled a match in that stupid ass mask. I knew about them wearing the masks for The Perfect Team interviews, but I always figured that was simply because they didn't want to have to go thru all of the work of painting their faces just to cut a promo. Smash actually wrestling in the mask against The Texas Tornado is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen; I'm just going to go ahead and pretend that never happened

Demolition was,and still is,my favorite Tag Team of all time....so,yeah,to see what Vince did to them at the end there just really upset me....
i read,on this forumi ronically enough, the Smash and Crush were originally going to win back the Tag Belts from the Hart Foundation in either late 1990 or early 1991 ,eventually leading them to a showdown with the LOD for the belts...but Vince soured on the Smash-Crush team for some reason ( the backstage politics of the Eadie situation i would guess?),making them jobbers and putting LOD against the Nasty Boys for the Tag Titles instead...
LOD were a great tag team...definitely one of the best.... but i will wager that Demolition, for the 2 1/2 years they were on top ( March 1988 - August 1990) were the hotter team, more well known team (due to the WWF ) ,and won THREE WWF Tag Titles during that time while the Road Warriors struggled to win ONE NWA World Tag Title during the same period before jumping to the WWF shortly after WM VI ....

Demolition had a theme before the one with lyrics, it sounded like the one with lyrics but wasn't as fast or hard, kind of a slow, ominous beat like the 3rd theme. The acolytes used a similar theme but I don't think it was the same. Just sounded a lot like it. I like the 1st and 3rd themes though the 2nd will always be what they are remembered for.

Was it something to do with LOD & Warrior using face paint, and felt too many guys were using it? it was to keep them distinct from LOD man.this was when Vince still had plans for Demo. 2 things contributed to Demos slide down the card.you obviously had the eadie situation which began over his promised backstage role not coming to fruition(Jake Roberts would soon expirience the same)then blossomed intot he rights issue.randy Colley(the original Smash) backed up Eadie leading to his confidence over the issue. but it was also down to LODs and Demos matched not being up to scratch.Hawk,Animal,Ax,Smash and Vince all hated their encounters supposedly.it seemed to be a clash of styles that wasnt helped by Crush and original Demo team captain Ax being basically immobile.

Ill say this again.......Demolition as faces from Nov 88 to summer 90 were second ONLY to Hogan in terms of popularity.the pops at the 89 and 90 PPvs are the proof of this.they were also getting face pops long before SS89......the fans nessecitated their turn. Demolition sprang from 2 failed attempts to sign Hawk and Animal and were damn successful.

Road Warriors pre 1990 & Demolition Nov 88 - April 90 were even par in my opinion in terms of popularity & respect. I cant understand Vince's infatuation with the Roadies, especially as Vince was well known for pushing his own creations over other peoples.
An interesting fact is Bill Eadie is 12 years older than Barry Darsow. Due to the face paint you would never have known.
