According to HHH, Shawn was getting a lot of attention from the females in the bar (some of whom had boyfriends) and it rubbed some guys the wrong way. HHH said this happened quite often but with the Clique in full force (meaning he, Nash, and Razor around as well) there was strength in numbers. That night, however, the guys were POed, possibly drunk, and jumped HBK. Personally, I don't care if they were soldiers or if Shawn was coming on to their women, beating a guy gang style is cowardly and pathetic.

However, for his part, HBK was too drunk and/or drugged to remember the incident. He says he remembers walking into the bar then waking up in the hospital. There is a lesson there kiddies: drugs and alcohol will get you into bad situations.

Yeah I remember that happening. About 20 minutes away from my house. He got wasted, lipped off and hit on the wrong women without caring. The marines (5 seems to be the common number but who knows officially) beat the hell out of him.

that's very much painting it in hbk's favor. it wasn't drugs and alcohol, it was obviously michael's bullcrapbehavior. bulldog and waltman didn't start a problem and they were reportedly much more ed off the somas than michaels was.

So there's this guy that comes into 7-11 quite a bit and we shoot the crapnow and again. Few days ago he comes in and there are some punk kids standing outside (yes, I am going somewhere with this before a mod gives up and moves the thread) and he says "God, I'd love to just hit them but I'd probably get arressted and there's a few out there". I replied with "Hit the biggest one square in the jaw, that'll knock him down. Good shot to the jaw takes anybody down". He says "You got that right, I remember being in a bar in New York awhile back when I was in the army and one of my buddies knocked out a big wrestler with just one punch to the jaw". I said "Oh shit, really? Who?" and he replied "Shawn Michaels"

Well of course I went on to ask where exactly the bar was and as I expected he said "Syracuse". Turns out this guy was there for the Syracuse incident so I started asking more questions about it. He said "Shawn Michaels, that 1-2-3 Kid guy and Davey Boy Smith came into the bar. Must have been when Shawn Michaels was World Champ or something because he had the belt with him (I didn't bother tell him it was the Intercontinental title), anyways there was about 20 of us G.I.s on weekend leave and some of us brought our girlfriends. Shawn Michaels decides to try and pick up the girlfriend of a G.I. about my size (couldn't be taller than 5ft 8 and 175lbs soaking wet) ignoring the G.I. right beside her. Well this guy gets pretty pissed but keeping composed tells Shawn that they're together and could he just leave them be. Michaels starts acting like a big shot, tells him just who he is, says he's got back up (pointing at Waltman and Davey Boy) and that he's going to take his woman back to the hotel. The G.I. gets pissed, starts yelling, Michaels pushes him and the G.I. proceeds to punch Michaels ONCE in the jaw and knock him silly. From there the guy started stomping on Michaels and kicking him in the head with steel-toed boots. 1-2-3 Kid made the bartender call the cops and then ran outside to flag them down when they got there. Davey Boy did nothing and no other G.I.s did a thing. In the end the guy got arrested, had to pay Shawn's medical bills after Shawn sued and he's also barred for like from WWF things. He didn't care about that part though because he thinks wrestling is gay."

So there ya go. One G.I. beat up Michaels for hitting on his girlfriend and being a prick. It wasn't 300 marines throwing the guy into the hoods of cars or anything. Just some steel-toed boots repeatedly into the side of his dome.

how valid that version of the story is i'm not sure, but it seems MUCH more likely than what was reported in the observer years ago.

The WWF did a house show in Binghamton, N.Y. that night, which I attended. The main event was Shawn Michaels vs. Davey Boy Smith, and the 1-2-3 Kid was also on the card, beating Bob Backlund.

It was a Friday night, and after the Binghamton show ended the wrestlers apparently hopped in their rental cars and went straight to Syracuse (roughly an hour drive from Binghamton), where the next night's shows were scheduled to take place.

According to Bret's book, it was caused by Shawn mouthing off to some marines, but obviously you'd have to take that with a pinch of salt considering Hart's attitude towards HBK when the book was written.

One other thing he says though is that Davey and Kid DIDN'T lock themselves in the van, both got out but were so whacked out that Kid was useless and was pretty much swatted to the ground.

Bret makes an interesting point that despite being drunk and pilled out of his mind, nobody could take Davey down to the ground, and he fought them off the best he could.

I don't dispute the fact that Michaels was a jerk but I simply can't believe drugs and alcohol didn't play a big role in the attack. Shawn probably didn't have the awareness to realize he was getting himself into a potentially dangerous situation.

Also, I'm guessing the guys that jumped him were probably hammered too. It made them all the more likely to prove some point about wrestling or some point about "no one messes with my girl" or some equally inane crap. It all boils down to troglodyte behavior and drugs/alcohol will always help situations get to that point.

My uncle was at the bar that night and he said pretty much what the statement above said..he got dropped by a lil guy...but he did add that once he got dropped the other GI's took some shots. this was big in the Cuse for a loooong time. WWE would not do a show in Syracuse for years.

Well, if you take the WWE involvement out of it, it reads like this:

A group of guys entered a bar, drunk and possibly drugged out of their minds, and ended up getting into a fight with some other guys who'd been drinking due to some drunken taunts and for hitting on their women.

Sounds like something that happens in every bar every Saturday night. It just became big news because Shawn Michaels happened to be the one how got his ass kicked.

I don't know man when you have a guy is who 6'8 (hall) and 7' (nash) I feel like even navy guys would not want to get in a fight with them. Navy guys are tough no doubt about it but still fighting guys as big as hall and nash would be very intimidating. Physically it would be hard for most of the soldiers to even punch them in the head where as one punch from nash would be a KO. All I know is that shawn was a dick in bars pretty much all the time around this period and the only time he even got beaten up was when hall and nash weren't there.
