Hey guys.
I was just watching a Goldust match earlier and it got me thinking about when he was in the WWE in late 1997 and early 1998 and for some reason he was known as The Artist Formely Known As Goldust. He didn't wear the gold paint or suit, and wore a variety of odd outfits and face paint.
Just wondered if anyone knew the reason for the gimmick change and if anyone has any pics?

That was a horrible time for Goldust. (Character wise.)

In late 1997, Brian Pillman and Goldust were feuding over Marlena. Pillman beat Goldust to gain Marlena's services for 30 days after Marlena's accidental interference, set to end at Badd Blood. Goldust and Marlena were set to renew their vows live on RAW the next night leading to the obvious swerve of Marlena revealing herself as wanting to be with Pillman all along and thus turning heel. As you know, Pillman died the night of Badd Blood leaving the whole storyline in jeopardy. The WWF decided to switch it and have Goldust turn heel on Marlena instead, revealing that he had fallen out of love with her and found someone else who was letting him be the real him. The woman was revealed to be Luna Vachon and Goldust became The Artist Formerly Known As Goldust, dressing up in strange outfits each week. Eventually the gimmick got tired and Goldust burned his outfit becoming Dustin Runnels, a preachy heavily religious man. After Marlena returned as Terri and started sleeping with Val Venis, Runnels said that "He" was coming back. This was revealed to be Goldust, bringing the whole thing full circle. Here's some pictures: (Remove the stars)

Ah thanks for that Cam, good little read. I remember the Dustin Runnels religious gimmick now too. All I can say is this Goldust wouldn't fit in with WWE's PG rating now.

I always liked the Goldust character and feel we were robbed of a classic at WM12 when Hall was suspended.he was supposed to regain the strap from Goldie at 12 after a solid build between the 2 but Hall was suspended. bah. on a totally unrelated note Goldust always had GREAT action figures right the way up to Mattel.

yeah,it was definitely in the PG-13 era there....
it was also a play on Prince,as well, who changed his name to that weire symbol thing only a few years before this, but everyone just called him "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince"....

Yeah Goldust was introduced in late-1995 when WWF was PG or at least family-oriented. IMO The Goldust character was the start of the Attitude Era as the WWF really pushed the envelope with him and his tactics in his Feud with Razor Ramon.
In 1996, WWF slowly started to slide away from the PG/Family-oriented market and become a little edgier, but still toned down. Austin probably being the exception. Finally in 1997, the Attitude Era was starting to fire up and the rest is history.
Thus, Goldust was the start of the Attitude Era.

Does anyone remember the short lived Warrior & Goldust feud after Warrior returned at WM against HHH?
I've got a Raw taped somewhere and Warrior is interviewed by Vince to be interupted by Goldust. Warrior says something like "whatever you screw with" and ends with a clothesline.

It was basically just to bring him in line with the attitude era. He got fat during that time too.

the gimmick started as a backup plan b/c Brian Pillman had passed away during his feud with Goldust, one where Marlena was supposed to turn heel on Goldust and fall in love with Pillman instead.
