ROYAL RUMBLE 1991
Growing up I was a fan of the WWF from 1989 but I would not say I was hooked really until 1990 and by 1991 I was obsessed. I loved everything about it had the figures the sticker book the trading cards. Back then I lived in Scotland so getting merchandise at first until the WWF blew up in the UK was hard. My mum ordered a load of stuff from the WWF magazine from the USA and got hit with a pretty nasty import tax bill.
Any way back to the point my favourite PPV of the early 90’s by far is the 1991 Royal Rumble I loved everything about this event from the cool intro to the matches before the rumble its self. I vividly remember being excited when Warrior was chasing Sherri out of the ring never in a million years did I see Savage coming out of no where and just cloths lining the hell out of my hero the Ultimate Warrior I was furious what is Macho King doing I shouted to my mum he is not aloud to do that I said like I was Jack Tunney. Even after all this there was no way the Warrior was going to lose to Sgt Slaughter or so I thought it nearly brought me to tears to see Warrior lose the belt.
This event also had great “fiiler” matches Rockers vs Orient Express still holds up today as a excellent match up I was lucky enought to see a rematch at the 91 UK rampage tour in Glasgow. Who can forget that the Virgil vs Ted Dibiase feud started right here and would last until Summerslam you sure as hell wouldn’t see anything like that these days for a mid card feud. Bossman vs Barbarian was also a good match.
As far as the actual Rumble match went I have to confess despite the time I grew up with the WWF I was never a Hulk Hogan fan it was not like I disliked him he just was never one of my favourites. The man I wanted to win the Royal Rumble was the Texas Tornado being a kid was great as back then I really though like Roddy Piper and Gorilla Monsoon were telling me that anyone could win the Royal Rumble and I really believed that Texas Tornado could do it. The actual Rumble was great and when Macho King never came out I remember hoping that the Ultimate Warrior managed to beat him up so bad that was why.
So there you have it the 1991 Royal Rumble easily in my top 5 PPVs of all time what are some you guys thoughts on this event.

One of my favourite Rumbles and the Rockers/Orient Express match is one of my favourite tag matches ever, might even be my favourite tag match without gimmicks like tables or ladders etc.

Oh yeah man, the '91 Rumble was an awesome event. I really enjoyed it. Another thing I really enjoyed was the old intros Vince used to do. Man, those were awesome. I miss those days...

The 1991 Royal Rumble match itself was great. Many entrants were in there for a good length of time making them look strong, unlike today's Rumbles. Even Shane Douglas, who was the definition of JTTS at the time, lasted 26 minutes.

Yeah, I agree. First WWF PPV I ever saw and a great show. Lots of drama and excitement in the Warrior-Slaughter match (mostly thanks to Savage and Sherri), awesome tag team opener and the Rumble itself is really cool.

I agree, it was a great show. The Rockers-Orient Express match was awesome! I agree with the poster above about the '92 Rumble as well. That is still one of my favorite shows. I feel that was the best Rumble match ever. There were so many stars in that match and Flair's performance was just magical. Also, Bobby Heenan was FANTASTIC on commentary that night. His cheering for Flair during the Rumble was classic!

One of my favourites of all time!!
My first PPV was the Survivor Series prior to this but I'd seen it on Sky One where they split it in two parts possibly over 2 weeks...
For some reason we didn't get Sky Movies in time to get the Rumble but I was so excited and into WWF at this point I remember we sat just listening to the event with the screen scrambled.
Listened in horror as the events unfolded in the Warrior vs. Slaughter match. I can't remember when I actually watched it but was shortly after (Sky Movies was in place by WM7!!).
Wasn't Honkey Tonk Man originally scheduled but was replaced by one of the Nasty Boys? And I'm pretty sure this marked the only PPV appearance of Samba Simba...?
And as someone has already said the intros used to be great (they used to play them on Superstars and Wrestling Challenge in the weeks before).
If I go stay at my parents when they are away I'll always take my Tagged Classics Royal Rumble '91 & '92 2-pack. And to think it cost me £8....quality!

Most of the early Rumbles were great. For some reason around '94 they really lost a luster. The undercards werent strong, it was like they didnt want to put on a big event to outshine the upcoming Wrestlemania PPV. Royal Rumbles 1989-1992 rank as some of the best WWF PPVs of all time (IMO)

(88 wasnt bad but it was still an experiment) I liked the first part of the 1993 Rumble with Perfect and Flair battling it out leading to there brief feud and loser leaves town match. But as a whole 1993- 98 were a little weak for the most part. Maybe I/we are biased because I grew up a big fan as a kid late 80s/early 90s and then by mid 90s lost interest until late 90s. Not sure I agree they were holding back at Royal Rumble for Wrestlemania because Wrestlemania IX through 13 werent exactly the greatest WMs (WM X as an exception)

I believe it was the 96 Rumble wasnt terrible but it may have just been that transition period between "new generation" and "attitude era"
