More recent but Batista's face turn in 2005 was superbly done as a slow burner.
Diesel in 1995 after SS title loss against Bret is a personal fave, I'M BACK!
HBK on the Barber shop was great (Heenan: "Oh I knew he was gonna do that" always memorable.
Sid Justice leaving Hogan on SNME, was another didn't see coming

Sid Justice leaving Hogan on SNME, was another didn't see coming This is a good one because it changed the course of WWE. The stories vary but Sid was either upset that he was asked to turn heel or that he was upset that he couldn't go over in his first WM match. He was being positioned as Hogan's successor but the friction between he and Vince led to him leaving shortly after WM.

This is from the dying days of WCW, but how about "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan turning heel, denouncing the fans, and abandoning the "USA" schtick to join Team Canada? AND shaving his beard off?

Another shocking one even if it is well known is The Rock at Survivors 98. I like the way they built up Rock for 2 months after Summerslam with a mini face push, while also making us believe Foley was to be Vince's chosen one for SS. Double swerve really, but it was great cos Rock was 2nd to only Austin at this time for babyface cheers and to turn him heel was brave on Vince's part.
Wish they would do it for Superman Cena nowadays

-- I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Road Warriors turning on Dusty Rhodes.
I was also shocked when Andre showed up w/ Heenan, on Piper's Pit, to challenge his best friend Hogan, for the title. Not really a a sudden turn, but a heel turn none the less.

The Road Warrior turn was classic and unexpected. However, you are right. It made them even more popular (although more feared too) thus the turn didn't last past the Rhodes/Sting stuff really. I was 8 years old when Andre turned heel. And boy did that stick with me. The reason I didn't mention that in my original post is because I consider that to be one of the most famous (and talked about in older circles) turns ever.

I was surprised when Paul Orndorff turned on Hogan. He was one of my favorites and I did not want him to be a heel.

British Bulldog turning on Diesel in 1995. That's what I was gonna say. It blew my mind.

I'd have to say HBK's turn in Summer 2005. This one was very surprising and I didn't expect hbk to portray that character again.

i'd LIKE to say HBK turning in 2005,but considering it was such a short-lived thing, and was basically only done to appease Hogan, who demanded a traditional "Face vs Heel" feud rather than a "2 Legends" type of match,i genrally don't consider it a "full" turn since HBK turned right back again after the match and Hogan left...
my pics:
1-2-3 Kid turning against Razor Ramon...after Hall and Waltman had been a pair and friends for quite a few years,BAM! he turns and joins the Corporation...
Diesel turning right after losing the title to Bret Hart was a good one too ..."MOTHERF**KER!!!" always gets a LOL! from me...
The Giant, after getting robbed of the WCW World Title at Hog Wild 1996 and beaten down by the nWo,only to join them a few weeks later surprised me...
Bubba Ray Dudley embracing D-Von Dudley's evil ways and turning heel in ECW shocked me too..." MY NAME IS...." wait for the stutter "BUBBA RAY DUDLEY!" .....no stutter, and no joking, happy, playful and simple-minded Bubba Ray anymore...

Maybe it was because I was 9 years old at the time, but I thought Tatanka's heel turn on Lex Luger at SummerSlam was a surprise I was 7 and it seriously ruined my entire summer.

How about Chavo costing Rey Mysterio his first World Heavyweight Championship?
