I completely forot that WWF was pushing Hogan vs Flair as the main event for WM8 until Sid went heel.
I was just watching the SNME where Sid goes heel and the Hogan vs Flair match at WM8 is getting serious talking up by commentary.
I was shocked because as I say I totally forgot about Hogan foregoing the title match for a shot at Sid.

Still pisses me off to this day that the match didnt happen. There is 3 things that are rumored as to why it didnt happen...
1)(and the most common) Sid had in his contract that he would Main Event Hogan at a Wrestlemania. With Hogan leaving after WM8, Sid decided to force that issue with McMahon and make the match.
2)Flair and Hogan did a series of matches in large arenas (MSG, Boston Garden etc) and they didnt draw well.
3) Neither Flair nor Hogan could come to an agreement on the finish. I believe Hogan wanted to go over to not tarnish any legacy as he was planning on leaving. Yet Flair thought he deserved to go over seeing as how WWF were pushing him to be the main guy.

Holy crap dude! How did you forget about that?!? That was a pretty big deal and has been long debated on why it happened and whether it should have.
I remember being very confused as to why they changed it as Hogan vs Flair seemed like the obvious main event but I have heard the same rumors that G2 posted except for the one about Sid.

Sid envoked this so called clause to main event with Hogan, ruining the marquee Hogan vs Flair main event (I know the house matches didn't draw well, but c'mon it was Mr. WWF vs Mr. NWA) only to be released 6 weeks later. Sid also cocked up half the booking for WM8 as it was meant to be Savage vs Jake (Loser leaves WWF) & Undertaker (Heel) vs Sid (Face) Well in Sidney! :-(

The match should have happened and Flair should have went over.

Although the Savage vs. Roberts feud was white hot, so it might have been nice to blow it off the right way at a WrestleMania. Oh well.

I wonder if Sid hadn't demanded to ME WM8, then he would have fought Undertaker as a face, probably going over too, killing the streak before it even started.

I read Taker was in line for a face turn too because of the cheers, but the Survivors was in Nov, and it wasn't til February that they turned him that was a long time in McMahonland in the earlier 90's, perhaps the turn was scheduled after the original WM8 plan was done & dusted?

Hogan vs. Flair at WrestleMania NEEDED to have happened. Of any dream matches to occur at WrestleMania, this was essential, even more so than Hogan vs. Austin.

flair's title run in the wwf is an odd thing. i'm happy with his match with savage, but obviously facing off against hogan would've been iconic for the time.

This is quite possibly the biggest travesty in Professional Wrestling booking history. Hogan vs. Flair would have been the wrestling main event of the century. I'll probably go to my grave still pissed this didn't happen. Savage vs. Roberts in a loser leaves WWF match would have also been epic. AND, Taker vs. Sid Justice would have been sweet as well. WWF and Vince really screwed the ing pooch on this one

If I remember correctly, Hogan also pushed for the match with Sid, saying it would be big money or some such thing. Of course, he might have also pushed for that one so he wouldn't have to lose to Flair.

Not one of us worked for Vince McMahon at the time so none of us know exactly what happened. Just a bunch of guesses. I doubt anyone here knows the real reason.
