man its so weird to hear him announcing Summerslam 89 and Royal Rumble 1990........just cant get used to it.
for me TS was always the voice of WCW with his relentless schilling of the product.it also amused me to hear Bobby Heenan express how he despised the "Ultimate Politician" and how Sciavone would hide finishes and swerves on he and Mike Tenay and not keep them in the picture.
anyhoo thoughts on Tony Jabroni as some call him ;D

I totally agree with you Joker. I remember when I rented RR 90 for the first time and saw him annoucing (this was after all the years I grew up watching him call WCW matches). I thought for some reason he traded on WCW back in the day or something haha, but I would later find out his WWF stint was short. Thats funny about him hiding things from Tenay & Hennan I never heard that.

All opinions of Schiavone aside, I liked his voice and as said above, was the voice of WCW during the Monday Night Wars.

Taking nothing away from JR, but Tony was the voice of WCW for many many many years. As far as I know he wasnt as bad in his early days as he was during the Nitro era with his politics but Tony was always a top 5 announcer in my book

I really liked him for a long time, but by 97 or so he just wasn't into it anymore... And boy did it show.

Next to David Crockett, Schiavone was amazing... lol. The main problem I had with Schiavone's Nitro-era commentating was the incessant referencing of every little angle or appearance as if it were the greatest thing to ever happen in pro wrestling. You can only play that card so often before people start tuning it out and assuming it's just talk. I thought he was fine in the WWF for the short time he was there.

Tonys announcing skills have always been underrated in my book. As mentioned above he IS a top 5 of all time commentator. As far as his now legendary reputation out of the ring that's a different story. To stay totally on topic though,I remember watching WWF in 89 and thinking that it was wierd that he was there, but did a good job paired with Ventura. His arrival was around the time of the mass exodus of WCW/NWA big names going to Vince. Dusty,Arn Anderson,Tully,Windham,Warlord,Barbarian,Schiavone et al. I remember thinking In my 11 year old brain, “Did WWF get a bulk deal for NWA guys?”.

Oh lord, David Crockett may be the biggest mark of all time lol. He was always just so over the top. Tony had great work with Larry and Heenan on Nitro though. I think those 2 lifted him up a lot.

Vince apparantly thought so much of him that he didn´t ask him to return for 2001....
To me he was always at the bottom of the list as far as commentators go.

When he commentated in the late Eighties (Wrestling Challenge; Hogan VS Savage for example) he was just background noise really, didn't add any verve or personality, save for '...and the Macho Man goes down!'
His WCW stuff was hit and miss, like others have said, but mostly miss.

One main issue that plauged Tony Schiavone was that he didn't fit that mold of a WWF Commentator. Schiavone's voice and style was something that most WWF fans from that era were used to. Most were familiar with Monsoon/Ventura & McMahon & Ventura's style and diction. When Tony Schiavone went back to WCW, he brought that WWF sytle into his commentary which stuck with him until WCW's demise in 2001.
As for Tony Schiavone in general, I feel he is one of the worse that wrestling has ever seen. He is there with the likes of Rob Bartlett and Mark Madden.

That and Tony has said he didnt want to continue in wrestling. Hints why he didnt take the TNA job either. He wanted to settle in and be close to home. He had I believe 2 young boys that were playing baseball and wanted to spend time with them while doing radio broadcasts for home games of the local minor league team.

Id say Tony is financially set to be honest

He did one thing around 01. Im not sure what company it was but it wasnt anything big and was limited. He was an announcer along side Jerry Lawler. Outside of that from what Ive heard him say, he's been pretty set. You gotta think he worked for the same company from early 80s to 2001 (minus his year in WWF). I say he was pretty much happy with calling it a career

I really liked him at Summerslam 89. Especially his commentary in the Ultimate Warrior vs Rick Rude IC match. He was so excited it brought the whole match up a notch for me.
