Why was everyone so excited when Benoit won the World title at WM XX, acting like he finally reached the top and got a World title reign after deserving it his whole career when in fact he won the World title in WCW.
Does nobody know he won the title in WCW? Granted he won it and vacated it a day later, but he did in fact win the World title.

I think I read that in the book: Beniot: The Tradegedy That Killed a Family and Crippled a Sport. Great book BTW. I had always thought he held the belt in 1997 or 1998 but didnt think too much of it.

I thought he won it about the time he wrestled Bret in St. Louis? I just forgot the year that they worked in. Dont remember the dying years of WCW too well.

To be fair, the WCW World Title lost all credibility after David Arquette and Vince Russo won it. I'm honestly surprised David Flair never held it.

Well it's the fact that he dropped it a day later so he never really got a decent hold at it plus more than a few never knew he was world champion in WCW. All of his fans were estatic he won it; winning it at WrestleMania was the ultimate bonus, top that off with Eddie joining him with the WWE Title in the ring and you have one of the best moments/endings of WrestleMania let alone a PPV. It's a damn shame he went and did what he did and it'll have that stigma to it. But that last line is irrelevant to your topic. But knowing WF someone's gonna throw in the perverbial morals and ethics rant and cause a s***storm.

damn, I apoligize for my timeline being wrong. I forgot it was after OTE 99 that he worked Bret and it was a few months after that he won the belt right?

What happened was Bret won the title and then vacated it and then it was Sid vs Benoit for the title at some PPV and Benoit won the title, the next day he vacated it and then Sid won the title after that.

in 2002-2006 that was extremely rare

Benoit basically said that the title and that part of his career (the last 2 years of WCW) were a complete joke. They had taken guys that had busted their asses for years and years and made complete jokes out of them. Guys like Benoit, Malenko, Jericho, Guerrero were by far the best pound for pound athletes in WCW but were constantly being held down and pushed to the bottom by the "powers that be". Benoit himself said he didnt even recognize himself as a WCW champion as they just put the title on him thinking it would convince him (and the others) to stay.
I always got a kick how in 00 and 01 WCW wanted to "push the younger stars that were held down" and then they shoved Mark Jindrak, Sean O'Hare, Chuck Palumbo and Billy Kidman down our throats. Knowing good and well none of them could draw flies if they were covered in horse crap. All the time the guys they let go, Benoit, Jericho, Guerrero, Malenko, Saturn, were all being big draws in the WWF at the time and making a name for themselves at WCWs expense.

I always think it was ironic that at the time, the memorable ending of WMXX with Eddy & Benoit celebrating as World champions was championed as the start of the next 20 years of WrestleMania, yet within 4 years both were dead. :-(

Didn't Kane have a one day reign as well? He's kinda in the same boat. On a side note, while looking through the list of WCW champions, I noticed the title was vacated a lot haha.

Most of the vacancies were understood and I enjoyed them like the Flair-Steamboat one or having the Winner of WW3 become the champ. I liked those but just sayin. Hi my name is Jim, I just got hired to Turner and Im gonna strip you of the world title" just annoyed the outta me

by the time benoit won the title the boat had sunk there and they did it as a means to attempt to keep him...it didn't work, he'd been pissed at wcw officials for years.

i suppose as well that wrestlemania is seen as the ultimate ppv event by some. and to win it it at the twentieth "superbowl of wrestling" had some significance to its prestige.
on a side note it's good to see a discussion concerning benoit, without it turning into a major argument! just recognising classic wrestling for what it is!

By the time WCW realized that it was too late. The boat was already sinking with no way back to the surface. I remember that time period fondly as well.
