prior to TNA, did Sting ever appear without facepaint?
I'm talking about in character, on a wrestling show, excluding documentaries etc.

Yup. Off the top of my head I know he did on Nitro the night after he won the belt at Halloween Havoc 99 and JJ Dillon stripped him of it.

There was a week-long stint where offices stripped him of his theme music and stuff, so he wrestled some nobody wearing street clothes (if you consider a trenchcoat "street clothes") and shades, but that could be the same instance Jimmy is referring to.

Almost every time Ive seen Sting without paint, hes had sunglasses on. Even during his surfer sting days.

Damn Sting looks so young in that video. He still looks good for a guy who is 51, considering how long he has been in the wrestling business

WCW Surfer Sting with the bleach blonde hair will forever be my favorite character of Sting. When did he switch from the blonde hair to the longer hair of his natural color. It seemed like one day it was changed but I don't remember a specific date? I was able to narrow it down from when he fought at Starrcade 95 blonde tips and when he appears on Nitro 1/22/96 with a more crew cut all brown hair look. I guess he just transitioned from the blonde.

He hair got longer and as it got longer he stopped bleaching it thus going back to his natural darker color.

Didn't he appear without paint during the fued with Luger? After Luger took him out with the bat, I'd say Uncensored 2000 at a guess but maybe Slamboree, only a promo though, the actual match he wore the paint.
