I know that the used the mesh cage before they came along with the frame-bar cage, but when did the framed cage debut? I predict it was when Paul Orndorff fought Hulk Hogan on SNME, but it may of been before that.

Im pretty sure it debuted at Wrestlemania 2....Thats the earliest I remember it being shown. I know the idea behind the bars was that it gives the fans a better view of the action plus roiders like Hogan and fat asses like Bundy could actually climb the cage unlike the steel mesh ones

I would really like to see another frame bar cage match. I agree, the bar cage seems more brutal.

I would really like to see another frame bar cage match. I agree, the bar cage seems more brutal. Appearently there were. I've read in a lot of biographies that hitting a mesh cage is like hitting a chainlink fence, doesn't really hurt. The bars, however. don't move and hurt like hell. I'd love to see another one. I wish they hadn't stopped using it.

As G-Money pointed out, the Hogan-Bundy cage match at WM2 came before the Hogan-Orndorff SNME cage match. There may have been a non-televised test run of the frame cage (which will always be "The Playpen" to me) but WM2 was the first national appearance, I think. I can understand the multiple reasons behind the playpen but I still hate it. I'll always favor the mesh cage even though wrestlers with big feet still complain that it's hard to get their feet into it.

Whatever happenned to it? Bret and Yokozuna had a match in one like it, I think. I can't remember it being used past the mid-90s.

I remember it being used on a Raw in the later 90's. It was all black and Undertaker or Kane set it on Fire I think. I remember Austin being involved.

They used a hybrid right here the new cage and part of the classic blue cage like poster above said it was used a couple of times in the late 90's.The last time probably was St. Valentine's Day Massacre although It was kinda a hyrid of the old cage and new cage

I forgot about that hybrid at Breakdown, I thought it was pretty cool.
I remember hearing that E&C had a cage match with I think the Hardy Boyz in 2000 using a black framed cage.

I loved the black cage. The blue one wasn't intimidating at all, but tha black one was BA.

The last one was at Rebellion 1999 when Rock took on Triple H
But before that the mesh one was the regular, the last time it was used as the regular was the Raw, May 15, Big Bossman Vs. Mideon, when Taker went to McMahons house

As others have said, WrestleMania 2 in 1986 was the first appearance of that style cage in the WWF (first televised appearance, anyway). They even pointed out during the WM2 broadcast that they were using this special "reinforced" steel cage or something like that, due to Bundy's size.
I can't confirm this myself since I haven't seen a ton of early Stampede, but I have also heard people refer to the frame cage as a "Calgary style cage" because that style was used in Stampede in Calgary before the WWF started using it. Again, I can't confirm it because I haven't seen much Stampede, but that's what I've read.
EDIT: Actually, I think that WM2 cage may have belonged to the Harts, because I seem to recall that the Hart family was brought in to help put the cage together at WM2... did I read that in Bret's book? Someone help me out...

I think it was last used on TV show at Rebellion 01 between Edge and Christian. But it was still used at house shows during the Angle/Edge feud in 2002. Might have been used after too.
