As far as I've heard, Luger was never scheduled to win the WWF title at WMX; the plan was always to have him lose and Bret walk out as champion. The whole spilling the beans the night prior at a bar isn't true either, from what I've read over the years. Luger simply wasn't a draw and the fans took to liking Bret more. I thought this as well. It sounds like a stupid wrestling urban legend. The storylines leading into the show, and the layout of WrestleMania perfectly led to Bret vs Owen for the title over the summer, whereas there was no similar sort of story in place for Lex. So as someone stated in the thread, if Lex had beaten Yoko, he'd have lost it to Bret the same night. Perhaps he'd have been the number one contender at King of the Ring that year instead of Diesel. I remember feeling really let down by the ending of SummerSlam 93. I didn't understand why all the babyfaces put Lex on their shoulders and celebrated like he'd won the title.

Lex Luger as the Amercian gimmick failed in a huge way. I mean Vince Mcmahon thought anyone could just be the next Hulk Hogan. He was about to find out that can not happen. If Lex did get the world title he would have been such a awful world champion.

The only time I ever cared about Luger was (funnily enough) when he beat Hulk Hogan on a Nitro to win the WCW World title.

Luger could have and would have never touched Hogan...One simple word why... Charisma! Lex Luger could never be a Hulk Hogan. How would a Lex Luger WWE world title run ended up? Really bad.

Does anyone feel Lex Luger should have been at the level of a Hogan at some stage?

If Lex Luger hadn't ed up and told a reporter about his win the next night at WrestleMania X, or done anything funny like steroids or drugs or anything... Do you think he would of been a decent replacement? He had some decent brawling skill back here, to be honest. It showed best at King of the Ring 1993 against Tatanka. I don't think there were any plans for Luger to win the belt at WM 10. He was, for a brief time, scheduled to defeat Yokozuna at SS '93 but the title switch was called off. The one thing Luger lacked was the connection with the fans that Hogan had. I don't know whether it was lack of charisma or indifference but he always seemed to be going through the motions in the WWF. That was a shame because early in his career, he seemed like he could be something very special. Also, the ending of SS that year was a huge faux pas for the WWF. Watching wrestlers pour into the ring and hoist Luger to their shoulders after a count-out had to be humiliating for him and feel weird to those helping him. The fans in attendance didn't buy it at all.

I would buy the idea of Luger winning at Mania 10 after "overcoming all odds" if they hadnt had that ridiculous celebration at SummerSlam 93.
Luger should have gotten the belt at SS. If I could rebook that time span, I would have had Luger win at SS, Bret wins the Rumble, beats Luger at Mania, which leads to a Luger heel turn (he was being booed anyway. He could have done the "the fans turned on me" bit)

If Lex Luger ever got the WWE championshiip I feel he would have lost the belt and would not have a very long run because I feel wrestling fans would not buy into him as a world champion.

I think WWF ahd their chance with Luger at Summerslam 93.the fact he didnt get the belt then wasnt a good sign........ but yeah he effed up big time spilling the beans to that reporter. Bret was supposed to beat Owen then get canned by Yoko after Owen interfered leaving Luger to dethrone him. worked out better the way it went down though Yeah. When Luger failed to capture the belt then, which was the absolute HEIGHT of his WWF run, he wasnt going to.

Vince tried building him up all thru late 93 and into 94 but that didnt really work either......as stated the fans bought into Bret more. but Im fairly sure the original plan before Royal Rumble was for a Luger victory.fan indifference after his "win"with Bret swang it away from him.......I think thats more likely than him spilling to a reporter
