This has been listed before, I definatley wouldn't spend 10 grand. Even though it's a nice piece in a Wrestling collection.

Its a nice belt. I like it and it would definitely be the center piece of a wrestling collection.
If I had 10,000 to spend, then I'd consider spending it on that belt. However, I don't.
Still a great piece though.
You're not really buying the belt as such. Purchasing it more for the history of it.

I'd actually be surprised if someone within the wrestling business doesn't end up buying this. They stand the best chance of having both the appreciation for the belt's history and also the money to afford a collectible of this value.
Jim Cornette in particular is noted to be a major collector of pro wrestling memorabilia, although I'm not sure if he's got the dough for this kind of thing.
EDIT: You know, just because Curt Hennig himself destroyed it in a symbolic F-U to Hulk Hogan, I think this belt would be right at home in Ric Flair's trophy case, if he were so inclined to buy it.

Yes, Jim Cornette is a very big collector of memorabilia and belts. He is also probably one of the nicest people in the industry I have ever met.
If I were to guess, I would think someone from Japan would buy it. When I sell ring used belts, I get alot of demand from over seas. I have sold belts to people in Great Britian, Ireland, Norway but I get TONS of inquiries from Japan. They tend to have more disposable income for something like this, and they are die hard WWF fans.

It not really something that i'd personally value much. Its a belt that was broken in 1989 during a wrestling angle. Realistically at the end of the day it is JUST a prop when it comes down to it is worth $10,000.00? I dont think so.

Out of curiosity, what other used belts do you have/had? From what superstars? Are there any interesting stories on how you acquired them?

I can't name most of them because wrestlers don't want it getting out who sold what. No real interesting stories. Basically you know people who either buy them from wrestlers, or you approach a wrestler and make an offer on them. Belts are really not loved or respected by most old school wrestlers. They are nothing but props to them, so if someone offers them a few thousand for a belt, they will likely take it.

Here's a somewhat-related question that's bugging me: Since this belt came from the estate of Mel Phillips, I assume that means Mel Phillips is no longer with us. How and when did he die? I have been following wrestling closely for decades and have never heard of his passing until this belt popped up. Not that it surprises me... he was basically ostracized from wrestling when the scandal broke, and probably wished to keep a low profile from then on.

Well Mel isn't dead. I heard he was working in a Circuit City or a shoe store in Massachusetts. He sold all of his wrestling items through a 3rd party company who labeled it as an estate sale. I thought he died too, but after digging around some, I finally got a confirmation he was living.

Just to be clear: If anyone is still doubting this then you're an idiot. I know the seller and it is 100% legit.

The belt is 100% authentic. I think the auction and the fact both Reggie Parks and Dave Millican confirmed its authenticity should be enough. This is the condition I received the belt from Mel in. I have numerous other belts including ring used, it just so happened that when I got this belt from Mel, the snaps were already rusted. I have sold and seen other ring used belts sell for 2-3x my asking price. It isn't for everyone. There are only a handful of people who fully understand the value and historic value of this belt. If it does not sell, I have no problems continuing to keep it. If anyone still doubts it's authenticity, I really don't know what else to tell you. I will answer whatever questions you have though. +4 Karma
