Tweets from Sean Ross Sapp, Tony Khan via @aew, and Cody himself. He is no longer with AEW and did not sign a non-compete clause on the way out. Sean Ross Sapp states he could be "leaving AEW and joining WWE."
What a weird world.

Tbh Iβve never watched a full AEW show. I mainly follow/watch matches through social media and a rare occasion on YouTube. Still I find this kind of crazy that Cody would leave. I know AEW hardcore fans seemed to hate him for whatever reason. I thought he did some great stuff with AEW I canβt see how someone would want to go to WWE with the way they run their programs.

Could also be a work...didnβt Kahn just recently say we canβt resign every body

Could also be a work...didnβt Kahn just recently say we canβt resign every body This is way too convoluted to be anything except real. The heartfelt goodbyes and the legitimate media coverage this is getting. This would blow up in their face and get fans groaning and rolling their eyes if it ended in a Cody promo on Dynamite -- and they know wrestling well enough to know that. Don't overthink it.

I would have been π― convinced this was a weird ass work, except the ppv is in less than 3 weeks, and they're leaving a Paige Van Zant match with Brandi behind cuz there's no time to run this angle and get to that match.
I guess he's moving on from wrestling. Can't go back to WWE with all his TBS/tnt commitments, otherwise that would be the likely answer. Unless he's leaving those too but that would be really weird given his goals outside of wrestling.
π€·ββοΈπ€·ββοΈ Very confused, gonna miss watching them in aew, but hope they're happy with whatever they're deciding.

Just a bizarre move. Was his relationship backstage that bad with the other EVP's? It's not a rudderless situation but a visibility one. Largely being the face of AEW on a share of Turner programming with "Go Big Show" and his own reality show. AEW has their fair share of top-tier talent now, and Rhodes was pretty darn near part-timer status. Guess the stip about never challenging for the World Championship makes more sense now.
I know people talked about him being a RR entrant last month with his "free agent" status, but that was a joke dammit!

Cody is a true cornerstone of AEW and he's a major part of their success. I have no doubt that his behind the scene work was more instrumental then most of us will ever know.

Maybe he did great things behind the scenes but watching him on the show was nearly unbearable. Same with Brandi.

Cody was very hit or miss for me. I liked him in the beginning, but started to turn on him when he beat Anthony Agogo at Double or Nothing 2021. I was extremely intrigued with where his "Will he turn?" story was going. I want to say this might be a work, but you never know. I could see extreme fan backlash from doing this.
I actually saw his last match in AEW, that being the TNT Unification Ladder Match with Sammy Guevara. Kinda makes that moment more special for me now.

didnβt see this coming. I really wanted a Punk/Cody feud and felt like they still had a lotta room to explore of the pandering baby face gone wrong character.
considering Codyβs left wrestling and came back like 10 times already in AEW, Iβll wait and see how this one develops.

Surprising but he just had a kid and been teasing retirement. Maybe he just needs to get away from wrestling for awhile. I bet he comes backβ¦eventually.

If this is true that sucks. As I said in the past Cody along with Pac and Jericho were the reason I turned on that first Dynamite episode. I still enjoy his work very much. And honestly if he really doesnβt get resigned itβs a major mistake by TK. The company is still way to young at three years to let Codyβs passion and knowledge for the business go.

Regardless of how I feel about Cody and his character in AEW, this is ing huge. He's definitely one of their top stars and him especially would be someone I thought would stay to continue through the development of AEW considering his reality show and how much he permeates through the programming. If he goes to WWE that would be an insane move and a huge loss for AEW (even if I think every program he's been in for the past year or so has been awful).

That is something I didn't see coming. He needs to just do indies and raise his kid, do his tv shows, and rest. I doubt WWE is going to be kind to him if he returns....
If it is true big money is what he wanted, just pay him to be a behind the scenes guy. He would be worth it there, for sure.

See ya soon Stardust.
Seriously though, AEW has moved on from Cody for a while now. Guy was a big fish until they actually started to expand the pond and fill it with bigger fish. If he does go back to Vince, Iβd be interested to see if he could make it in the main event.
