WFWF.COM: MAJOR announcement regarding weapons in matches

The following is an MAJOR announcement from Lila Sleater with the full backing of the Board of Directors:

Anybody who watched SuperBrawl X noticed a disturbing trend: the use of lethal weapons. Ryan "Needles" Payne tried to stab Billy Broom with a knife. Anna Ahriman hacked away at Mesh with a sword. The goal in a WFWF match is to beat your opponent. It is NOT to kill them. Dead wrestlers don't come back for more matches at later shows. The use of knives and swords goes against this principle.

We understand that weapons will be involved in hardcore matches. The use of foreign objects is not something new to the WFWF or professional wrestling in general but there is a line. The use of potentially lethal bladed weapons crosses the line from professional wrestling into murder porn.

Following the events at SuperBrawl, the WFWF can not and will not condone the use of bladed weapons in any match, no matter the match stipulation or willingness of participants to actively try to kill each other. From this moment on, any wrestler who attempts to use a bladed weapon like a knife or a sword in a match will face immediate disciplinary action including fines, suspension, or firing.

It shouldn't need stating that other lethal weapons are equally banned so keep your fantasies about bringing a gun to the ring to yourself.

As always, whatever weapons you can find laying around the ring are acceptable in stipulation matches, including but not limited to chairs, tables, ladders, and blunt weapons. We'll even allow thumb tacks and barbwire. Hopefully that is enough toys to satisfy your bloodlust without getting the WFWF banned from all forms of media.

FYI - This is not a storyline. This is a new policy discussed and agreed upon by the owners. Please take note and adjust your future match writing accordingly.

I'm somewhat proud that the evolution of the outlaw ish I inspired has resulted in official jurisdiction.

Truthfully, and this goes against the grain of what I did on the surface, but there's a psychology to anything and a right way to do things. Things like knives and swords can be used, but they have to be used with an intelligence. it's more about the tease than the actual act of stabbing/cutting. I don't think in the two years that I had Schneider carrying a sword, that I actually used it at all. I had Schneider pointing a gun a lot in roleplays, but never actually firing it.

There's a line of believability to follow when pushing excess and the key to believability and good story telling is to walk the line rather than jumping over it. Especially in match writing, there's only so much plausible damage that someone can take before they're left for dead. I know this may sound like pot calling the kettle black from The King of Gore, but I understand deathmatch wrestling better than some of the people who actually do it, and almost never ventured outside of the lines of what's reality, while pushing the bounds of WFWF's reality.

if you're gonna do this sort of stuff, do it right

This man gets it.

We're trying to bring the WFWF back to a more traditional wrestling where the worst that can happen is getting choked out by barbwire or smacked with a baseball bat (even though I'd like to see the head shots reeled in a bit too - Trace Demon and Mesh are enough severe head traumas for my liking).  Match writing should tell a good story but all participants should still be able to wrestle another day after its over.

The exception is if a character is being retired but would it kill people to have a them simply come out and say "I'm done.  Thanks for the memories."  Walking off into the sunset can be just as powerful as an ambulance ride into the sunset and in the WFWF it would be a welcome change of pace.

As someone whose most revered/reviled creation had a light habit of smashing glass containers over the heads of others...this is a good rule.

Imitation is absolutely the most sincere form of flattery. I'll cop since day one to trying to place myself anywhere near the realms of Kyzer or Drakz in writing David Brennan the way I did, but I'll give myself enough credit to suggest that, in doing so, I made it my own and grounded it within the narrative without going over the top for the sake of going over the top.

The more slice 'n' dice this place gets, the more it begins to read like a bunch of K-Mart brand Schneider matches - and I say that as someone who never particularly cared for the in-ring material Schneider wrote. I also have a tendency to neither care for nor agree most of what Schneider, the writer (that rhymes), has to say regarding the general ebb and flow of things, but he's absolutely right in his assessment here.

The WFWF is pretty, pretty unrestricted, which is saying a lot given the forum it's hosted on. Writers are typically given carte blanche to go nuts with whatever creativity they can muster, but as someone who has actively written creatively in some form or another (beyond the boxed in scope of specifically e-feds) for close to 25 years, parameters can absolutely be a factor in making one a better writer. I don't see anything in this policy barring the aforementioned characters from maintaining their fascination with instruments of a bladed variety in an RP setting (where most of that sh*t is best developed anyway) - only that it be dialed in to a predisposed set of rules come national TV showtime (which would 1000% exist in the realm of reality anyway).

If that's a factor in anyone feeling like they're being hindered creatively, I'd suggest looking inward, rather than outward, for a solution.

As someone that's written two pretty gruesome hardcore matches in my time here, I can say that everything Prophet of Ash said is 100% true.

I'm not a fan of deathmatch wrestling myself but I appreciate the psychology that those matches have at times. "Sick" Nick Mondo didn't take a weedwhacker to the stomach because he's a no talented garbage wrestler. Taking crazy ass risks was part of his character because no matter what anyone put his body through, he still fought back and never quit. That's why he's seen as a legend of deathmatch wrestling. I dunno, that's just me.

The matches I wrote were violent and gruesome just for gruesome sake. Hell - I even messaged Prophet of Ash one time about the most violent, over-the-top spot that's ever happened in the WFWF because I wanted to top it so I'm glad that this rule is being implemented because it forces writers to get creative.

You can still bring all of Needles' gimmicks for his entrance, he just can't use them in a match or anything.
