Interesting article. Hope this comes to pass and can be transferred to files. Would really bring the world of 3D printing a lot closer to the "dream" status.

3D printing has always interested me. It would be a dream come true if you could easily scan faces and the 3D printer prints them perfectly.

I suspect hat some of the LJN 'protoypes' out there are 3D printed. No proof, just a hunch.

Most 3D scanned 3D prints are just plain ugly. I own a PP3DP Up! Mini 3D printer: it's fun to make (simple) toys, keyfobs, ... Yes, it is possible to print out pieces to print a figure in DA-style and it has been done (file is available), but it takes a lot of time and filament (material); so not really worth it. Mostly they'll just print stickfigures with multiple points of articulation: Modio.

I was thinking of getting a printer and creating super hero statues as gifts for friends.

It's possible, the detail depends on the 3D Printer's layer thickness as well as how big your statue would be. My printer has following build size: 4.7” x 4.7” x 4.7”

3D printing heads is a prospect that really intrigues me. Though I'm not sure the detail level is good enough yet, certainly not with home printers anyway. Plus obviously there is also the challenge of finding modellers who are good enough to get close-to-realscan level likenesses.
