Just my opinion, of course. But I don't see the big deal about this guy at all.
On the mic, I think he's atrocious. Every promo he's cut over the past year since The Shield broke up has been nearly exactly the same (he must get that from Triple H) and his promos never have any sort of direction or point to them. If you've heard one Seth Rollins promo since last June, you've heard them all. On top of all of that, he just has an extremely irritating voice. I know it works since he's a heel, but every time the guy talks it's like nails on a chalkboard. I don't know how they saw this guy cut any promo and deemed that he was ready for the main event.
In the ring, I think he's very good, but not great. He's had very good matches in the WWE (I don't count NXT because he doesn't have nearly that much freedom in terms of how he can work once they get promoted to the main roster, although that's not his fault) against Dean Ambrose, Randy Orton and...who, exactly? His Triple Threat Match against Lesnar and Cena was awesome, and probably the best match I've ever seen him have, personally, but that's about it. You look at guys like Randy Orton, Dean Ambrose and Daniel Bryan and those guys are capable of carrying a solid match with anybody. I don't feel like Rollins is on that same level. I mean, it doesn't help that he's booked in some slight variation of nearly the same match with the same opponents every week, but still. Every match is the same with J&J getting and/or Kane and/or Big Show getting involved to help him win. Again, not his fault that the booking these days is an absolute joke, but even throughout the course of his normal matches it's all pretty much the same stuff. You look at the way even a guy like Roman Reigns has evolved over the past six months. When you compare a match he had six months ago to some of his more recent matches, the difference is unreal. The guy has gotten so much better and natural in the ring and is finally learning how to work a 15-20 minute match.
I also don't think Rollins can sell for his life. Brock Lesnar was throwing him around like a rag doll last week on RAW and he got up after about two seconds without favoring his neck/back even the slightest. Compare that to the way Ambrose sells, and it isn't even close. I know Ziggler oversells a lot to the point where it becomes cartoony, but I'd even rather have that than a guy who acts like nothing happened after he gets Suplexed on the back of his head five times.
And finally, and most importantly, I just look at Rollins and definitely do not see a major WWE Superstar. You look at some of the top heels of the past generations and they all had something that set them apart from someone else and made them stand out. Rollins doesn't possess that. It has nothing to do with his size, either. If you tuned into RAW for the first time and saw this guy wrestling you would think he's just some generic jobber based on his entire look. He's just a generic weaselly heel like anyone else in the company. There's nothing about him that makes me want to tune into RAW. Even as recently as when Punk was WWE Champion, you knew every single Monday night you'd get an all-time great promo and a fantastic match. Considering they're both similar wrestlers as far as size, style, Indy background, etc. I really wish Rollins would go back and watch some of Punk's work when he was the top heel in the company. He was still booked as a weaselly heel, but the way he interacted with other wrestlers, fans and commentators was just electric. Punk didn't need to make fun of local sports teams or athletes for cheap heel heat because he was just such a natural at getting underneath people's skin in a way deeper than insulting Johnny Manziel or something. I'm not saying Rollins needs to be a carbon copy of CM Punk, but he really should look at some of his work to pick up the little things Punk would do to get over. I feel like Rollins is a lot like Punk in the sense that he's more of a natural heel than a face, and he needs to utilize that more in his matches and promos.
Again, this is all just my opinion, but I feel like for all the hate some other guys get, Rollins is deserving of a lot of criticism, too.
