Why was Bill DeMott chosen as the head trainer for NXT in the first place? He was never particularly good or memorable. I mean, he was in WCW and had an incredibly short in-ring stint in WWF after the Invasion and then became a trainer. I don't know, maybe it's just me but he seemed like such an odd choice. I have no idea if any of the allegations against him are true or not but I just always thought he was an odd choice as "head trainer" for developmental.
Hell, I thought he was an odd choice to be head trainer even on Tough Enough. I think everybody else they have down there makes sense. Billy Gunn worked "WWE style" for years, Albert has worked all over the world and can teach a variety of styles and it's clear what they are doing down there with the women's division has been a great success.
I just never understood the Bill DeMott deal. Did he train people in the Power Plant or something? Anybody got info on this?

1. While not the best at anything. He was solid all around in my opinion.
2. I'd rather someone who is rounded teach than someone who is spectacular in one thing and so so everywhere else.
3. Kind if a hard ass. It may not be totally ethical. But he could help weed out people who really didn't want to be there.
That's how I always saw it.

He must have been somebody's friend? I do think he was a trainer at the Power Plant as well. But it's not like a lot of the new guys who came up from NXT under his watch (without indie cred) have been all that spectacular...

I don't think anyone, not even Pat Patterson, would be up for that!

In general, in sports and other things, the best at the profession are often times not the best teachers.

Meh, just because you're not the absolute best at something doesn't mean you can't be a great teacher. Likewise, just because you're amazing at something, doesn't mean you can teach it to others. Just ask Wayne Gretzky. Guy seems like a total bag though.

It's sort of like asking why is Phil Jackson a basketball coach since he wasn't a great player. Just because you weren't great doesn't mean you can't be a great trainer/manager/coach.

Because Bill is one hell of a good trainer. I know plenty of people who trained under Bill or had some sort of training with him and they have all said hes one of the best trainers out there.

The very best and most talented don't always succeed.

He actually just conducted an interview and this question was essentially asked during it. He liked to get in the ring with the newer talent before the shows and show them different things, which was noticed by the higher ups thus he was offered the position.

He was probably like a drill sergeant, tough and did not care if the people he was training liked him. It helps find the few who really want and can be in the business.

I agree with all points, but number 3 hits the nail firmly on the head. The business of wrestling requires everything one has and then some. There needs to be someone in a position to catch new individuals early and test their limits and set expectations. If someone has the look and ability but mentally can not handle the day to day demands they shouldn't make it to the main roster where they could hurt themselves or others. With that said, imagine a Kurt Angle or a Bret Hart in Bill's old position. Not only would it cost a fortune, but even if they were great trainers, I imagine there would be individuals too overwhelmed or star-struck by those superstars.
