So I'm back in the swing of things with my AWA collection. Been on quite a roll with my figure hunting the past few months. First picked up 7-8 figures at a toy show, found different figures three weeks in a row at the flea market and this week finally found a Precious I hadn't been able to hunt down.
This week I bought someone's collection off of them. For $100 I scored 21 figures as well as the red ring and cage (which had the padlock which I hear are hard to find). There were a few harder to find figures such as the Abdullah and Scott Hall. Some figures were in rough shape but more importantly to me quite a few still had their cloth accessories which I can put on my figures that I already had which were in nicer shape.
Now onto some questions since I'm in a AWA mood.
1. The red ring I got has a mat that is pretty beat up. Was thinking of doing a ring rehab on it. Since I have the tan ring with all the logos in nice shape, was thinking of taking nice pics of the logos on that ring and creating iron on logos to create a new mat for the red ring. Hopefully can make it look like new.
2. The Precious figure I got this week has little brown spots on the legs. Not a big deal to me though, I'm not a mint collector, just happy to have the figure itself. But it occurs to me that I think I've seen others like this. Anybody else have a Precious figure with the spots on the legs?
3. Anybody ever tried any customs with the AWA figures? Some of the figures I got are pretty beat up, so was thinking of possibly some fixups of possibly Billy Robinson and Bruiser Brody. Also, any suggestions on how to remove the heads? Will the boil and pop method work on these? Something tells me biting the heads off of it like I did to my Buddy Roberts when I was little won't work these days.
4. Lastly, was on Google today and ran across these pages. Is this Dusty Rhodes figure legit? I have a few issues with it. That definitely is a Buddy Roberts head and body. To my knowledge they never used the same head on two different wrestlers. Also looking carefully at the pictures there appears to be pant blotches on the trunks to make me think that the red trunks have been panted over black. Also as crude as some of the accessories were, this jacket looks down right bad. The story isn't clicking with me either. Apparently 24 of them were made and only went to Verne Gagne and Wally Karbo. The figures were then mistakenly shipped to stores and this got out in the open. I've heard two different stories on figures. I know for a direct source that Buddy Rose literally was given hundreds of figures of himself. He gave all of them away to friends and family. Alos a couple months ago I was talking to a guy that offered to sell me a set of the Rockers (with shirts but missing one of the sunglasses...mint condition) for $300. I passed since I've seen some sell for less than $200. He said he had got the figures off a woman where she had hundreds of figures she received working at the AWA office. So back to the Dusty figure, seems strange that only two dozen went out but others from workers to wrestlers got hundreds of figures. Also, I'm not one to rag on someone's prices, but $12k? If it wasn't legit, I'd be pretty upset. If you look at this person's main page, $10k for the series 1-2 two packs plus the ring? I've seen most of those two packs sell for anywhere from $50 to $150. But $10k?
