RIP Verne.
Never seen a Verne match but i can always respect someone that added as much to the business as he did. I've dabbled in the AWA but i haven't seen much of it. Hope they add some to the network soon.

He had a long life at least, at 89, and contributed a lot to the business. Sad to know at the end of his life though, he was no longer the man he once was, which is always sad to hear for someone.

Maybe viewing some Gagne/Bockwinkel matches will be on my agenda today. Always enjoyed Verne. True legend.

There is no aspect of the modern foundation of our sport, our art, or the very careers of countless wrestlers we call our childhood heroes dating back to the 70s, that this man does not affect. Even in death, his influence spans the history of cable broadcast wrestling. He was one of THE stars of the first generation of televised wrestling alongside Lou Thesz, Gorgeous George, Atonino Rocca, Buddy Rogers, Mr. Moto, Dick The Bruiser, & Ricky Starr.
He essentially built up the first great "Outlaw Territory" outside of the National Wrestling Alliance's sanction since the organization's founding in 1948. Paving the way for every American territory to defect from the NWA since. Including what we now know as the WWE.
He led the second greatest promotion on earth, until the end of the 60s when the WWWF became a national power.
He is THE most prolific trainer of successful wrestlers in history. Training the likes of Bob Backlund, The Iron Shiek, Ricky Steamboat, Ric Flair! & Curt Hennig.
The in-ring skills of Verne Gagne are among the most complete in every aspect of a total wrestling performer, in the entire history of wrestling. From Jack Brisco to Dynamite Kid to Randy Savage to Shawn Michaels they ALL follow the archetype of a babyface, total-package wrestler that Verne Gagne pioneered.
A truly prolific, living wrestling Smithsonian has crumbled to the ground.
My heart goes out to his family. Rest In Peace, Verne. You may have only stood 5'11, but you are one the giants upon whose shoulders we stand.

This morning when I was taking my AM Dump at work, I clicked on here on my phone and actually said to myself, "Well lets see if anybody died, we're over due" Terrible to find out that Verne passed. Ill have to watch some AWA tomorrow in memory!

I was a huge AWA mark growing up. Between the old Kids Classics AWA videos you could buy at Kmart, the old 80s wrestling magazines, and of course, ESPN, i was very invested in the promotion. I got to watch Vernes matches through the older footage on videos, and loved his clashes with Nick Bockwinkle and Jumbo Tsruta. His contributions in the ring and outside of it cannot be understated. A true legend in this business and a man responsible for several aspects of its evolution over the years. RIP Mr Gagne. My thoughts are with the Gagne family.
