WrestleMania in Minneapolis? Officials plan to fight for it
Feb 25, 2015, 10:00am CST
Meet Minneapolis and Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority officials say they will work together on a bid to bring WrestleMania 33 to the new Minnesota Vikings stadium in spring 2017.
Minnesota may have an ace up its sleeve in Patrick Talty, who was hired last month as general manager of the new downtown football stadium. His last job was senior vice president of live events for WWE.
WWE awarded this year's WrestleMania 31 to Levi's Stadium near San Francisco and 2016's WrestleMania 32 to AT&T Stadium outside of Dallas. The event was in New Orleans last year.
Minneapolis was home to Verne Gagne's American Wrestling Association from 1960 to 1991 and several professional wrestlers grew up or spent time here, including Sean "X-Pac" Waltman, Brock Lesnar and Jesse Ventura, who was Minnesota's governor from 1999 to 2003.
Minneapolis has hosted WWE pay-per-view events like SummerSlam but never WrestleMania, which is the Super Bowl of professional wrestling.
Philadelphia has been vying for the event for years and intends to also fight for 2017, according to philly.com.
WWE's host city announcements in recent years have come in December or January, so Minneapolis won't likely find out until then.
The bid has not been issued, so Meet Minneapolis said it couldn't offer more information.
Meet Minneapolis also said Tuesday at its annual meeting that it hopes to secure other sporting events including a college football playoff game in 2020, the USA Cycling Fat Bike National Championships and USA Volleyball Boys' Junior National Championships.

The new downtown stadium is scheduled to be complete in time for the 2016 NFL season, and has already been selected to host the 2018 Super Bowl and the 2019 NCAA Final Four men's basketball tournament.
