Well, just wanted to get everyone's opinion on this hairy chest George the Animal Steele.....does it look legit, like the 1980's commercial? can this be a prototype?

I'm quite certain I've seen that figure in an auction, and the seller even notes that it's been altered. From what I gather, the prototypes are larger than the retail figures, so it wouldn't be exactly like the regular LJNs anyway.

Well, ive had my suspicions, the person (a lady) swears that it has been with her for years....I even asked if it looks to be painted in or colored in, and she says no....I was suspicious that the hair didn't go up into the shoulders, but im no expert on the variants, just was a bit suspcious

OK thanks for the info...but has anyone seen the WWF commercial from the 80s where the kid is playing with a Steele figure and he has the same hairy chest as the one I posted....

If it's just like all the other LJN but with different "hair" I'd suggest it's a custom. Almost every single prototype in every toy known to man, is made out of a different material or sometimes the same material but 0 paint whatsoever.

Bryan, If you get a chance check out my thread on page 2 about the hairy chest ptototype. I think I picked up a version of an authentic prototype, very similar to one shown in a sears christmas ad. I was expecting more feedback on the new comparison photos I posted from all the experienced collectors on this board; had a lot of views but no real discussions. The same figure has been discussed before, but I think that comparison pic is pretty compelling. After watching the LJN commercial again, it looks to me that the Steel figure shown could be the alternate sculpt figure shown in my thread. It's hard to tell though because of the grainy image on the commercial.
