Dawn
The sound of a thunderous slam echoes in the near empty gym. Shapiro is now laying flat on his back in the middle of the ring, while working out with his a young prospect of his mentor and trainer, Sean.
"This is horrible champ." Sean states, "We need to shake off your ring rust before the big match."
Shapiro says nothing still on laying on his back taking in the bright lights of the gym.
"You just got lucky Nikki Dean got hurt and now you're getting another chance at the National Championship." Sean continues his verbal assault. "Well let me tell you something, do you think Thornstowe and Whitner are putting in work or do you think they're horsing around and disappearing."
Shapiro finally sits up and looks over at Sean and says, "Do you think I don't know that? I'm not a child."
"You could've fooled me with the way you're getting tossed around that ring." Sean replies as he steps through the ropes and enters the ring.
"Don't worry, I'll be ready." Shapiro states. "Just a little ring rust that's all."
"I sure hope so," Sean replies, "You're getting another opportunity at the National Championship and I don't want you to blow it that's all."
"I won't, I'll be ready.I go two a days if I have to," Shapiro says.
"Good," replies Sean. "Then you can come back this afternoon for another round with Scott." He says pointing to his latest prospect.
"Not a problem Sean, I'll be here." Shapiro assures him.
"I just don't get it champ, you were just starting to get momentum and bam, you go and disappear," Sean wonders aloud.
"In all the years that you've known me do you think I would really go and do something like that if I didn't have a good reason to." Shapiro says to Sean.
Mid Day
Shapiro arrives at his apartment shutting the door behind him.
"How did it go?," Shapiro's roomate, Grady asks.
Shapiro, putting his keys down and removing his jacket, doesn't respond.
"That good huh." Grady says. "Well don't worry, I'm sure you'll do just fine."
"I'll be fine, it's like riding a bike, " Shapiro assures Grady.
"I hope for your sake your right." Grady says. "Just made lunch if you're hungry."
"Thanks but no thanks, I'm gonna go for a run in a few," Shapiro asks.
"Yeah, you could use it," Grady says laughing.
"Ha ha good one," Shapiro says sarcastically, "Do you know where my mp3 player is, I can't find it?" Shapiro asks.
"Yeah, it's on my dresser, I was using it while you were gone. Hope you don't mind." responds Grady.
"No problem, is it charged?" Shapiro asks.
"It should be and don't worry, I'm just giving you a hard time about the run. I'm just a little worried for you because Thornstowe and Whitner are no jokes."
"Thanks for your concern. I know I got my handful, but I'll be fine." Shapiro says as he puts his earbuds in his ear and heads out the door.
Afternoon
"That's the Shapiro I know, " Sean says as Shapiro locks in the Shapiro Stretch on Scott. "Alright, now you're looking good," Sean says clapping as Shapiro steps out of the ring.
"He's picking up quick," Shapiro tells Sean about his newest prospect, "he's got a great physique."
"Never mind him, Champ, you're starting coming to around again. That's good, I was getting really worried."
"I told you. You should learn to trust me more," Shapiro says with a grin.
"Yeah, yeah. You're so inconsistent, I feel like killing you sometimes," Sean says with a fatherly tone.
"You know Sean," Shapiro starts, "I'm just itching to get back in the ring and back in action."
Scott walks over, wiping the sweat off his forehead while he joins the conversation.
"What's it like to be able to go out in front of a sold out crowd living your dream, if you don't mind me asking?" Scott asks.
"It's like an addiction," replies Shapiro. "It's indescribable, the second I step out of the ring I just think to myself, 'I can't wait until my next match"
"That great huh?" Scott says with a gleam in his eye, "I can't wait until I get my chance."
"Don't worry, you've got potential. Just keep up all the hard work and listen to Sean, he knows what he's doing." Shapiro assures him.
"We're trying to come up with a good finish for Scott, any suggestions Champ?" Sean asks Shapiro.
"Given his size and strength, I would use the Powerbomb," Shapiro responds.
"I think that'll work. Listen, do you mind getting in the ring in your spare time and working with Scott," Sean asks Shapiro.
"Yeah, that'll be great I need a someone to spar with anyways. Listen guys, I gotta go, thanks for the workout today," Shapiro tells Sean and Scott as he shakes each of their hand saying their goodbyes.
"Good luck with your match," Scott hollers at Shapiro as he leaves the gym.
"How do you think he's gonna do?" Scott asks Sean.
"He'll do just fine kid, he'll do just fine." Sean assures him as he stares at the door Shapiro just exited.
