Each to their own, but I enjoyed every second of The Rock's return - on the mic and in the ring.

Oh well.
Rock is, was, and always will be a bigger star than guys like Cena and Punk.
He generates mainstream attention and brings in dollar bills.
He did fine.

I liked pretty much all of his recent run.
I don't think Cena got any 1 ups on him at all IMO.

Weak attempt to try to get fans that will never like you to like you. Way to go John Boy. Btw, Cena is supposed to be a face but he doesn't act much like on more often than not.

It's because it's not 1999 anymore, and his "popcorn farts" and "ladyparts" material was as lame as "JBL is poopy." For years, people had thought The Rock coming back would be great, and it was at first, but he was utterly embarrassed and shown up on the microphone by the current stars. He was supposed to be a great saviour from the attitude era, but he got there and he couldn't even hang with Cena or even Punk. I'll take Rock's legitimately funny and entertaining stuff over John Cena's well.... Rock was captain Catchphrase in the Attitude Era, he rarely stepped outside of his 5 or so catchphrases. I'll take one of Cena's serious promos any day of the week over present day Rock. I don't think I have ever seen Rock cut a serious promo and when you take away his vulgarity and put him up against Punk, he is coming up very short. Rock has never been a versatile promo guy so when you take the safe haven of vulgarity away, he is just another guy. Rock was never Austin on the mic and was also more reliant on the writers. Cena is a polarizing figure, his promos are meant to piss off the 16+ crowd while getting the kids to laugh.

I'm just happy he came back and respect him for that.

I'll take Rock's legitimately funny and entertaining stuff I would too, but sadly, it happened fifteen or sixteen years ago. And then he came back and got exposed by the stars of today. Got it exposed by who? Outside of Punk, who is absolutely AMAZING on the mic......Cena wasnt touching him on the mic. Cokiepuss, popcorn farts, cena's lady parts.....while not as stellar as attitude era insults.....still trumping almost everyone on the roster.

CM Punk did as well but that was to be expected. Don't get me wrong, John Cena is very hit or miss on the microphone and he missed badly on some occasions but the same can be said for The Rock.

I suppose I didn't like some of his material like the Concert, or the Hashtag stuff like #CookiePuss, or #CenasLadyParts but most of Rock's other stuff wasn't that bad IMO. I agree that Punk was above him though. His promos about Rock were pretty damn good and I really liked the "Boxing" line. But Cena always came off cheesy when he was talking about The Rock to me. I didn't like things like how he tried to say he was better than The Rock because he was the present and was there every night, while The Rock, the former WWE Superstar and Legend wasn't there every night.

Cena (easily) and Punk (easily). And those were his only two feuds. lol Cena cut one great promo in both the feuds against Rock.....when he went old school and broke out the rap. Rock one upped him later with The Rock Concert.....but Cena still nailed it in his rap. The rest was so damn cheesy. If cookiepuss, cenas lady parts, etc were so damn bad.....why were they being chanted over and over in arenas? Why, to this day, are there still some chants at Cena for these? Why would they constantly trend on twitter? Because they WERE over with the WWE crowd.

If cookiepuss, cenas lady parts, etc were so damn bad.... lol If you like that sort of thing, that's cool. Personally, if I was going to write my promos on my hand so I remembered them, I'd want better material.

Well I wouldn't put it like that...
WrestleMania XXVII: 1.06 million PPV buys. WrestleMania XXVIII: 1.2 million PPV buys. WrestleMania XXIX: 1.04 million PPV buys.

It might have been because he's been doing the same tired schtick for the better part of 2 decades and people didn't want to see him and Cena feud for 2.5 years.

Of course, The Rock's recent runs in WWE don't compare with his work during the Attitude Era. But he was able to generate a lot of interest in WWE & Wrestlemania with very limited TV time.
Peeps criticized The Rock for not being in ring shape but I also felt he had no chemistry with CM Punk. I don't know who you can blame for that. The Cena haters pretty much cheer whoever he is facing, so they went crazy for the fruity pebbles & Cenaladyparts. Rock didn't have it so easy with Punk.

Rock basically traded in his catchphrases for hashtags. And as someone else in the thread said, was it Rock or the disdain for Cena by the older crowd? If you look back, he was decimated by Punk on the mic. I'll take "Boxing with God" over #CookiePuss any day of the week.

Personally, if I was going to write my promos on my hand so I remembered them, I'd want better material. Is that supposed to be a zinger? Sadly...its not. I wouldnt write my promo on my hand, but I dont fault the dude. As far as better material....I agree. Sadly, WWE is only gonna allow so much these days and he has to work within the confines of that. Beats saying meepmoop, poopie and other childish material that Cena uses. Cena cut one great promo in both the feuds against Rock.....when he went old school and broke out the rap. Rock one upped him later with The Rock Concert.....but Cena still nailed it in his rap. The rest was so damn cheesy. If you look back, he was decimated by Punk on the mic. I'll take "Boxing with God" over #CookiePuss any day of the week. Fair point concerning Cena's hate driving a lot of cheers to Rock. HOWEVER, I dont think Rock's popularity was soley nor mostly based off that. Its The Rock. The crowds were definitely older. Because when Rock was in the building, they were drawing a lot of old school fans who hadnt been watching wrestling. They were back for The Rock. They would have booed anyone going up against Rock. Punk is a god on the mic. When it comes to putting on a wrestling promo, Punk mastered this....he did so a LONG time ago. Dont sell The Rock short. His promos are more entertainment based, laced with humor and excitement. Punk is more storyline based, analogies, stories being told, relatable topics and some humor. They cut different promos. Rock is a catchphrase guy. Punk is memorable quote guy. Take the handcuffs off Rock, and he goes toe to toe with Punk on the mic. It is true that both Punk and Rock are handcuffed with the same restrictions for the most part. However, like I said before....they both cut different type of promos. Would Punk survive the attitude era? I believe so.....but I dont think the last manifestation of Punk would have or his babyface WWE Champion would have. A heel "better than you, drug free, alcohol free, etc" would THRIVE in that era.
