I always wondered the same thing. I think it's just because in the earlier days of Wfigs, from the TTL days up to just before the Classic Superstars line, all (or most) figures were using scans to sculpt the heads. So when people signed up, they saw other people saying "scan" and "headscan" and just copied that. It's just one of those terms that people use without thinking. Finally... someone who wondered the same thing! Back when Jakks first started doing it, it was the "new thing"... Scanning an actors or athlete's head. Then it seemd like every company went on to use that method. I guess I am just too damn old and remember times before scanning was so popular and common.

I have absolutely no idea why this would bother you this much, but people call it a scan because it's easy.

Force of habit, basically. The modern characters are physically scanned for the sculpt, the deceased and classic ones are sculpted by scanning photos.

Useless thread. It doesn't matter what you call it. They're the same thing

For the same reason people refer to "EBay"as "the bay". I have no idea.

Why does everyone park in a driveway and drive on a park way? Why does a ship carry cargo, and a car carry shipments? Why are there braille dots on a drive-through ATM keypad? Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii? This!

For wrestlers who have pasted they scan photos from all angles to get the head scan. Then sculptors touch it up. But all the heads are scans from Gentle Giant Studios. Thanks - so the term headscan is correct

I've referred to it as headscan since I was a little tike.

I suppose it's just a term we all got used to. No one is taking it literally, as in "scanning of the head" although it applies to most

Because we've referred to rasslin figure heads as "head scans" since 2000 and being rasslin fans, we don't like change.

Because most people have heard "scan" so much that they don't know there's a difference? Even though it is computer assisted, like you said, deceased wrestlers don't get a 3D headscan, so I'd say sculpt is probably more accurate in those cases. I have noticed on various posts here that most people call a new headsculpt a "headscan" or "scan"... Why is that? I know that a lot of the current superstars are scanned, but I saw in a couple posts where people commented on the new E30 LOD Hawk's "headscan" and the new Andre the Giant. Am I wrong, or hadn't they passed away before that technology was ever available?! I don't really have a problem with people calling the headsculpt a scan, but I found it odd that the term would be used for everyone. Looks like a lot of talented sculptors are not getting their due credit. Let's congratulate THEM on the great likeness, not some machine and a computer.

Because we've referred to rasslin figure heads as "head scans" since 2000 and being rasslin fans, we don't like change. Yup. I'm curious about where it originated, did Jeremy or someone else involved with Jakks at the time start it when the realscan figures started? I don't think I've ever seen it ever used outside of wrestling figures, it's like it's some weird term that's only used by people who come here. I just googled "action figure" "headscan" and all the results (on the first few pages of results at least, I didn't check beyond that) were about wrestling figures so it must just be some weird thing that started on here... And yet, there must be s**tloads of other action figure lines that use scanning technology, but collectors of them haven't take on this odd "headscan" and "scan" terminology for headsculpts that we do here.

There's nothing that people won't complain about on here.
I'm sure they used scanned photos to develop the renderings..... in the cases of the deceased wrestlers.

I figure, even if it is a sculpt, that people are simply calling it a scan in the same way that people will call any cotton swab a Q-tip or any facial tissue a Kleenex.

Why does everyone park in a driveway and drive on a park way? Why does a ship carry cargo, and a car carry shipments? Why are there braille dots on a drive-through ATM keypad? Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii? Imponderables Book series by David Feldman would answer those questions

Because it is the head they sculpt that comes from a scan they use when they scan superstars faces/heads

I dont think the sculpt anymore, when you think about it mattel stopped giving cloth accessories for figures beacuse of their budget, I'd imagine having a team of sculptors to sculpt one or two dead superstars faces would bust the budget through the roof, so I'm guessing (could be wrong) that they use photo's from the WWE archives

A handy guide... Head scan: The WWE action figure process begins with Gentle Giant Studios technicians, who scan the subject - in this case, WWE Superstar Alex Riley. Digital sculptors take the raw visual captured by the scan and refine the rendering. Everything from this point on is a head sculpt: After computer editing, sculptors hit "Print" and a three-dimensional output of the molding starts to cook in an oversized printer.
