Plop.
Plop.
The rock glided across the surface of the lake just before settling down into the depths of the murky water. Nikki’s heart sank at the thought of her recent loss to Kirkbride, much like that rock she just chucked across the water. She looked up at the golden sun, quietly but beautifully sliding behind the tree line in a vibrant display of pink and red. She wanted to follow that sun down behind the trees to hide out even if for just a few hours. Nikki sat there pondering where she went wrong with the match.
“Nikki, are you still thinking about the match? ” Josh asked as he walks up behind her, taking a seat next to her enfolding her hand with his.
“Really?” She smiles, tilting her head ever so slightly to gaze into his gorgeous blue eyes. “Do you mean that or are you just saying that?”
“Yea, it was that close. But, you really need to focus now on the upcoming three way match with Shapiro and Tyger. Let that one little match go." Josh reaches his hand to Nikki’s face caressing her cheek as if to remind her of how much he truly believes in her. "You know that you can beat both of them strategy is key though.”
“ Wrestling has been the only thing on my mind as of recent. I really want to make the boys proud of their mom. After Drake’s win in his last tournament, Josh, I really have to win that belt.”
“Honey, maybe you should watch the replay.” Extending his arm to pull Nikki up off the soft grass she had made a cushy seat upon. "It'll help."
“Why? So I can replay an embarrassment.” She snarled back at him, pushing Josh’s hand away. “Just because I lost doesn’t mean I can’t pick myself up off this ground.”
“Hey don’t snap at me when I was trying to be polite. I know, you can do anything on your own. You’ve told me that before, better yet I have watched you do it. Do you honestly think I've forgotten who you are? Have you forgotten who you are?" He turns on one heel and starts to walk away. "Because this is not the Nikki I know, sulking like some miserable wench. “
Jumping to her feet, she runs towards him.
“Wait, where are you going?”
“I am going to the car.” He scuffs as he turns to face her. “You need to get some practice in, and get your head back out of the clouds. What is your problem anyway? I have been nothing but supportive of you. Is it that time of the month already?”
“Really?" Nikki lowers her eyebrows, shooting Josh that look of death. " Do you think that really has anything to do with how I feel right now? Wow, I thought you knew me better than that!”
She squawks at him, crossing her arms in disbelief of what he just said to her. He turns around and stretches his long legs in a fast stride.
“Nikki, get in the car.”
"Why?" Nikki scrunches her face. “ So you can mock me again?”
“No, so we can go to the gym. A few rounds in the ring might actually do you some good right now. You can get out some of your frustration. I know you are just mad at the situation and not me. So, come on let’s go.”
“Fine.” She gives in and lowers her head shuffling her feet towards the car. “You are right, you know. I am upset at the fact that I lost, but …” Opening the door to the car, she slides into the passenger seat and pulls down the mirror to check her makeup. “Have you ever wanted to just hide out?” She mutters. “Away from everything.”
After spending five years in a marriage that was nothing more than a façade of happiness, Nikki knew all too well what it felt like when someone lets you down. But, the expression on her young son’s face was more than she could bare when she had to tell Drake his biological father had taken off and would not return. She didn’t want to see that expression on his little face if she was to fail at National Title Belt. Finding that deep fire that drive is what she needed to do as that would ensure she would bring home that pretty gold belt around her waist and make her family and fans so proud of her. Because yes she has made it through much tougher things in life than a silly loss, and the amateur competition she will face in the ring for the National Title belt.
Josh smacks his hands together enlacing his fingers starring directly into Nikki’s eyes. “Alright Nikki, are you ready for this?”
“Yes, you know I am ready for this!” She smiles at Josh turning around she grabs the center rope, pulling herself up over the apron and slides her body into the ring.
Josh watches Nikki as she gets into the ring, thinking to himself, now this is the Nikki I know and love. She has that smile and spring in her step. Nikki doesn’t see Josh watching her and bounces up to her feet to start the warm up they always start with running the ropes.
Waiting patiently as he watches her run the ropes, Nikki comes just in reach of Josh’s long arms as he reaches out and sweeps her legs.
Thud!
Nikki falls right on her butt, turning her head quickly to look at her husband.
"Ugh, what did you do that for?”
“Hahaha,” He extends his hand out towards the rope pulling himself into the ring. “Ok, let’s get down to business. You are going to be in a three way match, and I know you don’t have much experience in that area, but strategy will be the key to winning.”
Nikki jumps back up to her feet, makes her way to the corner turn buckle climbing to the top of it. ”Hey, we need a third body in the ring. Is there anyone out there that is willing to help us out?”
“What are you doing”
She smiles as she looks down at her husband’s bewildered look on his face. “Well you told me I don’t have much experience with a three person match, right? If I want to beat Tyger and Shapiro, what better way than to get a third body in here with us?”
“Nikki, you are crazy.” Josh smiles, shaking his head. “Asking a room full of people we don’t know to come practice with us!”
A tall woman that Nikki had never seen before approaches the side of the ring. She was taller than Nikki, with dark brown hair, and gorgeous green eyes.
“Hi, I’m Courtney can I help?”
“Sure,” Nikki leaps down off the turnbuckle, ducking under the bottom rope and out of the ring. “I’m Nikki.” she extends her hand to Courtney.
“Ahem.” Josh interjects himself into the exchange of pleasantries. “What am I, chopped liver?”
“Uh huh,” Nikki giggles as she turns to Courtney. “And this piece of work moping in the corner in my husband Josh.”
“Oh hi,” Courtney turns and extends her hand to Josh. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m still in wrestling school and my brother thought it’d be a good idea to come down and work with some different people.”
“That is really awesome! Welcome to the team, it is really nice to meet the new talent. It is even better to see another female in this business. I just recently moved up to the main roster in WFWF, and I am competing for the National Title belt in a 3-way battle!”
“Really? Who are you matched up with?”
“Two guys their not really that big, Tyger and Shapiro. Tyger was on the international circuit for a while before coming to the WFWF and Shapiro like me just got called up to the main roster.”
“Nope.” Courtney shakes her head. “I haven’t heard of either of them, but I have heard of you!”
“Really?” Nikki raises her eyebrows, beaming with excitement that someone actually knew her. “I don’t know how, considering my in ring debut was streamed on the internet, and this is my first match with real media attention. Whodathunk it?”
“Ladies, ladies!” Josh chimes in. “Are we at a beauty salon, or a wrestling ring? Gosh, I’m beginning to think going to the gym with you is a bad idea.”
“Huh,” Nikki scrunches her nose as she raises an eyebrow and cackles. “Did you say something?”
“Yeah,” he says before smacking her on the bottom. “Get your cute little ass to practicing! Do you think Tyger and Shapiro are gonna go on about hair and makeup with you? Hell no, they’re gonna try to plant you through the mat to win that title. Do you want the belt, or one of those two clowns to take it home?”
“No.” Nikki replied in a low voice puckering her lower lip. “ I really want that belt.” She grasps the rope dragging herself back into the ring. “Let’s do this!” She stretches her arm out to Courtney inviting her to join them in the ring.
Nodding.” I guess you have a point! This fight won’t be the last challenge I ever face, and by far it seems to be the easiest.” Nikki sets down right in the middle of the ring. “You know I am glad that I met you.”
