“Nikki, what in the world are you doing?” Josh asks as he walks into the kitchen with a halfcocked smile and his eyebrows squinted. “ The whole house smells of marshmallows!”
“Because, I am roasting marshmallows with the boys on the stove.” Nikki said as she put the freshly roasted golden brown marshmallow on top of the graham cracker and passed it to Drake.
“Don’t forget we have Drake’s tournament on Thursday.” Josh gently reminded Nikki.
“I know, I know!” Nikki smiles and chuckles at Josh’s comment as she puts her hands on her hips and points at him. “You’re the one that needs to be reminded of things. Did you get his new uniform from his class yet? What about his school patches and did you remember the pants need to be shortened? Or, did you remember that we need to have the kids packed so they can go to dad’s before the match tomorrow? I’m going against a new guy his name is Daniel Kirkbride. ”
Hanging his head Josh shakes his head. “No, but I had a lot of media commitments.”
“Uh huh sure that is some excuse, you have to work! Next you will be saying that you need sleep too. Really what am I doing wrong?” Nikki, teasingly says back at Josh. “Sweetie you know I have gotten all of that taken care of already so stop worrying. Oh by the way dinner last night with Demento and Penny was a lot of fun we really need to do that again!”
“Yea Nikki, we should do that more often, we need a few adults to hang out with. With the kids schooling, work, media, and the kids’ activities, it will give us a little variety to our lives. Oh speaking of…. You and Penny seemed to be having fun last night!”
“Penny is absolutely amazing, she has a bad girl side but behind that she has the biggest heart of gold! You know she let me win the other day in practice right?” Nikki asks Josh as she heads back to the stove to toast another marshmallow.
“I could tell she was not going full tilt on you that day, but I wasn’t sure if it was maybe just an off day for her. But, I’m glad to see you have a friend in the company she can teach you a lot of things too.” Josh smiles at Nikki. “ What did you do?” He sees Nikki shoving a marshmallow in her mouth and somehow she missed her entire mouth and it is all over her face. “ Yum” Josh says as he starts licking her face to taste the gooey marshmallow.
“Yuck, Josh get away you are licking me!”
“Yes, I know but you taste like, like, oh yea marshmallow.” As he again licks her face.
“Eww I don’t want to see that!” Drake yells out from across the kitchen. “You’re my parents.” Nikki and Josh laugh hysterically at the unease they left their oldest son.
“Just wait one day you will have kids to and they will tell you the same thing.” Nikki sputters in between laughs.
“Kids? Really mom, I am not having any kids.”
“Yes, you will one day in about 20 years.”
“Ok fine I’ll buy a baby goat then, those are “kids”. Drake spouts off and has this honest but serious look on his little face. Nikki tried to restrain the laughter, but the comment was witty. She began to laugh. The whole family joined in on the laughter, even Hunter was laughing.
After a few minutes, Josh rings out. “Hey boys it is bed time. We have an early day tomorrow, and Drake you need to make sure you are well rested for the tournament tomorrow.”
“BUZZZZZZZ!”
The alarm clock interrupts her sweet slumber. As Nikki reaches for the snooze she hears Drake scampering across the cherry hard wood floors. She looks at the time and thinks to herself is it really already 6:00am. Well guess it is time to get up and get another day started.
Nikki knows the routine and crawls out of the bed to head for the coffee pot like she does every morning.
“Oh please Lord let this be an easy morning.”
As she heads back upstairs to get the boys ready, she peaks into Hunter’s room. There he is standing in his bed and gives a big ole grin when he sees her. She noticed that he was already dressed. “Drake are you really excited for this tournament?”
“Yes.” Drake shouts from his room and pops out of his doorway dressed and bag in hand.
“Well, thank you for helping with Hunter!” , Nikki calls out as she heads to go get herself ready.
As they head for the door Nikki checks to ensure they have everything. Drake’s gear, check; diaper bags, check; first aid kit, check; kids and husband, check. “Ok let’s go!” she says motioning for everyone to head towards the door.
Thirty Minutes Later
“Finally, we are here!” Drake screams out with delight as the school where the tournament is being held comes into view. It was your average brick school with rows and rows of windows. The lawn was meticulously mowed and signs were posted everywhere to ensure you knew where to go. As they approach the big double doors, Drake opens the doors and gleams with excitement. “I hope I get a trophy today!”
As they make their way through registration and then finally to the gymnasium, they find a spot just big enough so they would have room and a great view of the competition. They sit their stuff down and wait patiently for Drake’s rank to be called to the center stage. Josh could tell Drake was a little nervous.
“Drake, you are going to do great. Just remember if you throw that side kick to also follow up with your hands. I know you like to live and die by your kick, but remember you have to change it up if you want that trophy.” Josh advises. “And remember you have natural talent and heart. If you just go out there and remember everything you have been taught, son, you’ll do great. Your mom and I will be proud of you no matter what happens.” Josh grabs Drake up and gives him a big hug, followed by the traditional noogie. Pushing Josh away with both hands Drake screams out “DAD!”.
The announcer comes across the loud speaker “Calling all males in the blue belt division ages 10-12!” Drake jumps up with eagerly and grabs his gear. “Let’s do this!” He runs down to the ring and sits along the sideline nervously awaiting his turn. Nikki, Josh, and Hunter watch from the stands. As Nikki pulls out her camera to record his match she cannot help but overhear the guy sitting close to them yelling to his son. “Tear em up Ben!” , he shouts loudly. Nikki thinks to herself, “Wow this is a point fight, not a rough and tough knock em out tournament.” She turns her head to look at the guy. He was a big guy at least 6 foot tall and easily 300 pounds, wearing a shirt that read “Kill or be Killed”. She shakes her head and leans over to whisper to Josh. “Nothing bothers me more than unsupportive parent’s.”
Josh nods and whispers back. “Quite a coincidence. Did you hear about Daniel’s parents?”
“No.” , Nikki answers
“Apparently they disowned him or something like that, because he took up wrestling.”
“What?” Nikki gasps in disbelief. “What kind of parent does that to their child?”
Drake was called to the ring for his first fight. He was going against a kid that was bigger than any of the others in the tournament and even the center judge did a double check to ensure the kid was not in the wrong age bracket. The center judge signals for Drake and his opponent to touch gloves and motions them back to the lines of tape on the floor to start.
“Fight!” he calls out and Drake’s opponent rushes forward looking for an opening to attack Drake. You could see the fear in Drake’s eyes as he leans back and relies on his ever trusty side kick to keep this kid on the outside of his arms reach. The boy rushes in and Drake gets him with a side kick right to the stomach!
“Break!”, the judge calls out and it is a point for Drake. The judge resets the boys back to the starting line. “Fight!”, the judge calls out again. This time the boy had gotten the jump on Drake and was inside of his kick lightning fast. The kid lands a fist right to Drake’s face that rocks him like you would see in a professional boxing match. Just as the hit lands the big burly guy spouts off with “Knock em out!”
Nikki hears the jerks comment but decides that she needs to check on her son, after all she can deal with his arrogance later. As she jumps to her feet and screams. “My baby!” , as she scrambles to the floor to check on him. “Drake, Drake!” Nikki calls out to him from the sideline. “Come here. Are you ok?” She asks as he starts towards her. As she bends down to look at his face she gives him a hug and kisses him on the cheek. “Mom, I’m fine! You’re embarrassing me go away!”
Drake turns and heads back to the floor.
The judge walks over to Drake “Are you good?” “Yea.” , he nods as he walks over to the line.
The judge warns Drake’s opponent “A hit to the face is illegal. Do it again and you will be disqualified.”
The boys take their positions and this time Drake looks calm and collected like Nikki has never seen before. The judge holds his hands out and drops them loudly calling out “Fight!”. Drake moves in on his opponent and sticks him in the side again.
“Break!”
A point for Drake! Nikki yells out. “Way to go Drake!”
Drake was “in the zone” and each time the judge yelled out “Fight” he was ready and would rush his opponent ready with calculated attacks, finally changing from a sidekick, to a reverse punch, and even a head kick.
“Time!”, the judge calls out and the boys separate from their attack and return to the starting position. This time facing the judge.
The judge walks over to Drake raising his hand while calling out loudly ‘Win”. Drake smiles and returns to the sidelines for his next fight.
Drake finally makes it through to the final round. Josh and Nikki are ecstatic for Drake and cheer him on loudly from the stands.
As the two boys approach the line, Nikki can’t help but notice it was Ben. The young boy who was sitting with that arrogant jerk near her that she can only imagine ripping him to shreds in her mind. She wanted to waltz up to him and just punch him right in the face and then begin to pummel him until his face bled and he cried like the….
“Fight.”, the judge calls from the ring.
“Break, point for Ben.” The judge calls out.
“That’s my boy, tear him up! Rip his face off!” The jerk calls out to Ben.
Nikki shoots a glare at the guy like a warning for him to stop.
“Fight.”
“Break, calling a point for Drake.” the judge says.
Drake and Ben go back and forth matching each other point for point. Nikki, looks up at the score noticing it was 9 to 9 and the next point wins.
“Look for the opening Drake!” Josh and Nikki both call out at the same time to Drake.
“Knock him out!” , calls out the jerk behind them to his son Ben.
The judge signals “Fight.” The boys both know that this is for the win and carefully circle each other like sharks. Baiting each other by trying to use fake out attacks. The gym falls silent. Drake drops his hands down and Ben moves in for the reverse punch to the head. But, before his hand get reach Drake, he sidesteps and lands a kick to Ben’s side.
“Break!”
The whole building cheered, well almost all of them.
“That was a bullcrap call ref and you know it!” ,Again the jerk was running his mouth.
Drake comes running back to the stands smiling “I won, I really won!”
Nikki and Josh simultaneously hug him as Josh scoops him up for a hug.
Basking in their son’s victory with him was interrupted by the sound of someone’s voice.
“Judge you suck!” It was the man behind them yet again screaming out as his son slowly walked up the stands to sit with his dad. “What did you go and lose for ya know that isn’t what we do. We win were not losers. You’re a loser and you don’t even need to sit by me I don’t want ya to sit by me you big fat loser!” Nikki overhears the guy saying this to his own son. She is in absolute disbelief and say the young boy starting to tear up. She thought no one should ever talk to a kid that way and she had reached her boiling point and something had to be said.
Nikki approaches the stranger and with kindness tried to make him understand. “ He is just a kid and he did really good. How could you be so mean to your own son?” She asked.
He replies. “Well its none of ya business and you just need to go sit down and shut the F*** up this is my son. You belong in a kitchen and ya know sumthing go make me a sandwich.”
Nikki looked at him in disbelief. “ Look I maybe a woman, but let me tell you something. No man should ever talk to a child that way, oh wait I forgot you can’t call yourself a man because you are just a little bully living on a playground and trying to make your son feel bad for your failures in life.”
“What you are F****** stupid C*** go F*** yourself.” He mumbles back.
“Really? Your lack of words also show your ignorance. If we weren’t here with all these kids I would show you exactly how much of a wimp you really are.” Her face was red and her heart was heavy as she really wanted this guy to understand, he was not doing right by his kid. “Furthermore, you should be encouraging your child who did the best that he could and he fought with so much heart out there today. You should be proud of him.” She almost told him that his son was in tears, but knowing this arrogant jerk he would have made fun of Ben.
“Ya well ya need to learn to mind ya own buziness cause aint no one got time for losers. Ya son is a B****.”
Nikki draws back to punch him right in the face. She had wanted to so badly all day, but sadly she couldn’t do that in front of her family or the kid. After all she wanted Ben to know you don’t have to be mean to be tough. “Listen you jerk, you’re a condescending jerk who couldn’t win in his own life, and now you are making your son feel inadequate for doing an amazing job out there today. It is parent’s like you that need to be banned from reproducing. You don’t deserve to have an amazing kid like Ben and I pray he doesn’t turn out like you.” Nikki turns to smile at Ben. “You did an amazing job out there today Ben, and you should be proud of yourself.”
Ben looks back at Nikki and through the tears gives her a small smile.
Nikki turns back to the jerk. “Furthermore, I would love nothing more than to make you pay for what you have done to your own son, but some of us have respect for the children around us.” Nikki had almost completely forgotten about all the people there in the stands. “Ben, I hope that one day you will show your own son love and compassion, unlike what your father is showing you now. And for you sir, I pray that you will meet a person one day that will teach you to respect and love your son.” Nikki with all of her strength holds back yet again and turns to walk away. As she does she can hear a few parents near them laughing and saying he got what he deserved. A few others were saying deck him, deck him, teach him a lesson. But, Nikki knew she couldn’t result to violence in front of the children. But, she could imagine him lying there on the floor bloody with a few broken bones, sort of the way he was breaking Ben’s spirit.
Nikki’s mind wonders to tomorrows fight with Daniel Kirkbride. She knew that he had been the victim of unsupportive parents. Nothing made her any angrier than parent’s who could not stand by their children’s decision, especially when it was not a bad decision. But, she knew that this was not going to be a get out of the ring easy card for him either. Nikki had full intentions of showing Daniel that while life knocks you down, you shouldn’t get an easy pass to life either. What you do with life’s circumstances is what makes you a better person, or a man like what she had met at Drake’s tournament. Daniel, have you let your circumstances make you a man or a shallow husk of a man?
“Because, I am roasting marshmallows with the boys on the stove.” Nikki said as she put the freshly roasted golden brown marshmallow on top of the graham cracker and passed it to Drake.
“Don’t forget we have Drake’s tournament on Thursday.” Josh gently reminded Nikki.
