Everybody's Got A Price - Mine's $20..... Dibiase Signing

Hey all!
After a great week of Comic Con reveals..... what better way to cap it off than with our annual trip to "Wrestling Night" at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Delaware, home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks!
This is the fifth year we've went.... always had great experience in past years with Jerry Lawler, Sgt. Slaughter, Bret Hart, and Mick Foley.... this year's guest - "The Million Dollar Man" Ted Dibiase! I couldn't be more excited! The cool thing about these signings is that they are essentially free (all you really pay for is admission to the minor league baseball game).
I had a brief encounter with Dibiase and his son at the WrestleMania 29 Fan AXXESS.... we were among the last few to get into the session - and we were strictly told "No Posed Pictures." As you can see from my attempt - Dibiase did his best to adhere to that rule.... but my "meet" with Dibiase at WM29 was one of my favorites, he was so kind and personable! I was disappointed that I didn't get a good pic with him....
So, tonight was my chance.... I was determined to get a "good" photo with Dibiase this time - as well as get my JAKKS "Classic Superstar" signed, so I could add it to my wall..... I also brought a photo we had gotten from Virgil several years ago in Wildwood, New Jersey - some of you may remember my story that Virgil most likely was hitting on my wife during that encounter... it's been a long-running joke between the two of us for years!
I also brought some play money along, hoping to spice my wrestler-pics up a bit.... I'm not ready to go full-costume yet, but a few props couldn't hurt....
I was slightly taken back - as I put my "Classic Superstar" on the table in front of Ted Dibiase - he seemed kind of annoyed, & said "See.... I can't..... only pictures. For belts, figures, and stuff - it's $20."
"No problem" I replied, and immediately plunked down a twenty on the table in front of him. "It's well worth it to me!" Although, I was a bit surprised - every other year we've gone to "Wrestling Night" - the wrestlers have just signed whatever was put in front of them - no questions asked. Lawler, Slaughter, Hart, and Foley all signed Classic Superstars for me in the past and didn't say a word about it....
He also seemed a bit surprised that I wasn't arguing about it... but just as I got in close to him for my photo - I said "I should have known that 'The Million Dollar Man' would find a way to take my money!"
I jokingly (well, not really) asked him if he'd be able to sign the photo I brought that we got from Virgil... he said that was fine.
My wife's turn.... I'm glad she's such a great sport about this stuff!
So.... after we got through it.... My wife and I were chatting while watching the game.... I said I was okay with it.... she said "well, at least he's true to his character. It's all about the money!"
I have no issue with it - if they had advertised that he would be charging for non-flat items - I still would have done it anyway.... getting these Classic Superstars signed is one of my favorite things in life.... my wife just seemed to think it was a slightly dick-ish move by Dibiase.... and she doesn't usually use that word.
The fact that I can now tell the story forever that The Million Dollar Man took my twenty dollars makes the whole thing completely worthwhile for me! Not to mention the FANTASTIC photos.... and another FINE addition to my "Wall of Fame".....
So, I guess the question is - why was Dibiase so adamant about not signing my Classic Superstar without an additional fee? What is the difference between signing that and a regular 8X10? He genuinely didn't seem real pleased that I brought it... and I haven't had a superstar react this way to my figures in the past.....
